Alright, here's how it works. I'll post as I progress, but every so often, I'll stop. Why? Apart from general laziness, it's so everyone can have a chance to hop in on the action. Not only will I post my progress, but I'll also make a post with all the Pokemon that can be encountered on the route, and my thoughts on them. Keep in mind that no matter how much I play this game, I'll never be able to use EVERY Pokemon in the game, so a lot of this will be me looking up stuff on the wiki and basing my thoughts off of that. After that, I'll list a poll of my top few choices, and then MS gets a day to vote in the poll! I'll choose whichever option gets the most votes (as well as any options that are a vote or so behind the first choice). That pokemon will either then earn a spot in my team or get delegated to the box for later use.
Alright, that's all the basics for how this will work!
In case it isn't hilariously obvious, when I mention moves, a lot of these moves won't be until the starters evolve/level up higher
Spoiler: Snivy
Type:
Base Stats
HP: 45
Attack: 45
Defense: 55
Special Attack: 45
Special Defense: 55
Speed: 63
Snivy is, in my opinion, the hardest to use of the 3 starters. To start off, it's first level up move during the story is Vine Whip, the weakest of the 3 starter elemental attacks. Its attacks do consistently less damage than the other 2 starters will until it learns Leaf Blade (which is at level 28 as a Snivy). Its more oriented towards supporting the team as a whole, and when you have no team, it's difficult to support said team. Snivy is however the fastest of the trio by far, outspeeding not only the other starters, but many of the other Pokemon as well.
Aside from lack of heavy damage, Snivy's line does learn moves that can help it not die. It learns Leech Seed, both Mega and Giga Drain, and Coil (which increases Attack, Defense, and accuracy). I feel like Snivy would be saved with a decent secondary typing, because Grass is a bad typing in general. Alas, poor Snivy is stuck as only Grass the entire game.
While useable, Snivy would be the most difficult for me to play wit. It's moveset is not geared towards my play style.
Spoiler: Oshawott
Type:
Base Stats
HP: 55
Attack: 55
Defense: 55
Special Attack: 63
Special Defense: 45
Speed: 45
I think Oshawott is the best starter for the Gen V remake. And that's from someone who likes fire types a lot! Oshawott will deal good damage with either physical or special attacks, but prefers special moves over physical ones. Oshawott's move set is generally lackluster until it starts to level up/evolve. At level 17, it learns Razor Shell (75 power physical attack), and it will be his main attack until you find Surf. On top of that, Oshawott can learn revenge. It's fully evolved form can learn Megahorn if you take it to the move relearner, as well. Later in the game, Oshawott also learns Swords Dance and Hydro Pump, but you won't be seeing those until the post-game unless you want to keep your starter as a stage 1 Pokemon.
Oshawott does learn some random and generally useless moves along the way. Namely Water Sport, Fury Cutter, and Encore. It learns Focus Energy as well, which is also less than useful. On top of that, it's slower than expected. It's fully evolved form only has base 70 speed, which means you'll be going last a lot of the time. Oshawott stays as a Water type the entire game, but water is a good defensive typing (unlike grass, which is just a bad typing in general), so it's not a problem compared to Snivy.
All in all, I really like Oshawott. This line up doesn't let you down.
Spoiler: Tepig
Type:
Base Stats
HP: 65
Attack: 63
Defense: 45
Special Attack: 45
Special Defense: 45
Speed: 45
Tepig is the middle Pokemon here - it was much better in Black and White when less fire types were available. However, in Black and White 2, that issue is fixed, and several good fire types are thrown in early on. If you don't mind waiting until the second gym, you can have Pokemon that are as (or more) useful than Tepig will be of the same typing, if you don't care for the fighting type that gets tacked on when it evolves.
Tepg focuses as a physical attacker, and his moveset follows through for him. Tepig learns Ember as his elemental attack, while not his strong point, it will do more damage than Vine Whip would. He then learns Flame Charge to replace Ember right before he evolves, giving Tepig an attack he can work with. Tepig has the move Heat Crash as well after it evolves - and since this line is a pretty heavy line, you'll be dealing a decent amount of damage with it. On top of that, if you get lucky, you can see Emboar have over 200 HP before the end of the story arc, which more than makes up for his meager defenses.
Tepig learns a lot of weird moves - Smog, Rollout, and Assurance being the weirdest ones. While Rollout can be really situational, Smog is just a bad attack (base 20 power is SHIT). It learns Take Down. Which has a lot of power, if you don't mind the recoil. On top of that, Tepig's line is even slower than Oshawott's is, with a base 65 speed on its final evolution.
All in all, Tepig is slow, with more than a fair share of weird and bad moves, but will get the job done handily.
Poll going up momentarily. If you have any names you want to use (for the character, the rival, or the starter), feel free to post them in this thread. Poll will go up for 24 hours, and in the event of a tie, I'll roll a die.

Since Snivy is currently in winning by double, I'll give this thread until I beat the E4 again (sometime today, potentially soon-ish) to vote. If at that point, Snivy is still winning, I'll choose it.

Would anyone be interested in having some sort of Showdown sidegame to this, where once Ani gets 7 pokemon we could try to make full level 100 teams with the only limitation being that the only useable Pokemon would be ones that Ani has caught for one reason or another?
Never be sorry for your little time.
It's not when you get there, it's always the climb.
2 years ago, the Unova region was in chaos... Team Plasma tried changing the hearts and minds of the people for one goal - world domination. The legendary dragon Pokemon, Reshiram and Zekrom were awakened. Team Plasma would have won, were it not for a courageous young man by the name of Animo, who singlehandedly defeated Team Plasma's leaders, N and Ghetsis. Afterwards, N and Animo disappeared, never to be seen again...
We now warp to the present day - Unova has changed over the last 2 years. New towns have been added, the gym roster switched around, and everyone is thinking about their relationship with Pokemon.
We follow a young boy named
Scum
throughout is Journey to become Pokemon Master...
*ring*
*ring*
*
Scum's Mom
picks up her Xtransceiver*
"Aurea Juniper! It's been ages! What can I do for you?" Mom asked "Wow! a Pokedex... for MY CHILD? That's amazing! I'm sure he'd love to! Who's this? Bianca? Scum has to meet Bianca? Wait, she's in town ALREADY? Geez, you never change. Green hat. Got it". With that, she went to wake up Scum.
"Scum, wake up!" Luckily enough, Scum was already up and looking for something to do. He went over to his Mom. "You know
Professor Juniper
? She studies Pokemon. Well, she's an old friend of mine, and she wants you to have a Pokemon! I already told her that you wanted one, so you have to go get it now! Oh, she's also giving you a Pokedex. It keeps track of every Pokemon that you've seen in the Unova region so far! You'll be getting one of these with your Pokemon. You'll be looking for a girl named
Bianca
. She's wearing a big, green hat. And don't forget about the Xtransceiver in your bag. You do know how to open your bag, right?"
"Mom, I'm 10. I know how to open a bag!" Scum responds.
"Great! Out you go!" She says before throwing Scum out the door. "Ah, a house for myself..."
Scum doesn't go more than a few feet before he meets his best friend,
Cuddly
. Cuddly's taken up training his own Pokemon for a while now. Unfortunately, he's had no one to train against,so he's been forced to train against the wild Patrat and Purrloin in the route outside town. Cuddly can be a bit of a prick at times, but he's got a heart of gold.
"Hey Scum, got a Pokemon yet? I'm bored!" Cuddly tells Scum. "What, you're going to get one now? Well then I'm coming with you!"
"Please be careful with your Pokemon!"
Cuddly's Sister
worries about.
"Hey, Scum. There's something I need to do. And for that, I need someone I can trust. And I want that person to be you. You've got good instincts, after all!" And with that, Scum and Cuddly set out to look for Bianca.
She wasn't too far, but Aspertia City is a small town, even if it does have a Pokecenter. She was on the Outlook on the edge town, watching the scenery. Cuddly waited back, as Scum went to talk to Bianca.
"It's soo pretty! Hey, I'm looking for someone named Scum. Do you know him?" Bianca asked Scum "Oh... you're Scum! You look just like what I was told! Nice to meet you! I have a really important request for you. Would you help us complete the Pokedex? Please?"
"Sure, I was loking to get out of Aspertia City anyways!" Scum responds "It's super dull here."
"Thank you soo much!" Bianca cheers. "You're helping Professor and Juniper and I with every step you take!"
"You sound like an infomercial." Scum tells Bianca.
"Heheh, sorry... but here, look at this. Choose one of these 3 pokeballs. Each one has a different starter inside it. The one you take will determine
what Cuddly has
how hard your journey will be! Go for Snivy if you want a real challenge!"
*Animo picks Snivy without hesitation*
'Wow, Snivy! You're confident, I like that. Snivy is your perfect match! You want to give him a nickname?"
*Animo nicknames Snivy Kdowns*
"It's perfect!" Bianca gleefully responds "Here, have this Pokedex!"
*Animo gets a Pokedex*
"I'm pretty sure your mom already told you what this does, so I won't go over this again, to save you the trouble of hearing me yak on!" Bianca says. After that, Cuddly pops up from behind.
"Bianca, I want to go on a journey too! Can I have a Pokedex?"
"Well... I just so happened to have an extra Pokedex in case I lost one on my way here! Have it!"
*Bianca gives Cuddly a Pokedex*
Cuddly then immediately challenges Scum to a battle.
Spoiler: Cuddly, Match 1
Cuddly starts off this game with a level 5
Tepig
. No one has any elemental attacks yet, so this goes just fine.
"Cool, I can count on you! Get stronger!" Cuddly says before running off.
What do you think? I feel like this needs a bit of a makeover - it doesn't look that nice, but I like the dialog. I'm going to update the first few posts, and then I'll get into the Pokemon on the next few routes, and throw up a poll.
Everything from here until I exit Aspertia is basic "How do Pokecenter?" stuff, so I felt no need to add it in.

In my opinion, Patrat is the better of the 2 Pokemon currently available in Route 19. It's the only one that gets STAB from it's current attack, but it's got a really interesting movepool. Filled with Bide, Detect, Sand Attack, Hypnosis, and the worth. It's not meant to be an attacker, it's meant to be ANOTHER support Pokemon. It evolves at level 20, so you'll see it evolve relatively quickly once you get it.
That said, I have issues with Patrat - it's slow and it dies quickly. Bide is rendered useless against most everything and Hypnosis has low accuracy. Sand Attack is nice, and Detect is always useful. Unfortunately, you don't get Retaliate until late in the game in Black 2, so it's even harder to use.
It does however learn Baton Pass and Work Up (which we'll be getting shortly anyways), so that might be useful.
Spoiler: Purrloin - Routes 19 & 20
Type:
Ability: Limber or Unburden
Levels 2 - 4
Base Stats
HP: 41
Attack: 50
Defense: 37
Special Attack: 50
Special Defense: 37
Speed: 66
It's really hard to raise a Purrloin. It starts off with no dark moves until level 15 - Pursuit (which you won't catch a pokemon swapping out in the main game that often, so it's fairly useless). It doesn't even learn Bite or Crunch. Once it learns Bite however, it becomes so much easier to use. I
It's very fast - currently faster than Kdowns is, but Kdowns does outspeed Purrloin eventually. It learns Fake Out early, which is helpful in most cases. It's level up pool is very shallow, however. Most everything is a Dark or Normal move, with the exception of Sand Attack. You're going to have to use TMs (which are infinite use in Gen V) for Purrloin if you plan on using it for long.
Spoiler: Sunkern - Route 20
Type:
Ability: Chlorophyll or Solar Power
Levels 2 - 4
Base Stats
HP: 30
Attack: 30
Defense: 30
Special Attack: 30
Special Defense: 30
Speed: 30
Unless I'm mistaken, Sunkern is a waste of a Pokemon. Introduced as a baby Pokemon in Gen II, it's held the title for WORST Base Stat Total since. It's move pool isn't that great either. Its movepool is pretty much all grass type moves (not gaining another attack until Level 10 - Mega Drain). It's best attack move is either SolarBeam, Double Edge, or Mega Drain, depending on a few factors - Double Edge doesn't get STAB, SolarBeam takes 2 turns to charge, and Mega Drain is a lot weaker than both, but you get it 12 levels earlier.
On top of that, Sunkern evolves via STONE. So you have to keep it as a Sunkern until level 37 if you want Double Edge, and by that time, it won't be doing any damage at all to anything. It's too busy being OHKO'd.
This isn't making the poll. I don't feel like torturing myself.
Spoiler: Pidove - Route 20 & Floccesy Ranch
Type:
Ability: Big Pecks or Super Luck
Levels 2 - 4
Base Stats
HP: 50
Attack: 55
Defense: 50
Special Attack: 36
Special Defense: 30
Speed: 43
Pidove is the Normal/Flying type bird for the Gen V games. Honestly, Staraptor is the only one of these that are worthwhile for the most part. When it evolves, it learns moves like Roost, Detect, Taunt, and Tailwind. These things can be a bitch to take down because of that, so Super Luck is generally the preferred ability.
In terms of attacks, it learns things like Air Cutter, Air Slash, and Razor Wind. In fact, you won't be seeing a physical attack for this thing aside from Quick Attack for most of the game! By the time this thing would learn Facade, the game's pretty much over. It learns Sky Attack in the post-game also.
Pidove is in desperate need of a movepool makeover. I'll likely pick one up for purposes of Fly, the poll would be if I end up using it in my team.
Spoiler: Sewaddle - Route 20
Type:
Ability: Swarm or Chlorophyll
Levels 2 - 4
Base Stats
HP: 45
Attack: 53
Defense: 70
Special Attack: 40
Special Defense: 60
Speed: 42
Being honest here, I love Sewaddle's line. If you raise it well, you can have a stage 3 Pokemon at level 21. In fact, I'd recommend it, as Sewaddle and it's stage 2, Swadloon, are pretty useless. Sewaddle evolves into Swadloon at 20, and Leavanny with full happiness (In Black and White, you picked up Sewaddle at level 14 or so). Sewaddle's movepools consists of Big Bite, Razor Leaf, Struggle Bug, Bug Buzz, and Flail. It learns Protect when it levels up into a Swadlono (and nothing else).
Leavanny, however, learns X-Scissor and Leaf Blade before level 40 (so you'll be late midgame by the point, as you don't finish the game until around level levels 55 - 60). Leavanny also learns my favourite Status move, Swords Dance. It has a hard time pulling it off however, as it has 6 weaknesses, being both bug and grass type. I've used this thing in many games and it pulls through for me every time.
All in all, I'd be really happy with Leavanny, but I'm worried about having 2 grass types.
Spoiler: Psyduck - Floccesy Ranch
Type:
Ability: Swarm or Chlorophyll
Level 5
Base Stats
HP: 50
Attack: 52
Defense: 48
Special Attack: 65
Special Defense: 50
Speed: 55
We're going to need Surf at one point or another during the game, and Psyduck is the first Water type you meet in the game. Psyduck's movepool is a good mix of Normal, Water, and Psychic type moves. By the time this guy levels up (at level 33), he'll have lost his relevance. Most other pokemon would have evolved by that point, and Psyduck will be left in the dust. In terms of attacks it learns before it evolves (aka a large majority of them), most of them are special based (Water Gun, Confusion, Water Pulse), but there are some physical moves (Zen Headbutt, Aqua Tail).
When Psyduck evolves, it becomes relevant again - kind of. I feel like Psyduck is a worse water type than Oshawott is, honestly. That said, I don't have Oshawott.
Spoiler: Mareep - Floccesy Ranch
Type:
Ability: Static
Level 5
Base Stats
HP: 55
Attack: 40
Defense: 40
Special Attack: 65
Special Defense: 45
Speed: 35
Electric type pokemon are generally known for being super fast - Mareep is not one of those. It's final evolution, Ampharos, has 55 base speed. Static is always a nice ability to have, as well. Mareep will only gain one more attack as a Mareep - Thundershock, a special based electric type attack. Mareep learns Cotton spore, which is nice, but Static kind of does that already and has the bonus of paralyzing the pokemon. It also learns Electro Ball as a Flaaffy, which confuses me - I believe Mareep is also a support oriented pokemon, but it suddenly gains a load of attacks once it learns Power Gem (wtf?).
On top of that, Mareep is completely outclassed by an upcoming Electric Type (which wil be in my next one of these). I see no need to get Mareep, honestly.
Spoiler: Azurill - Floccesy Ranch
Type:
Ability: Thick Fat or Huge Power
Level 5
Base Stats
HP: 50
Attack: 20
Defense: 40
Special Attack: 20
Special Defense: 40
Speed: 20
If I'm picking up an Azurill, I'm picking up as many of these as I need to to get one with Huge Power. Not that it will help as an Azurill, because it learns mainly special based attacks! It learns Slam at level 20, and Bounce at level 23, which are it's only physical attacks as an Azurill. Once it evolves via friendship, it learns attacks like Aqua Tail and Double Edge, which take advantage of Huge Power as an ability. It the evolves into Azumarill at level 18 (but I'll likely be holding off until 20 to evolve Azurill in Marill).
As a quick note, Azurill loses the Normal Type and gains water type when it evolves. Also, there's a 50% chance that male Azurills become female Marills.
Once you get Azumarill, you have a Pokemon that's a pretty good tank and can deal out good damage as well, if it has Huge Power. Thick Fat is essentially useless as an ability.
Spoiler: Riolu - Floccesy Ranch
Type:
Ability: Steadfast or Inner Focus
Level 5
Base Stats
HP: 40
Attack: 70
Defense: 40
Special Attack: 35
Special Defense: 40
Speed: 60
OK, let me give you a bit of a secret - the first gym is normal type. Now you're thinking great, fighting type would give me an advantage! Well, not really. I'd have to grind it to level 15 to get Force Palm, and I'm not going to do that. Riolu is potentially the only baby Pokemon that can actually do well. Force Palm is the last damage dealing attacking is learns as Riolu (aside from Reversal (and Final Gambit, if you want a level 55 Riolu)).
Once it evolves into Lucario via friendship, shit get cray cray. Lucario gains the ever useful steel typing, removing flying and psychic as it's weaknesses, and making them fighting, ground, and fire types instead. Lucario learns Ice Punch (which is SUPER USEFUL in this game), and ThunderPunch (not as useful, but still useful). Lucario works as a physical, special, or mixed attacker. It learns it's signature move, Aura Sphere, at level 51 (I replaced Force Palm here).
I really like this line as well, so I'd like to pick this one up also.
Spoiler: Lillipup - Floccesy Ranch
Type:
Ability: Vital Spirit or Pickup
Level 5
Base Stats
HP: 45
Attack: 60
Defense: 45
Special Attack: 25
Special Defense: 45
Speed: 55
Lillipup is another really good Pokemon. In Black 2, it was available on route 1, so you could pick it up RIGHT AWAY and do super well with it's evolution line. Lillipup learns Take Down at level 15 and just owns everything. It learns Crunch at level 22 and Retaliate at level 29 as well. It learns Last Resort and Giga Impact, if you're into those moves.
Lillipup's evolution line, Herdier and Stoutland, are mustache-tacular, but learn much the same moves.
All in all, Lillipup's a really unsurprising line, but a good one. I'd be up for having this one my team.
OK, there are a metric ton on Pokemon on these few routes. As such, I'm giving you 2 votes - and I'l pick up the two pokemon with the most votes.
