The Number Game

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Fri Sep 23, 2016 7:36 am

Post by Thurhame »

How it works: The first poster generates four random digits (0-9) and a random target value (10-100). Then people try to use the digits,
in their original order
, to reach the target value. For example, if the digits are "1" "2" "3" "4" and the target value is "24", then "(1+2+3)*4=24" is an answer. The first person to solve it will then post the next set of random numbers.

Allowed Operations
  • multi-digit numbers; for example if "2" and "5" are next to each other you can combine them for "25"
  • decimals; for example you can use "3" as either ".3" or ".3 repeating" (i.e. ".333333333...")
  • basic operations; + - * /
  • exponents; ^
  • square roots; for example "9" -> "sqrt(9)" = 3
  • other roots; for example "3" "8" -> "3rd root (8)" = 2

So the first set of numbers is "
2
", "
9
", "
7
", "
6
"; and the target number is "
40
".

You need to use them in order.

So you could use 3^4, but not 4^3.

I was thinking a =round() might have been needed somewhere.

Ouch. Maybe I shouldn't have included 0 as a digit.
Does anyone else see a solution to that one?

I think the closest I can get is 90.6 if I'm allowed to play with decimal points in that fashion. (otherwise 96 straight or 92 when moving numbers around)

no, and I tried some pretty desperate stuff :/
I definitely agree with removing 0. Most of the time it's just a waste.

how did you play with decimal points to get 90.6?
