MS MtG Modern Super League

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Oct 02, 2016 10:34 am

Post by hasdgfas »

This thread is for initial organization of the MS Modern Super League.

This will be a 10-player, round-robin tournament with 3 trimesters. In each trimester, players will be able to choose a separate deck, and they will have 3 opponents, who can be played in any order. However, players can play the same deck each trimester if they wish. Once all 9 rounds are finished, we will cut to a top 4 by seed. In the top 4 playoffs, players will select 3 decks and play best 3 out of 5 matches in each round, with the ability to change decks between the semifinals and the finals. Those decks will be labeled A, B, and C, and two or even all three of them could be the same if the player wishes. A, B, and C must be played in order for the first 3 matches. For matches 4 and 5, players may choose any of their 3 decks, and may even select the same deck for match 4 and match 5.

We will be using OCTGN as a platform for this tournament. Instructions for installing MTG and images are located here.

OCTGN was selected after investigation into all the platform options. Xmage and Cockatrice were downloaded, and other research was done into videos displaying those programs. The other options had some issues that prevented them from being the cleanest platform to use. Rules enforcement, while it can be nice, can also lead to clunkier gameplay and the inability to fix things. Additionally, the chance of something being programmed incorrectly means that we're not comfortable with a platform with rules enforcement. OCTGN's play space does everything it needs to, and in our extensive use, we haven't found issues that can't be solved pretty cleanly.

We have the option to make the tournament more of a "show" if we like, due to spectator capability. I can set up a Discord server, which we can use for real-time communication/commentary on matches by those not playing. There are some implications that this would have for the tournament. One is that decklists per trimester would have to be open, so that people who watch matches don't have an advantage over those who don't/can't. To go into a bit more detail of how this would work, once trimester schedules are posted, all decklists would be submitted to a neutral party, and then all be posted in thread at the same time.

When signing up, please indicate if you would like to use Discord.

If there are any questions, please ask them in-thread:

Decks per trimester are locked before decklists for that trimester are made public. Not for the full tourney.

I'd be interested, but I haven't really played magic at all since RtR, so I'd have to do research. So basically, I'm in, but only if you really need more players. Otherwise, I'm happy to just watch the vods.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

It's actually a good time to get back in. New set just came out, so there's a certain amount of potential creativity in terms of deckbuilding. Also, thanks to a bunch of bannings and unbannings over the past year, the format as it stands now really only dates back to this May. So there's a lot less to catch up on than you'd expect.

Sudo also inadvertently brought up the last possible idea here -- if we're using Discord, it should be possible to record games with commentary and then put them up somewhere later for viewing. I have no idea how to do this, and I don't think Cow has any experience in this either, so if anyone is interested in this and has advice...

Sorry about the double post, but to be clearer, this depends on Discord/no Discord.

If Discord, then because people are spectating, here's how it would work. First, the "schedule" gets released in thread (what three players you're going up against in the next trimester). Then we set a deadline for deck submission to a neutral party. You can change as you want up to the deadline, but once that's reached, the deckkeeper posts all the decks in thread. Then we play those games in any order. Repeat for each trimester. It's done this way so everyone's on the same level, and nobody gets an advantage or disadvantage based on being able to show up one time to watch.

If no Discord, then people aren't spectating and decklists can stay secret. We'd still lock decklists in for each trimester, but decklists could stay secret until the trimester's over. No matter which option we choose, decklists will go public before you need to figure out decks for the next trimester, so you get progressively more information about what people might play as the tournament goes on.

If anything illustrates the difference between Panzer and I when it comes to Magic or Hearthstone, it's the fact that his first thought was "Lightning Bolt to the dome" and mine was "I hope Ensnaring Bridge is still good."

Well like, my real first thought was "do I still understand dredge as a mechanic?". My second thought was, "do I remember the phases in a magic turn?" The third thought was "I really hope lightning bolt to the face works".

Klaxam, doesn't maestro play?

DDD is still around.

There seem to also be a few people floating around the mtg thread that may/may not be interested.
