Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue May 28, 2013 11:50 pm

Post by Vel-Rahn Koon »

You awaken to the hustle and bustle of your home town’s daily activity. Little did you know that the peaceful quiet of your normal, everyday life would come crashing down today. It seems that one of your fellow citizens has angered the Mob, and has paid for it with his life! What are you going to do? Why, you’re going to get your peaceful, little town back, that’s what…

Your job, fair citizens of the town’s Ruling Council, is to discover who among you belong to the Mafia and summarily lynch them. Two of your fellow Council members are working for the Mafia - find them before they take over the Council and the town!

Game Rules

The Golden Rule

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun! Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game. Playing to win does not preclude being considerate of each other!

There is a ZERO tolerance policy for personal attacks in this game. I will remove you from the game (possibly without warning) if you get too personal.

General Rules/Game Etiquette
  1. In order for all players to play at least one game day this game will start with a Day phase.
  2. Communication outside the thread (if your role specifically allows it) is allowed until the game begins.
  3. You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind. Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.
  4. Please remember that you made a commitment to participate when you signed up to play. If you cannot fulfill this commitment, please contact the Mod and request a replacement instead of just disappearing!
  5. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it.
If someone contacts you outside the game you should report it to the game Mod IMMEDIATELY.
Activity/Prods/Replacements
  1. You should aim for one post every 48 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.
  2. Prods of missing players will be issued upon request or after 2 real-life days of no activity.
  3. A prodded player has 48 hours to respond to the prod, after which time a replacement search will begin. The prodded player may re-enter the game so long as no replacement has been found.
  4. A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to possible replacement without further notice (player-requested prods do not count towards this total).
  5. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please PM the Mod so that you don’t get replaced!
Deadlines
  1. All Newbie games have strict 2-week deadlines.

  2. Extensions are given only in extreme circumstances.
  3. Nights will have a standard deadline of 72 hours.
  4. If you have a role with a Night action your choices are due to me by the posted deadline. If I do not receive your choice via PM by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions.
  5. Deadlines may be shortened if activity is too low, or if all Night choices have been received early.
Player Actions/Voting/Player Death
  1. A simple majority of all living players must agree on one person (via voting) for a Lynch to occur (simple majority = ½ # of living players +1, rounded down). If no one has a simple majority of votes at deadline a No Lynch will occur.
  2. Votes should be bolded or they may not be counted (e.g.
    Vote: Player
    ).
  3. Vote revocations should be bolded or they may not be counted (e.g.
    Unvote: Player
    or
    Unvote
). Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
  4. You may
    Vote: No Lynch
    - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a Lynch.
  5. Votes/Unvotes should be placed on a line all by themselves to make them easier for everyone to see.
  6. Votes/Unvotes that reasonably follow the guidelines specified above, and are unambiguous with respect to player nicknames/abbreviations, will count. Attempting to fake a vote will result in a Modkill.
  7. Once a player has reached a simple majority of votes no further unvoting will change their fate.
  8. When a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players may continue to post.
  9. If you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post except for a brief “Bah!”-type post that contains NO game related information.
  10. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage).
  11. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mod know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.
Miscellaneous
  1. Red
    or
    Purple
text is reserved for the Mod.
  2. No invisible/small/encrypted text is allowed.

  3. Vote counts will be posted once per page or once per day, whichever is less.
  4. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM the Mod privately. Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
  5. The Mod may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
  6. Please bold all requests to the Mod so that they don’t get missed.

  7. Rules violations will be dealt with according to their severity (up to and including a Modkill) as the Mod sees fit.
  8. Modkills may be accompanied by a change to day/night. The offender’s role will be changed to Neutral Survivor, which guarantees a loss.
  9. Any situation not explicitly covered above is subject to Mod discretion and will be handled as the Mod sees fit on a case-by-case basis.

All Newbie games are using the Matrix 6 setup, where the List Moderator randomly assigns either one row or one column from the table below. The remaining six roles will be filled in by mafia goons and vanilla townies appropriately, to create a 2-mafia and 7-town setup. For example Row 1 (1 jailkeeper, 1 vanilla townie, 1 mafia goon) would add an additional 5 vanilla townies and 1 mafia goon, for a total setup of 1 jailkeeper, 6 vanilla townies, and 2 mafia goons. The Game Moderator will assign players to the roles.

Matrix6 (as designed by Cogito Ergo Sum):

ABC
1Town JailkeeperVanilla TownieMafia Goon
2Mafia RoleblockerTown CopTown Doctor
3Town 1-shot
Bulletproof
Mafia GoonTown Tracker

These are the Role PMs that have potentially been sent to the players:

Town-Aligned players:

You are a normal townsperson, trying to make a living and survive this insanity.
  • You have no abilities at Night other than getting a good night's rest.
  • Although you do not have any special abilities, your voice and vote are powerful weapons in their own right. Use them to your best advantage!
  • At no time may you privately communicate with any other player.
  • You win when all the Mafia players are gone, whether you survive to the end or not.

You are a member of the local law enforcement, and can tell the good guys from the bad.
  • Each NIGHT, you may send the moderator a PM with your choice of player that you want to investigate before the Night deadline.
  • The Moderator will inform you as to that person’s guilt or innocence.
  • If you are blocked by a Mafia Roleblocker you will receive a PM stating “No Result”.
  • At no time may you privately communicate with any other player.
  • In a Newbie game, you will always get a correct result (no sanity issues).
  • You win when all the Mafia players are gone, whether you survive to the end or not.

You are a physician, and can use your medical training to protect people from harm.
  • Each NIGHT, you may send the moderator a PM with your choice of player that you want to protect before the Night deadline.
  • If someone attempts to kill that player during the Night, they will be spared.
  • You will not be informed as to whether your protection was successful or not.
  • You may not protect yourself.
  • At no time may you privately communicate with any other player.
  • In a Newbie game, your protection target will always live through the night.
  • You win when all the Mafia players are gone, whether you survive to the end or not.

You are a prison guard, and it’s your job to ensure the undesirables are kept in their place.
  • Each NIGHT, you may send the moderator a PM with your choice of player that you want to send to jail before the Night deadline.
  • If the jailed player attempts to use a Night action, their action will not resolve.
  • If the jailed player is the target of a Kill that action will not resolve. Any other actions will resolve.
  • Neither you nor your target will be made aware of whether your own action was successful.
  • You may not put yourself in jail.
  • At no time may you privately communicate with any other player.
  • You win when all the Mafia players are gone, whether you survive to the end or not.

You are scared of the local Mafia presence, and have taken to protecting yourself while you sleep.
  • You have no ACTIVE abilities at Night other than getting a good night's rest.
  • If you are targeted by the Mafia during the Night cycle, your bulletproof vest will save you.
    • This ability is PASSIVE, and works without any input from you, the player.
    • This protection will only protect you from the first shot.
    • If you are targeted on any subsequent night, the kill will go through as normal, and you will be out of the game.
    • You will not be informed if the Mafia target you.
  • Although you do not have any active special abilities, your voice and vote are powerful weapons in their own right. Use them to your best advantage!
  • At no time may you privately communicate with any other player.
  • You win when all the Mafia players are gone, whether you survive to the end or not.

You are an amateur gumshoe, and have decided to see if you can figure out who amongst you is in league with the Mafia.
  • Each NIGHT, you may send the Moderator a PM with the name of the player whom you want to follow.
  • If that player performs a Night action, you will be told whom they took action against.
  • You will not be told what action was performed!
  • If you Track someone who has no active Night ability, you will receive a PM stating “No Result”.
  • At no time may you privately communicate with any other player.
  • You win when all the Mafia players are gone, whether you survive to the end or not.
Mafia-Aligned players:

(a Mafia Roleblocker) and

(a Mafia Goon) are part of the local Mafia crime family. Since your plot to quietly overtake the town has failed, you will attempt take it by force by eliminating the others until you outnumber the populace.
  • During the day, try to blend in with the normal Townies and attempt to get someone lynched.
  • During the NIGHT cycle ONLY, you may talk with your fellow Mafia (via QuickTopic, linked below) and choose another player in the town to kill that night.
  • One of you must send the moderator a PM with your choice of who to kill
and who is performing the kill
    before the Night deadline.
  • The Mafia Roleblocker has the ability to block the Night action of one Town player each night (Bulletproof Townies cannot be blocked).
  • One of you must send the moderator a PM with your choice of player that you want to investigate (usually along with the kill) before the Night deadline.
  • If the Mafia Roleblocker is blocked by a Town Jailkeeper then the Roleblocker will receive a PM stating “No Result”.
  • You may communicate privately via QuickTopic with your fellow Mafia up until the game thread is opened (this is called Night 0). Once the game begins, all outside communication must cease until the night cycle.
  • Please do not communicate with each other outside of the QT.
  • You win when the number of Mafia equals or exceeds the number of remaining Town players, whether you survive to the end or not.

Greetings, my name is Master Mew and I'm one of this game's three "Semi-Experienced" players. This basically means I've completed multiple games on MafiaScum and am here, alongside the IC and other SEs, to help introduce you to the way the game is played here on MafiaScum.

I joined MafiaScum back in October of last year and also play on EpicMafia and moderate the Mafia subforum of Bulbagarden, where I've played Mafia for a couple of years now. I answer to "Master Mew," "Mew," "MM," or "Matt," but feel free to call me whatever you want. ;-)

Now, ferretlover has placed the first vote, jumpstarting the game (good), but also cautioned the Mafia not to follow millertime's
excellent
advice about claiming Scum (bad)...

I think I'll drop my vote here for now:

Vote: ferretlover

Any reason you're concerned about the Scum giving themselves away?
I just don't want the game to be too easy, it seemed unsporting!
^Actual quotation from the future.

Fun Fact:
NachoMamma and I have played together in every game I've played in
The Road to Rome.

AFK for a while

No need to post an AFK, as we don't expect players to sit by their computers 24/7. If you are going on vacation, the term on site is V/LA (Vacation/Leave of Absence). V/LA cannot be longer than 5 days (in my games) without the need to replace out, since the other players will have a hard time getting a read on you if you're gone for too long.

Hi guys!

I have some experience with real life mafia so I'm only a newbie regarding internet bznz. I'm also going to be extremely careful with the advice this SE and IC players give, since they could also be mafia.

I'm going to
Vote: Mew
just for the fact that he asked a question that does not look for a valid answer, is a question designed to make ferretlover look bad.

Fun fact: Activity in this game sucks. Bad. 8 posts in a 48-hour period from only 4 of 8 active players is atrocious.

In other news, darkwolf replaces Knixsilva, who never picked up their role PM.

So you're more concerned with the "Experience" rather than actually finding scum?
In post 18, AgentPooky wrote: We don't have enough info to go on and we don't want to lynch a townsman!
So then how do you presume that we get the game moving forward then? Votings a great way to progress the game and actually forces scum to have to make decisions, abstaining from voting early on accomplishes nothing - We will be lynching D1 and your lack of a vote is a refusal to utilize all of your resources to hunt scum and is therefore anti-town.

Now with that out of the way, hello again to Nacho.

And now for a nicely placed first vote;

It's a noble sentiment, but ultimately advising the Scum on how to avoid being caught too quickly runs counter to the Town's win condition - which is to say that while I understand where you are coming from, I hope you can understand why I can't let it go without question.

Yes, my question was designed to make ferretlover look bad - because what ferretlover did looked bad.

This is a decent vote, though - I respect it. It is a little contrarian for my taste, though.

The game is fair - if Scum out themselves on Day 1 that's their fault. The rules are plainly stated at the top of the thread, it is no one's fault but their own if they disregard them. It is the job of the Town to outwit the Scum and persuade them to slip and reveal themselves; millertime's gambit was this principle in it's simplest, most boiled down and blatant form and while it's likelihood of success was low, let's not pretend it was something other than what it was. He wasn't cheating.

Your win condition should inform every action you take in the game - it is natural to be questioned for any action which appears to undermine the Town's win condition, and should be expected.
