"Certainly," you think, "I'm just seeing things; there's no way anyone would mark the deck, right?"
Thirty minutes pass, with nothing eventful happening. Then, Nosferatu makes a large raise preflop, indicating that he felt rather confident he would win based solely on his two initial cards. Everyone sans one person folds.
The flop is dealt; an ace and a king are present, as well as a seven, two of which are diamonds. Certainly, Nosferatu would be in good position if he had so much as an ace; even more so the case if he had an ace and a king. The only potential threat were the two diamonds, which, if paired with two more diamonds, would form a
flush
- five cards of the same suit, which is one of the highest hands one would expect to reasonably make in most Hold'em games.
"I'm aaaalllllllll iiiiinnnnnnnnnn!!1!", Nosferatu says in a half-drunk voice that was half-intimidating, half-humorous, and he slams his entire stack of chips directly in the center of the table. His opponent immediately calls. What could be going on here?
The remaining two cards are dealt, and the hands are flipped face-up: Nosferatu with
two pair
, aces and kings, and his opponent, with ... a
full house
?! Sure enough, the two additional cards after the flop gave Nosferatu's rival a
full house
, consisting of three sevens and two fours. Presently, someone across the table calls out in a voice even more half-drunk than Nosferatu's was.
"HEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYY ... Who the hell would call an all-in bet on the flop with just a pair of sevens?!?!"
His voice trails off into the distance. Presently, Nosferatu is removed from the playing room, and you start to be very wary of your opponents.
