Voting and Deadlines:

1. Votes must be bolded or in vote tags or else they will not be counted. Unvotes are not required to change your vote, but they are helpful. Putting your vote on its own line or at the beginning of one is also not required, but helpful.

2. I don't mind if you use nicknames/abbreviations when you vote someone. But if I have no idea who you're voting for, then the vote won't be counted.

3. Lynches require a majority of votes: (number of living players/2) +1, rounded down.

4. If there's no majority at deadline, there's no lynch.

5. When the hammer vote is cast, all players, including the lynched may talk freely until the final vote count and lynched player's cardflip have been posted. I will lock the game thread at that time.

6. When you are hammered, on the following day, you may make one "bah" post with no game-relevant information. Nothing more.

7. Deadlines are set at two weeks; extensions are not likely to be given, except in certain circumstances.

Prods and Replacements:

1. Prods will be given if you do not post in

48 hours

. Weekends count as a single full day in determining if a prod is due.

2. You will be replaced if you either do not respond to a prod, or need to be prodded more than 3 times total. You may request for a player to be prodded at any time, but the less you request, the happier your mod is. Prods requested when a player has been absent for less than 48 hours do not count for replacement purposes.

3. If you're V/LA, make sure I know. If you are V/LA for more than a week, I'd suggest requesting replacement, but that's not required. If a lengthy V/LA is adversely affecting the game (e.g., if you are not able to post minimally during that time), then your mod may replace you without penalty.

The first thing you notice about Florida is probably the temperature. Our latitude is 24° 30' N to 31° N. Other hot places in this latitude include the Sahara, Saudi Arabia, Mexico (read: Sonora Desert), and India. In the summers, we routinely reach sustained highs of 99 F (37.2 C). This weather lasts until mid-November and picks back up in March.

The second thing you notice about Florida, of course, is the humidity. The humidity is what's responsible for making people sweatier, days feel hotter, and just general feelings of walking through soup. It's currently pretty dry - the predicted high humidity for today is 77%. In the summer, we regularly reach 100% humidity!

Due to the reduction in temperaures, mosquitoes are becoming less of a problem. During the summer months, however, they're pretty much everywhere. There are 80 species of mosquito that are known to occur in Florida, and they are all bloodsucking creatures of horror that haunt the night and the shade and any place that might keep you from sweating to death. A few of these species can also carry and transmit viruses and parasites, such as heartworm (for your pets) or West Nile virus, malaria, or yellow fever (for you).

First up: mangroves. They grow all over the (tropical areas of the) world, but the continental US population of mangroves is mostly in Florida, with a very few in LA and TX. We have three varieties: red, white, and black. The black mangrove is the most common; it deals with its brackish-water habitat with 'snorkel roots' and by sweating. The red mangrove (above) is next; it uses 'walking roots' to combat salt intake, which are a habitat for many types of marine life. Finally, there are the white mangroves; they have fleshier leaves and grow further back from the waterline than the other two.

Spoiler: Oysters

Next: oysters. They've been dying off due to pollution and overconsumption, but are making a comeback as part of a project to prevent erosion in the Indian River Lagoon. Oysters all begin life as males. Sprat are attracted to the scent of other oysters, near whom they will anchor themselves as they grow to adulthood. Their shells are very sharp and can cause injury to the unwary tourist.

Conchs and whelks come in a number of different varieties. The one I see most often is the Crown Conch (above). Others include the horse conch (an interesting shade of orange) and the lightning whelk (the sea snail equivalent of a lefty).
Conch can get quite large, and in many Caribbean countries are a common dish. They are 100% delicious.

Hermit crabs are populous here in Florida. We have 3 common varieties: the Thinstripe (extremely common), Long-Armed, and Giant (above). As they grow, they have to leave their shells to find newer and bigger ones, leaving them temporarily vulnerable. Hermit crabs out of the shell are pretty gross to look at.

Stingrays show up every once in a while in various waters; the Atlantic Stingray (above) in particular is capable of living in fresh water as opposed to the salt or brackish water most other stingrays inhabit. They're pretty peaceful creatures, and by and large are far more likely to flee than fight.

Many baby horseshoe crabs grow up in the warmer waters of Florida. Tiny and nearly transparent at first, they swim on their backs and burrow into the seafloor to defend themselves until, several years later, they are grown. Adult horseshoe crabs have very thick shells which protect them from many predators. Their blood is blue and used in medical research. Horseshoe crabs can live for 20 years or more.

The osprey is probably my favourite raptor. They are incredibly unique as bird species go - though they live worldwide, there's not much differentiation of distant osprey populations, which is absolutely fascinating on an evolutionary level. They have an entire taxonomic genus and family all to themselves. Osprey eat fish almost exclusively. They can grow to 2 feet long with a 6 foot wingspan (60 and 180 cm respectively). Osprey are able to close their nostrils. They mate for life, though polyandrous birds have been found. The osprey is also known as the fish hawk or seahawk.
Watching an osprey fight a bald eagle for a fish is one of the most interesting things I have ever seen.

I'm slightly obsessed with wading birds, so here we go. Roseate spoonbills are really pretty; the pink colour comes from their food, like in flamingos. They eat by filtering through mud for small crustaceans and aquatic insects, as well as the occasional fish or frog. They nest in large groups, often mingling with various egrets, herons, and pelicans; for nesting birds, there's a great deal of safety in the largest possible numbers. Spoonbills fly like cranes rather than like herons and egrets, which I'll no doubt bring up again later.
