I must refrain from posting in game threads.
I must refrain from posting in game threads

and typing that out enough times is probably meaningless when I've already managed to refrain myself by coming here to do it. Not even worth a copy + paste.

I feel like there should be a demotivator from trying to spell phony words. Wouldn't know how to do it, though.

ETA:
Perhaps checking after each move whether the spelled letters
COULD
spell a word, but that increases mod work.

Theoretically, yes. The problem I perceive the game has having is showing up when people know they're screwed, so they put a letter they know won't spell a word (or, in a couple of cases that have happened, even a non-letter symbol). That prolongs the game, and it's dragging enough as it is. It actually makes me feel glad I've already been eliminated.

Honestly, I think it's just getting everyone to post in a timely manner that's the issue; if that weren't a problem, there would be no problem with people throwing the game when they know they're screwed.

Bluffing is part of the game. The only thing that can be done is strict enforcement of timing deadlines, but it's impossible to know if someone is legitimately unavailable or if they're simply trying to avoid posting.

Then why are they being made and called at such a high rate? I understand people picking letters that spell out uncommon words to try to draw an unsuccessful challenge, but unless I have a fundamental misunderstanding of the spirit of the game...

I don't know if having it happen a lot here means it's not appropriate for the game. I suspect that it isn't often that a bluff works overall, but not every hearts game includes attempting to shooting the moon.

I don't understand why people are pulling out symbols either.
I think there's something to do with who they want to start the next word?

But at least use symbols that can actually be used to make words in languages that share characters with English.

I think the game is just meant to be done faster so it's more likely someone will miss a letter without thinking about it.
On a forum with 12 hours it's easy to look at the letters and go "no, I don't think elephang is a word."

I was just trying to be funny, but obviously failed. i only saw one option and it was to form a word everyone knew so it was just as good to get challenged on a symbol as get challenged on an obviously false word. Because the thing about this is that "bluffing" isn't really part of it at all. Because even if I don't know if you're bluffing or not, if I don't know a word that starts with the letters you started with, I'm going to challenge.

Perhaps having multiple lives here made people more likely to challenge overall (and thus reduced the utility of bluffing); the penalty for an incorrect challenge wasn't as severe as it would be in a more standard variant.
