I only play open games on marathon weekends mainly because I like piecing together what the setup is instead of having it all public in the beginning. Furthermore, open setups tend to get repetitive once you have played them enough.
That said, I don't think the queue is dying at all. It seems active enough, maybe not as active as the other queues, but it is still pretty active. We actually seem to be having the opposite issue for the other queues (normal, micro, mini theme): not enough moderators to fulfill demand. (Those queues seem to have a very short or empty moderator queue.)-

You can have some interesting normal setups. And besides, the moderation requirements are not that strictIn post 53, TemporalLich wrote:
My main problem with this is it prevents new moderators from running a setup that isn't normal or basic. In post 51, Something_Smart wrote:Experimental Open setups can just be run in the Mini Theme queue, to be honest. That queue usually moves way quicker, and open setups sometimes get run in there anyway.
Balance is important, and new moderators probably shouldn't run wild theme games, and I don't think pre-designed Mini Theme games will be a thing anytime soon.
New moderators should have an easier time getting into the bigger queues imo.
I also think it might end up diluting the theme queues if experimental opens have to be ran there, but it already is happening with opens bypassing the stagnating open queue.-

Yes, but with the normal queue having pre-designed setups, this is less of an issue. In post 68, nomnomnom wrote:
first time modding can be in the open queue so I guess it's relevant for someone like meIn post 67, FakeGod wrote:Actually, I'm of the opinion that Open Queue should be removed.
I can run any of the Open Setup games in any of the other queue when I want, so...
Can someone tell me what purpose this queue serves on this site?
I guess we don't want the normal queue 100% clogged with new moderators, but I feel we could just funnel all new mods to the normal queue.-

Yeah, I've never understood why new moderators cannot run micros. I imagine the restriction on mini themes is because new moderators have a poor sense of balance and setup design. In post 72, Jingle wrote:Speaking of which, I think we should change the rules so that a new mod can run any mini/micro game so long as a mod in good standing (eligible to run larges, hasn't modflaked ever) signs off on their setup and agrees to co/backup in order to ensure the game is run to completion.-

What evidence do you have?
As tfar as I can tell, the (mini) normal queue and the newbie queue seem to be doing well. I think the time of year is why the newbie queue's SE and mod backlog emptied. That's easily rectified though.
