When to give up your vote

There are times when it's in town's best interest to choose to abandon the majority vote - even abandon voting according to their own reads - in the interest of increasing the chances of them getting scum lims through.

I agree with this. Normally I try to work on my own leads, but if I can't generate any, I try to bandwagon off of a townreads scumread I find most reasonable. I think doing this makes myself harder to read and opens myself to accusations, but better I do that as long as it gets us scum. It's also why I like to target weaker scum players (with votes etc) as they are easier to shake up / read and hopefully that can take down the more veteran scum team mates along with them with association tells.
