While best Gambit might cause a player to gambit when he would not, instituting statistics and the like WOULD mean that people would start to make different choices in what games they play, who they play against, etc.
The entire history of ranked online gaming stands attests to this.
This.
More later, but I do support one of the Role Claim awards coming back, preferrably in a way that allows any alignment to win.

Heh. I still like you, chamber.
Oversoul wrote:One quick question, why are most of the scummies turning towards Body of Work awards? I know some of you have commented on trying to retain a few single game awards, but why the migration?
Well, most awards work as well or better as Body of Work than they do as Single Game awards (consistency, avoiding flukes/setup-gained advantages, etc). But yeah, I think we should create/reinstate some single-game Scummies. If nothing else, it reduces the number of 17-game-records the judges have to go through.

And you in particular, Mr. Flay, for making really interesting games with new mechanics and not only affecting the site through the administration side (which is very important) but also through the mafia side.
I appreciate your confidence, but my Mafia stuff can be nominated for any number of 'regular' awards. Fedora "stuff" by its very nature tends to be outside the purview of the usual... and in my opinion, the codework of Kison and chamber is the only thing that qualifies of late. It took me an embarassingly long time to step up to what needed done in mith's absence, and almost all of the features recently are theirs. I'm by nature slightly more visible, but...

jeep got it because he WAS the entire code team for many, many years.
OTOH, I think with the broadening of Team Skittles it's very possible for non-admins to get it (unless you're counting any username color/role as "admin", in which case... yeah)

See, this is exactly what I mean. I didn't "come up with" Team Skittles as an epithet, but because I used it in the public forums, I get credit for it.

Again, how do you pick the people? I originally thought you meant the players in each game vote on the players in each game, which is perhaps workable (except for flaking). But what you're talking about now seems to combine the worst of both systems (favoritism and burden of reading).

That's... a terrible way to judge that award. I'm not yelling at you, but damn. No wonder you don't like it.
Smooth Operator seems (to me) to be for the person who dealt with the unexpected/unplanned stuff well. We have separate awards for Innovative Roles or Enjoyable Setups, but this is the person who rolls with all the weird, mundane, personal crap that happens during games from other sources. They take it in stride, the game never really suffers any longer than it takes them to come visit the thread, and... yeah. Smooth.

Who gives a shit if they miss a couple vote counts. As long as the modding isn't "barely above average", and everyone has a shit ton of fun, that would be worthy in my book. A few mods come to mind.
We have that, though. There's at least one Most Enjoyable Game award, sometimes two based on size.

It's been both, depending on the year. It's a joint mod-player award, by the way I've heard it described (I think by mith, the year I won it for WIH:2).

Micros can be Normal OR Open OR Theme, though, so that kind of blows up that breakdown.
I think combining Opens and Normals means that an Open will
usually
win, while giving an outstanding Normal someplace to be judged. (edit: And I agree with you that there aren't likely to be enough innovative Normals to generate their own category).

If we must try to reward good Hydra play, one award for the first year is plenty. I don't think they're so different as you think, Town/Scum/SK. The important part here is the 'worked well together'.

I still feel like Smooth Operator needs a tweak. It definitely ought to favor nominees who 'do more', whether that's more games, more complexity, etc.
Best Flavor is a coveted award, but it's just brutal on the judges.
Best Role goes in cycles...we're not done with it yet IMO.
Overall judging seemed to stall this year more than previously. Maybe judges should start doing rankings earlier, rather than voting and then trying to tiebreak.
:edit: As much as I dislike Hydras, I think a special award for them might work. It is a unique playstyle/mechanic, and takes a particular skill. Whether that skill is actually judgable is an exercise for the reader, of course.
