Why is there such a high supply of mods?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Oct 19, 2014 4:27 pm

Post by Flubbernugget »

I've modded one game off site before and it was a fucking nightmare. Thinking up a setup was kinda fun, but keeping up vote counts, writing flavor, pm's, and all the little things nobody really notices take a huge investment of time and discipline.

One of the great things I've noticed about Mafiascum's community is the willingness of many to sacrifice their time to mod a game for the enjoyment of those like me. But the cynic in me really thinks that there's more to modding than just giving back. Otherwise mods wouldn't be waiting for months to get their games out.

What incentive is there to mod that I'm not seeing?

There's a personal joy in seeing a game you created get played.

As for newbie mods, we do it to give back to the community to make up for the newbie games we played in.

A little of the above.

Being a mod can help you build metas on those you play with frequently by seeing how they play as the game unfolds and knwing their alignment the whole time. Especially viewing the scum QT's and night actions, you can get a better of the thought processes specific to each player, and in the future have a better idea behind their motivations when you play with them.

The other part of modding is also just creating an enjoyable experience for other players, and the satisfaction that you helped to create a game-friendly environment.

I agree that it's a lot of work though, and I'd honestly rather play than mod.

I really enjoy creating interesting set-ups and see how they unfold. There are different joys in playing and modding, but joys all the same. I've always had a lot of fun making up games since I was pre-K. It's also just awesome to see people have fun with something I spent a lot of time to make fun, if that makes sense.

I also enjoy it for reasons other people has said (meta, watching, ect)

I also like resolving night actions and sending out feedbacks. Its fun to watch for me b/c when i know all the alignments and roles, i see the smallest details (slips, inadvertent crumbs to roles, whos right and whos wrong)

Its things like those that makes it fun

^This.

Also, modding is really not that difficult, especially if you create a series of documents exclusively for all the minutia. I have templates for VCs, role PMs, various mod messages, and the like saved and ready to go at a moment's notice. Frankly, it takes considerably less time and effort to mod a game than to actively play one.

Because fun.

Also: It actually requires a lot less investment to mod a game than to play some. Or at least the workload is somewhat more predictable, because you can prepare more things in advance and when the game springs a dozen pages over night, you know that you can get away with mostly just counting the votes...

1) Modding lets you actually get invested in the game and feel like you're doing something, while also not having to play and think too much.
2) You can watch things happen in real time while simultaneously knowing everything that's going on behind the scenes.
3) I think people just like being "the boss". For a few months you get to be the supreme ruler of your own tiny, tiny section of the internet. They have to follow your rules. They have to ask your permission to do certain things. People spend hours and hours and months on these games and are relying on YOU to run the game smoothly. So I think some people just crave having that kind of responsibility and having people trust them to provide entertainment.

Because demand for mods is so so so much lower than demand for players.

If all that stuff is such a pain run flavorless vanilla mountainous. It's one of the more popular set-upS here on Mafiascum because it relies on pure skill.

this.

i love modding because i like being able to give something to people that they'll enjoy. it makes me happy to see that.

plus:
- i get first hand meta, knowing what a person is from the beginning and how they act/react
- i get to meet new people and get to know them through the game - people i may not have run into otherwise
- i get to see how a person chooses to use a particular action, in a way that perhaps i never would have thought of
- i get to be involved in the game without having to be the cause or target of frustration or animosity (as long as i dont fuck up!)
- i get the chance to ensure mod errors/quirks that i personally don't like don't happen
- i get to subject people to my insanely terrible writing and be creative and have fun with pictures and stuff without having to be scumread :P
- i love coming up with setups and seeing what someone does with it.

and in the end, i think, if i do a good enough job, then i'll maybe make some new friends to look forward to playing with :]

for newbies, which i want to start modding a lot more of, i really like having the chance to be involved in a person's first experience on the site. i love it here and i wish more people would sign up. if i can have an effect on a person's decision to stay here, that's just awesome.
Art is cool.
