How do you get more engaged in games?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat Mar 28, 2015 10:34 am

I used to think lurking was my scumtell, but lately I've noticed that I just have trouble engaging games regardless of alignment or of what site I'm playing. Does anyone have advice on how to meaningfully engage in games?

Start talking, I find when I actually converse with people I start to follow and "get-into" a game a lot more. You need to do this from the start however. Otherwise you're left with a tonne that you don't want to read, making you demotivated.

fake it till you make it.

AKA pretend to be emotionally invested in the game

then you will become emotionally invested in the game.

Do you play a lot of games at a time?

I find that limiting myself to 1 is a good way to stay interested.

I struggle with this massively. I find that self-amusement works. Self-aggrandizement as a form of silly humor does the trick for me too.

Yeah, I'm normally in 3 games at a time. Although I still had this problem when I was in just 1 game at a time. Think I'll try out just talking like most of you suggested. I used to do that but stopped because I kept getting attacked for fluff posting. I guess if I give it some more practice I'll figure out the right way to do it.

I just stop caring what people think of my posting and post whatever I want in the thread. If I get pressured to post stuff I don't want to, I'll only reveal it if there's enough pressure to.

I'm more of a lone wolf type of player though, so YMMV.

Engage different slots, if someone says you're sh#t posting, start a conversation with them. If you're scum, I suggest active lurking. That occasionally works.

Friendships. You need to like a certain number of people in the game to get emotionally invested.

Alternatively, if you hate enough people in the games you'll get emotionally invested too.

But basically the worst sort of player base for a game of mafia is one that fills you with vague apathy.

I'm going to paraphrase what everyone has said in this thread : Mafia is a social game. Be social, engage with others and you'll have your reason to keep playing.

I was originally much too obsessed and attached to the game. After I realized I had a problem, I changed it. Now I'm really apathetic. Phooey. Can't I get to a state in the middle.
Maybe take a break of mafia for a bit. Or play less games so you don't burn out. I only ever play 1 game at a time.
I imagine making a hydra would also help. Active hydras always seem to be the most involved in a game.

You also need to synch well with them, and a game full of them may not be so pleasant as you'd think.

When everyone in the game is your friend, you know that some of them are your enemies, after all, and that can make reads an utter nightmare until you figure out how to overcome paranoia. Butyeah, generally, find a solid footing. It doesn't need to be permanent (though permanently solid footing would definitely help), but having it will make a huge difference.

Talking is also a huge boon. If you're actively involved in discussions, then you're going to get much more engaged as a result. It'll be slow, painful, awkward, and probably useless at first, but if you can avoid the trap of circle-jerking, then you'll make progress, figure the game out, and bam, be back up on your feet. (Assuming you're not too busy, that is. Speaking of, I really shouldn't be typing this. :shifty:)

-Make sure you aren't in more games than you can handle.
-Being transparent and/or an active participant in the main discussions helps keep you relevant.
-Have fun. You'll care more about the games you invest more effort and time in.

If there is not enough things going on or I am the sole person talking, my interest will wane. The more you involve yourself in the game, the more invested you become.
