f2f mafia

so today i went to a party and somebody suggested "lets play mafia!" (or the many names it goes by). I was v excited because i play it all the time. in fact, i thought i would be good at it because i play forum mafia all the time. although it was my first time playing f2f mafia. we played for 3+ hours.

we were playing this rather townsided 7p open setup because some pple left:
(with the game beginning at night 0)

1 goon
1 cop
1 doc (can heal himself)
a pair of mason lovers
2 VTs

earlier it was 10p (more scumwins noted) with:

2 goons
1 cop
1 doc
mason lovers
4 VTs


i am bad at mafia.

there was this girl who could read me 100%. so if i was scum, i would be insta-lynched. if I was town, a bit better, until she died. and if she was scum she would bs a read on me and i would either get mislynched or just be suckered up. she said that my scumtell was I would grin in some manner when i drew scum. derp


and my scumdar was broken. i couldn't catch shit as town lol. since f2f was more about body language and paralinguistical cues it was out of my league. I could look at someone in the eye and stare/scrutinise at them for 2 seconds and still not get a read

some of the other players were also p good and i was p impressed...

while me, the mafia 'expert', was left dumbfounded 'how the fuck do you play this game'

what are you guys' experience with f2f mafia?

i laughed at your recap hehe, i didn't expect it to be so fun, i liked the intense 3-player lylo :p

the 7p setup wasn't very good though, definitely town-sided, i think we played quite a bit of the 8p setup right, with an extra goon, that was better.

don't think we played much of the 10p setup from what i can remember.

same. haven’t played since the 90’s. but grinning and flapping my hands is alignment indicative for me.

On the forum at least if someone says “you town?” I can say “yes” and they will get nothing out of the exchange. in real life, asking me a question like that and it’s a trust tell i can’t help but commit and i can’t fake it as the opposite alignment even if i try.

and i can’t read anybody and everyone is talking at once and i can’t follow the conversation and my speech isn’t communicative enough to really participate out loud.

I suck at Face to Face mafia too.
I am usually lynched day 1 if I am town. I have learned that barely speaking gives me better results than opening my mouth and inciting town's wrath.

I have this problem of looking guilty and smiling regardless of my alignment. :/

We played mafia at Ausmeet. There were only five of us so we played vengeful.

Basically if Hanasawa talked, she was town.
If DV didn't burst out laughing at some point, he was town.
If I fucked up heads up/down, I was scum.

Most games were solvable from there.

I find that I have to get in a groove with f2f

I also find that it is much more reliant on finding meta tells and simply being charismatic enough to talk people into doing what you want

they can't go back over your previous arguments, after all

my experience with F2F mafia:

1. Mara reading me correctly, in under a minute, every single game - to the point where Magua would ask her for her read on me and then immediately announce "OK THEN, PIE IS X" afterward.

2. me thinking Tammy was scum in every game

3. me applying the exact same meta tell to SleepyKrew that I always use in forum mafia and actually having it work

I was usually really wrong and lost every game until the very last game I played where Magua and I bloc'ed up in 4p and won the game (featuring me using the aforementioned meta tell on SK who was scum). I need redemption ._.//

The last half results in people solving how I play and getting lynched every game

I played a bit of f2f mafia with inexperienced players recently. One game at the beginning of D1, after the nightkill's flip, there was litterally no discussion, so another players went ahead and said "Come on guys, say something", and I immediately answered "Something". Once everyone else was done laughing and applauding, I added "Please don't lynch me". I was instantly quicklynched.

Speaking of broken setups, the French card version of Werewolf has a role called the Little girl, who is allowed to spy on the scum team during their turn. Has anyone ever heard of a more overpowered role?
