People who replace out are likely to be lurkers (because that's what causes them to be replaced out in most cases), and are possibly the sort of player who tends to get annoyed easily and replaces tactically as a result (this shouldn't happen, but it does). Either will make them look scummy. Thus, when someone replaces in, they typically are genuinely townier than the person they replaced.

Town-reading people who replace in thus isn't that ridiculous a thing to do on theory grounds, as long as you're aware that it's a relative thing; just because people were seeing the slot as scummier than they probably should have done doesn't mean that the slot isn't actually scum.

Right. No, I understand that. They are more likely to be town, but I've also been in games where scum replace out. I just began catching myself recently ASSUMING they're town.
