game of mafia is disgusting

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Aug 25, 2016 1:32 pm

90% of the time im playing this game i feel odd bittrness. i like it in theory, i like the complexity that arises from simple principles. and other things. but i cant seem to "remove" myself from the game. i cant detach myself to a degree that makes the uneasiness go away. the game is kinda gross. idk why i play it.

ofcourse it's worse when i roll scum and find myself strategically ease into the sidelines while town run eachother up to the point of meltdown. playing as town sucks too. i couldnt really handle playing the game with people im familiar with. bc niceness is complicated and it's hard to straight up call people out on stupid moves without dissociating from the personal apects...which i couldnt do. im starting to have this problem here, as players become more recurring in games i play, they strt to look more and more personable, and manipulation or callous shit makes me feel even shittier.
and its fucking sad when ure town and then find out you've been pushing the wrong people. its sad bc it means that something went awfully wrong with communication. and it keeps happening and that's sad...it kinda reminds me of a a part called exhautive discussion in a short czech film i saw years ago ...anyway all of this is sad and this game is awful...i love it and furiously hate it at the same time

the bitterness is not always there tho, there are rare cases where majority of the playerlist is composed of fun shitposters and nothing in the game ever feels real. that's rarely the case tho.

It's a game of deception and manipulation.

Think of it this way. Pretend you play Counter Strike. Here comes the guy on the other team, but you don't want to shoot him because then you feel sorry for him having to sit out. He then shoots you. Now you're sitting out.

Each and every one of us knows what we're signing up for when we play this game. Most of the time we leave it at the door and we have positive interactions outside of games. But inside a game, you're a player and potentially an enemy within the rules. No different than any other game, and there are plenty that involve deception.

i doubt any one hates you over your scum play kraska

i'm sure nobody has hard feelings over newbie 1718

in fact aren't you and giga hydraing?

drpepper was going to go crazy in some game. it's better that scum!RC gave him a push than someone legitimately townie and scumhunting him. he landed on feathers imo.

just find a way to make it fun, you're the only one that's going to hold a grudge unless you're a total asshole.

personally i have a high degree of guilt and shame as well, but since i'm not an asshole mafia is nothing to me

all games ive played so far, with the expection of one or two, made me feel real shitty to varying degrees...but that newbie game is the worst for sure
i dont really hold grudges against anyone
i just find it difficult to detach myself from the stuff i say and do while playing
i try to make it fun but sometimes the playerbase makes it toxic and i get carried away with the toxicity too

I mean, I've had people have grudges against me for things I've said or done in games, but I could count those on one hand.

And to be fair at least two of them have extremely valid points, and one of them is flat-out correct and I just don't see the point in admitting that because we find one another to be insufferable.

if you're having fun, no matter what you're doing, then it's all good. Just have fun with it, as long as you're playing the game, that is. I mean, if you're not having fun in general, then Mafia just simply isn't the game for you.

i no longer strictly go by they/them and honestly prefer she/her but they/them's fine if you're used to it i guess

I'm sorry to hear that kraska... I think in your particular situation you had some bad luck with how people took it.

The games I've played people usually don't feel too bad, maybe a few overreact in the moment but realise it later.

Overall if people don't enjoy the game in general they can and do just stop playing right? So in theory most are either still having fun or are otherwise addicted in some fucked up way or something. But you really shouldn't feel bad for playing to your wincon as scum or especially for making a mistake as town.

If you go out of your way to be manipulative in a sleazy way or intentionally do something you know will probably hurt people's feelings then that's WAY different... but you can play scum in an ethical way I think. Many games I've seen the experience was fun enough that both sides considered it worthwhile.

That means it took less than a year!

Really impressive that you managed to discover this so quickly.

take breaks.

thats what I do.

I play mafia for a month or 2 per year, get worn out and then go away and come back a year later, play a few games, get worn out, leave.

rinse and repeat.

rinse and repeat.

Has stopped me going off the deep end and I'll admit some of my best games are from the 2nd or 3rd time I came back. It puts up a sort of layer of nostalgia between yourself and the other players so it stops getting so personal and vindictive.

Also leads to a number of other things

1. keeps things fresh as things can change in a year. last time I came back every game seemed to be embracing daychat for scum. While prior to that daychat was very rare

2. Tends to keep the people you play against diverse with less of the cynical *i know you* sort of plays. I'm pretty sure both Frozen Angel and Albert B rampage have calmed down by now (I hope)

3. makes it easy to detach yourself. You're both mysterious (cause you've not been around) but also devilishly experienced (because you do have X games under your belt).

and best of all when you feel exhausted just take a break.

did you really just imply frozen angel and albert b rampage were in the same league of blowing up at people??

4 years ago albert was. There were a series of games me and him kept ending up together that got very heated. Maybe he has calmed down since, but I do know we had to agree not to play in the same game for a while after that.

Frozen angel is just poking a bit of fun because of how a game I played against her ended.
