Newbie 1559:
Conversations with Puck of Pook's Hill

Moderator: fferyllt

Image

Donald Mackenzie, who wrote the introduction for the Oxford World's Classics edition of Puck of Pook's Hill in 1987, has described this book as an example of archaeological imagination that, in fragments, delivers a look at the history of England, climaxing with the signing of Magna Carta. This mafia game will explore the people and events of historical England, transformed by fantasy into an alternate history that may or may not give rise to the Present Day that we know and perhaps even love.

Welcome to Newbie 1559!

Voting and Deadlines:

1. Voting must be bolded in the form
Vote: Player
- bold tags

Code: Select all

Vote: Player
or

VOTE: Player vote tags

Code: Select all

[vote]Player[/vote]

or else they will not be counted. Unvotes are not required to change your vote, but they are helpful. Please note: I'm using an automated vote counter. If you don't use the vote tags, be sure to add a colon after the word "Vote".

2. I don't mind if you use nicknames/abbreviations when you vote someone. But if I have no idea who you're voting for, then the vote won't be counted. Please note: the vote counting application may be more finicky about nicknames than I am. If you notice that your vote hasn't been recorded, please let me know.

3. Lynches require a majority of votes: (number of living players/2) +1, rounded down.

4. If there's no majority at deadline, there's no lynch.

5. When the hammer vote is cast, all players, including the lynched may talk freely until the final vote count and lynched player's cardflip have been posted. I will lock the game thread at that time.

6. When you are hammered, on the following day, you may make a "bah" post with no game-relevant information. Nothing more.

7. Deadlines are set at two weeks and extensions will only be given in the most extreme of circumstances.

Prods and Replacements:

1. Prods will be given if you do not post in
48 hours
. Weekends count as a single full day in determining if a prod is due.

2. You will be replaced if you either do not respond to a prod, or need to be prodded more than 3 times total. You may request for a player to be prodded at any time, but the less you request, the happier your mod is. Prods requested when a player has been absent for less than 48 hours do not count for replacement purposes.

3. If you're V/LA, make sure I know. If you are V/LA for more than a week, I'd suggest requesting replacement, but that's not required. If a lengthy V/LA is adversely affecting the game (e.g., if you are not able to post minimally during that time), then your mod may replace you.without penalty.

Misc.

1. Dark Blue (#004080) is the color I will use for mod posts. Please don’t use this color or otherwise try to make your posts look like mod posts..

2. You can talk about the game in the private threads given to you via PM. Otherwise, please refrain from talking about this game outside of this thread, and don't talk about other games inside of this game. This is a sitewide rule. See announcement here.

3. No editing, deleting, using invisible texts, write in code, etc...

4. Don't quote or talk about any mod-recieved PMs. Your flavor is for you to enjoy and you only until the end of the game.

5. I make mistakes. If you notice I make one, please let me know.

6. Questions are vastly preferable to Modkills. If you're thinking about to do something that you're unsure is within the letter or spirit of these rules and the game of mafia, then tell me about it.
Amid the pressure of great events, a general principle gives no help.

Each Newbie Game will be given a setup that incorporates either one row or one column. The remaining six roles will be filled in by mafia goons and vanilla townies appropriately, to create a 2-mafia and 7-town setup. For example Row 1 (1 jailkeeper, 1 vanilla townie, 1 mafia goon) would add an additional 5 vanilla townies and 1 mafia goon, for a total setup of 1 jailkeeper, 6 vanilla townies, and 2 mafia goons.

*Roleblocker will take precedence over jailkeeper when resolving night actions should that apply.

. The game will start once at least 7 players have confirmed receipt of their role PMs via reply.

I'll update this post as the pregame activities progress.

UPDATE 1: Role PMs have gone out!

UPDATE 2: 5 of 7 needed confirmations received.

Day 1 begins!

P
uck's Song

See you the dimpled track that runs,
All hollow through the wheat?
O that was where they hauled the guns
That smote King Philip's fleet!

See you our little mill that clacks,
So busy by the brook?
She has ground her corn and paid her tax
Ever since Domesday Book.

See you our stilly woods of oak,
And the dread ditch beside?
O that was where the Saxons broke,
On the day that Harold died!

See you the windy levels spread
About the gates of Rye?
O that was where the Northmen fled,
When Alfred's ships came by!

See you our pastures wide and lone,
Where the red oxen browse?
O there was a City thronged and known,
Ere London boasted a house!

And see you, after rain, the trace
Of mound and ditch and wall?
O that was a Legion's camping-place,
When Caesar sailed from Gaul!

And see you marks that show and fade,
Like shadows on the Downs?
O they are the lines the Flint Men made,
To guard their wondrous towns!

Trackway and Camp and City lost,
Salt Marsh where now is corn;
Old Wars, old Peace, old Arts that cease,
And so was England born!

She is not any common Earth,
Water or Wood or Air,
But Merlin's Isle of Gramarye,
Where you and I will fare.

Good morning y'all. Let the RVS begin.
Vote: Splashcloud
. Just because it's raining and splashcloud reminds me of rain.

Questions:
1: How much experience do you have? It doesn't matter if it is reading games or participating in them.
2: When are you inclined to be more inactive? Not just when you're busy or V/LA.

Answers to my own questions:
1: I have participated in mafia games on other websites, but I am new to this website. I actually just joined a few days ago, but I am somewhat experienced in mafia.
2: I am more inclined to be inactive when I really have nothing to add or contribute. People have accused me of lurking, but that's just my style. I like to post more helpful posts, not just trash.

1. I've played a bit of mafia in another site.

2. When I'm not online, I guess?

I also tend to post gifs a lot~ (cat gifs in particular)

I see no reason to vote right now.

As for those questions..

1: I've played a lot of matches in a game called "HLDCN" (Actually, that's not its name, just the first letter of every word), which is quite similar to mafia (Replace mafia with werewolves and thats it). Also, I've played some matches on epicmafia.

2: Quite similar to williaw actually, I tend to not write anything unless It's needed, and people say that I lurk quite a bit. I'm trying to change that, but as people say, old habits die hard.

The point of voting now is because of RVS (random voting stage). I'm not sure if it is used here, but in the websites I play in, we use random voting to test reactions and see for any clues of scum. RVS is a stage where you can kinda joke around and reaction test, and once we get a target, we can actually get serious.

There is no doubt that scum will be more careful. But when pressured, scum will be pressured more on getting the attention off themselves/defending themselves, not thinking about what they should/should not say.

Anything else you want to reveal openly to scum about what they should be watching out for?

You know, I feel like you're saying all these things to "secretly" warn your scum buddy about what he/she should be looking out for :shifty:

But that's assuming they don't have day chat :o I don't know what it's normally like in this site but the mafia games I've played, scum usually didn't have day chat, only night chat.

From your friendly IC, a few things that might help you in your time here:

Read this, this, and/or this. They will help explain things that I might over look or not think I need to explain. If you have any questions about navigating the main page of the wiki, or anything else that happens in-game, I’d be more than happy to answer them.

Claiming:
Do not claim, except in the cases of L-1 or LyLo (if you don't know what these terms mean, where are you going to find them? If you answered "the wiki", you win. What you win is irrelevant). Claiming only serves two purposes: it gives scum more information than they need to have, and it distracts town.

Please note:
"Town" is an alignment. By being town-aligned, you can have one of a few roles: Cop, Doctor, Jailkeeper, Bullet Proof, or Civilian (also known as Vanilla Townie - VT - or townie). Saying that you are townie, VT, or civilian means that you are claiming a role, even if not a power role. You don't want to do this, as it can narrow the field on potential legitimate power roles, thus making it easier for the scum to pick them off.

Voting:
You should do it. Do not be afraid to vote. Voting can and does create discussion. Even if you think you don't have enough evidence for a vote, feel free to lay out what you do have. More discussion helps town. Less discussion hurts town. If you still don't think you have enough for a vote, lay out your evidence and add a FoS - finger of suspicion, meaning you find the person suspicious but aren't ready to vote.

Please note:
DO NOT BE AFRAID TO DIE. Remember, you win if your alignment wins,
NOT
if you survive until the end. Yes, it sucks to get killed, but the goal is to win, not to survive.

Posting:
You should do it. You should always do your best to post your thoughts as often as possible because posting generates discussion.

My suggestion:
Go for posting at least once a day, if not more. Sometimes games vary in discussion levels, but the easiest way to catch scum is by getting them to talk, and the easiest way to catch those who don’t talk is by posting. The scum are not going to sit around with signs over their heads asking to be caught. You have to ask the hard questions and get them out into the open and make them mess up or say things they shouldn't. And I don't mean ask questions like, "How are you doing today?" Ask people about their motivations for doing things, or why they said things the way they did. Mafia is a game of details, and sometimes you have to be nitpicky.

Wall posts:
Theoretically this helps the town because you’re getting you’re ideas out there for the town to see, read, and ultimately assess and analyze their own reads from; however, the more that’s written, the less people want to read, and the more that gets lost in translation.

My suggestion:
Preview your posts to make sure only what needs to be said is said. Also, separate ideas by paragraphs, with a couple sentences each. This allows longer posts to be read with ease, and will more likely help others see all the information you/d like to say as opposed to potentially glossing over something that could be really important. Note how I’m formatting this post, though a little paragraphy as it is (also note that I don’t expect everyone to all of a sudden post this way ;) ).

1. Plenty!
2. I'm not really inactive outside of V/LAs in Newbie games. In other games I'll tend to fall silent because I don't like going "what he/she said" all the time, since I'm usually not the first to draw conclusions of my own. That being said, I will do that plenty in Newbie games because it's my role as an IC to encourage the good (and the bad) questions and conclusions as I see them. I haven't been scum in a really long time so I can't say that any of my inactivity is directly alignment indicative.

What information do you hope to gain from these questions/their answers?
