FYI: friend’s wedding today. Full day affair into hotel sleep into starting up work again after 2 months. Lots of house cleaning, reconnecting etc etc. I’ll probably still find time to brain paste all over these fields, but like, in case I can’t. Tentative V/LA.

I find someone explaining themselves is the best, but the hoi polloi disagree.

In short, in bold, how are you? Why are you?
Explain your mafia experience from page 1 to page infinitesimally close to infinity.

Why are you title but also townie, but also here outside of the newbies.

Hi super! It’s nice to play with you again. I feel like we never really interact, but it’s always been a pleasure to be in games with you. Just a decent blend.

Man, my play style has only actually gotten more isolated as time goes on. Well maybe this game will be different than last game. Though I dunno why.

The wedding was great, but the wedding was a wedding and weddings is hard for people like me.

I do think something that starts with Y will be okay to read with time just based on what they’ve said. Rather readability is there. But I’m not sure what kind of read I’ll develop.

Right now they’re just kind of tripping my sense that they’re not suspicious of me, even though they cast aspersions of my obvtowness. But they did it in like, that polite way that’s just like, eh. They aren’t pressing x to doubt it the way I might expect, but people be different in how they doubt. I liked their Datisi thing, it sounded like something I’d write, but also, ironically, like something I’d write as either alignment because it’s, well, stereotypically thoughtfulish.

anyway why would you expect me to be overly suspicious of you if i don't believe you to be obvtown? like do you believe you to be obvtown here? i don't really get it

funny to me that you're like 'oh katya is casting aspersions of my obvtowness but they're not openly suspicious' when you're also like, 'it wrote a thing that i liked but would write as either alignment'

like yeah, bingo, that's all of your posting thus far this game to me why would that make you obvtown
I expect you to be normally suspicious of me.
Using an ellipses to convey that you’re too polite to say something about mala if they think how you might think they think. while conveying you’re not polite enough to omit the ellipses so as to imply what you think about what they might think about. just comes off as if you’re bored or something.

I’m obviously obvious town. But it’s too early for me to say it yet. *checks watch*

@shadi, I elaborated on it already. Mostly I got confused and thought they had a title because I didn’t think Katya was a pronoun, rather that it was a title from the players while it/she pronouns. It was incongruent with their post count so I wanted to find out what was up.

And then I did.
And it was done.
And that is all.

To my knowledge that’s about right. Then again, the reading of mala versus the reading of bell does not go both ways.

I’ve always had a pretty hard time reading her. The game has a way of working them out though. Rather, it’s never been super detrimental for me to just sit there and let her work herself out.

You’re complaining about not getting credit for something they probably wouldn’t notice as either alignment. Now saying I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t, in a tortured reference of two things that don’t really have to do with each other.

I’d be awol if I were scum unfortunately.
I got punched in the face yesterday by a 6 year old and I’m processing that. It’s the kind of thing I’d use as an excuse to avoid posting but also, I can’t really force myself to post. I have a hard time as scum.

It’s my general policy to talk to everybody and engage. I like solving even though I’m extremely shit at it. But it’s been busy, so not as much solving and I’d like.

It’s unusual for someone to say during a game of mafia that their emotions were correctly interpreted and that because a player was being stubborn in following up on those questions it’s alignment indicative. There’s also little in the way of wishy washiness, compare ari’s read of me to their read of bulge and it pretension wafts from it.

That said,

@shadi What do you think of sheep and Dunn?

I’ve cooled down from a very slight scum lean to a mild town lean with the genuine caveat that I’m not sure if I’m looking at them with the right lenses. I’m not really excited with any of my reads this game. On the bright side, I haven’t death tunneled into a townsperson. I’m sure they appreciate it.

I’m not sure if you’re referring to where you speculated Y something was partners with Datisi, or where you started to town lean on Y something. I don’t do partner associations before flips or rather, I don’t take them seriously in my head.

Part of my play style is to antagonize people.
That’s a very negative way to put it.
Part of my play style is to apply pressure/poke at people. I don’t like when there are unreadable players or people that don’t participate in a way that I feel is likely to be interpretable to me. The closer to deadline we get the more I want to poke people. I was just rereading the game and saw a dropped ball.

@Dunn. No. None of that.

Autocorrecting the first letter to the First Lady sure is a thing. I didn’t capitalize them either is the First Lady and first gentle supposed to be capitalized. Are they god. Or I see how it is you won’t capitalize god but you’ll capitalize the First Lady.

You’re looking at a game you feel is dead and seemingly not interested in injecting life in it.
You spoke about wanting good vibes at the start of the game. But aren’t seemingly interested in contributing to it.

I lean slightly town on Katya, bulge he went down a little but still town, with decent vibes and asides. Albeit I’ve been stabbed by him, twice. Maybe just once.
Mala feels alright, as does Super Bowl, but I’m not against more pressure on either of them.
Dunn is being Dunn.

Meow said they came back from New Orleans or something but also got prodded but also said the power or their laptop wasn’t working which is some kind of mystery. I’m not sure if it’s a gimmick for each reentry or if they’re actually just scum lying about their absences but it’s so silly that I can’t actually take myself seriously when I think it.

Sheep is obviously scum.
STD is my favorite this game. but also, they are extremely scummy and furthermore

Shadi’s weird. I don’t have a box to put them in, I agree with whoever said they seem to be people pleasey, but also I can see it just being them.

The only thing I have on Datisi is the Bulge town read weirdness. The rest seems fine to me.

I’m not really happy with my reads so far this game, but that’s cool. I usually just get a few town reads I’m comfortable with (I only have one). But like that’s why I’m being how I’m being.

People always get pissy at me for taking forever to vote. He could be leaning into it though, yeah it is more severe than I’d expect.
I’m mostly not a fan of a different post he made, but I’m not going to comment on it. Partly because it’s less AI and more of a utility he flushed down the drain for no reason that I can see except he either didn’t think it would matter later or he thinks he’s being irreverent when he’s just making a simple error.

Oh no, my scum game sucks. But I try to appear more competent and useful when I’m scum.

The bulge thing was a half joke. Their town reads hit a critical mass, so I said the opposite to reduce the possibility of an nk, but I’m not invested in it enough to keep the joke going. Which is also something I do. The other half of the joke is that scum are town reading him too so they must be happy with him. Because he’s scum which eh sometimes scum try to get to read too much and overshoot. But it’s not a thing.

I don’t think they’ve been trying especially hard to be townie this game though. But now I’m paranoid on second thought.

Thanks for that.

Yes, this was answered.

I'm glad that Bulge has a functioning sarcasm detector.
Albeit, I also enjoy mind games.
Uh. So I guess I need to explain the concept of people not always saying what they mean or meaning what they say.
In regards to Meep I think I've pretty much already covered that I'll push people if I don't think they're playing in such a way I can read them.
do you have any other opinions or reads Sheep or is Bell scum because he's going after the lurkers about surmises it?

The amount of credulousness Drew gave Meep raised my eyebrows. But not enough to get off my ass. I feel like he just gave a non-answer agreement, or what do you call it. It's hen you find something to agree with someone on that isn't really what they were talking about. In this case, he agreed that lurkers = scum is bad, intentionally agreeing with something Meep wasn't saying. Meep was saying he thought that it was weird that I seemed to genuinely believe that lurkers should die because they are likely to be scum. Essentially they thought something was off (they found the sarcasm) but couldn't put together what (the sarcasm), exactly the mystery belied. It was kind of funny. But Drew didn't do anything with it other than avoid disagreeing with them.

You didn't engage with Meeps open question of whether Bell believed what he was saying or doing, but instead provided the platitude that reduction-ism is bad and left it there. I've already made posts that provide clarity about what I'm actually doing, i.e., pressuring people with threats, thin veneers of ones at that, which resulted in confusion for those less inclined toward reading. adding "totally" to "I think they're scum" is intended to be self depreciating. It' silly on it's face because, obviously, I don't know who the scum are.

Right the point. The point is instead of examining whether Meep had a point or in my case whether they're serious or not or intentionally missing the sarcasm or just not bothering to read earlier posts you basically just agreed on an easy point to agree on. You didn't seem inclined to check what they were thinking or why.

To be fair, I always get all annoyed when other people don't defend me even when it makes no logical sense. But then I worked through that to come to your post just being a little strange.

....Why do I have to use so many words to make a small point that barely means anything in the gran scheme of the game.
It's a minor observation at best and unlikely to be reliable as a scum tell.
I might as well have commented on the weather.

1. Meep says it's weird that I unironically seem to think that lurkers are more likely to be scum than not.
2. My confidence in the read was fake, intended to pressure them. I've made a few posts pointing out that I pressure players I can't read because I'm trying to find the scum and so on.
3. You respond to Meep and instead of focusing on what Meep is thinking "it's weird that he seems to think this" you agree that people thinking that lurkers are scummy is bad and end it at that.
4. This demonstrates you didn't read my earlier posts or did read my earlier posts but couldn't put it together or decided not to investigate what they were saying in a meaningful way and just gave a bog-standard response. Or decided that while you did read my posts and understood what I was doing it didn't serve your interest to correct them. Or investigate their reasoning further.

Lukewarm isn't here so I'm not gunna write it a 5th time if you still don't get it. Or pretend not to get it or whatever it is you're doing.
I'd say that you should understand what I'm writing because you've played mafia for awhile, but I can be difficult to understand and follow and this loop isn't atypical. I usually have to do this once every other game.

That’s a typical response but doesn’t really mean much without specifics. Our attention and what we think is important differs from each individual. With some overlap, honestly probably too much overlap on basic agreed upon alignment indicators.

Yeah. I’m mercurial. My reads change on a dime and I don’t always mean what I say or say what I mean. I play the game kind of like a mix of poker, i bluff, I lie, I come up with minor schemes and plans to get people to reveal alignment stuff.

I also brain dump every thought that goes through my head when I’m pressured either because I’m about to die or I’ve survived long enough that I have a responsibility to solve and to prevent myself from getting miseliminated.

It’s hard to emulate, so my scum game suffers as a result.

I don’t think my play style is unusual though. It’s an unusual mix, but separately, not.

I thought it was in direct reference to you.

I'm just gunna lurk and wait. My basic case for Sheep is that they're unreadable and intentionally being so. The only reason that they have such a narrow view of the game is because they're choosing to minimize what they share.

One, literally had no idea you were voting me.

Two, you kept saying you couldn't really describe the town read on ari.......then all of sudden you could.

So ya, phony.
There aren’t many ways to interpret “off” as anything other than to to jump off of and jump onto someone else. Or in this case, switch votes.

I’ll be here to kill whoever we end up killing. I don’t think the meta argument for sheep town works in this context. It’s certainly not enough to give them a pass.

I will literally vote anyone if the deadline gets close enough. I’d prefer sheep. I’m curious what Meow flips but not curious enough to lend it more weight than it has. Your point about Datisi, isn’t enough to move me but they already spilled some beans so I’m apathetic toward trying to save him, which I’m not inclined to do. Twice shy. Nobody’s really given me a good reason to go after Shadi, they’re not making it to end game at their current pace tho.

I don’t really think Katya has said vaguely townie things. Mostly it’s just that they’re unique, here when they could coast and are pretty consistent with their pushes to get things moving if they can. I don’t agree with whoever said votes moving is important at this phase of the game. They’re doing enough to offset whatever effect not throwing their vote around wildly would have.

I’ve intentionally avoided making posts that would be unproductive to conversation. I wrote them but then deleted them  . It’s a sign of growth.

We’ve played together one other time, a year ago? I’m fully capable of being a smarmy wise ass as scum. It’s one of the only things that seems to translate fine between alignments.

The problem with my wit is that it comes at other people’s expense.

Example of a deleted post in response to drew saying he wanted to play mafia, not read war and peace.
“I did, one day I saw Mastina’s posts and I knew this was where I belonged. Also don’t be a baby and crack open a dictionary, you joined a game that is entirely made of words what the fuck?”

Not nice.

Not much. He’s always been on the periphery of games I’ve played with him. He’s fun to play with. I don’t think he’s done anything that warrants the number of votes he’s gotten.

But I could say the same for a number of players who should have a lot more votes but don’t. Game’s weird.

Regarding dog perspective. It’s complicated to explain but I’m usually working from a political perspective rather I entertain a lot of different perspectives including what I’d be doing as scum as town. Looking at trejectories of where players seem to be going etc.

Like “ boy, it sure would be funny if I was bussing here” or “I’d do this as scum, but I’m not, sucks”

I don’t really think that’s showing much this game though. So, I’d prefer you elaborate on specific examples if you can, Katya.

Like, as scum why am I hanging here and posting instead of just going off and enjoying my life. Nobody is going to think about that, even though it’s pretty AI for me.

I think I got spoiled by all the people that just instantly know I’m town within the first 30 pages. Alas.

Std, mala both did that.
Dunn isn’t voting me, so I’m assuming he’s town reading me because he correct estimates that my scum game sucks.

But they’re also not super active. Unlike the Notsciences, or Cabd or ffyrlit’s of the world that will slap down people for looking at me cross when they think I’m town.

Dunnstral’s more quiet than I’m used to him being at deadline. It could be that he doesn’t like this game, but his circumstances have probably changed so it seems pointless to guess using ancient data.

In the best of fashions you’re both right.
It’s a joke because Dunnstral annoys me with his play style and when we first played together I pushed at him * a lot* to read him. So it’s like a policy. But I’ve kind of given up, I’ve told him before that I don’t think he’s very readable day one unless he engages more and he’s not bucking that trend here.

But in addition it’s usually just a good idea to push people. But I’m not clear why Dunn is missing here.

If a Dunnstral wagon ever materialized this game day one I probably would have been pointedly not defending him while pretending I’m just holding off but I think he might be scum, while not actually having a clue. Just to get a better read of him. My conclusions reached from whatever happened there I would have probably diminished confidence in just because I don’t actually believe any of my reads have any accuracy whatsoever.

But as mentioned, I will kill anyone before deadline. But it’s not happening, nor should it happen.

Unless he’s scum in which case it should happen, but I dunno.

So I was doing the reading thing after a nap and I stopped after reaching the point when SB said: “Dont bother meta is useless and mine is even moreso useless”

Just kidding I finished. After a review of 3 games and I don’t got nuffin. I guess the fact he broke out the quotes is slightly different but mostly I just have a head ache now.

Dbz, mininormal 2234 and AI upick part 2. In reverse order.
Scum, town, scum (but it's multiball so it's not really the same thing).

I already posted my thought process. But in actuality, I was actually pretty serious in my answer.
You're not a mason.
You're mad for reasons that appear to be self-serving/meant to protect you.
Your Bulge read is bad and weird and saying "k" when I challenged you on it, while adorably smug, just made me feel bad but didn't give me anything to work with. s
It's deadline.
I don't have a plan except to go over your posts if you flip scum for associatives and to examine where everybody was if you're not to see if anyone seemed more informed than otherwise.
It's always awkward to kill the mad players because I never know if I'm about to insult them if they flip town, but it's half and half and I'm sorry if I'm wrong.Wouldn't be the first time.
I'm happy to kill Meep though.
Seriously, really wanna kill Meep.

*takes off gloves*
I respect people that deny things in like a play for power or whatever. But you're not reading Katya's post you fop. They've made multiple posts hesitating on you and I see a mad lad who has brought up they don't like this game, like twice.
As for my confidence or whatever. I am literally never confident. If I voted Sheep, I would be wondering if they were gunna flip town or scum.
if I vote you I'm going to be wondering if it's town or scum.
I don't know who the scum are.

Yes, I did notice their posting rate was different in the one town game I reviewed and the two scum games I reviewed. I
I don't have to go over why that's probably not relevant unless you're as bad at playing as mafia as I am, do I?

Yes, I noticed the lack of aggressiveness or the softer touch. At least initially, but they also made similar jokes and had similar conversations in normal. They also became sharper once they got poked here.
They also said twice in that game not to meta them because they intentionally change their meta from game to game and generalizations based on that sample size over that time frame isn't a good idea.

In games when players have been angry with me it rarely mattered if I thought they were scum or town or whether I was undermining them in terms of others reads of them by preaching caution or by undercutting their scum reads or targets. People can get mad at me and it will effect my reads and approach to them even if I think they're scum, because I'm not *sure* they're scum. Rather, I rarely think and most don't think "player x is scum, Player y is town" we're not binary in our thinking like that, it's an oversimplification you're providing and not a particularly common one at your level of play.

My intention is to sit on the sidelines and poke people. You’ve been poked. Your reaction is “I don’t see the town motivation in being poked in this way” which I don’t find particularly useful.

Pedit: sure. But he presented it as wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff right out. Or the emotional equivalent anyway. Not the best take ever, but far be it from me to criticize someone for not articulating themselves good.

If I’m town and you’re saying I’m lining up lims as scum am I supposed to think “bright lad, he’s got me, shame about the town role pm but maybe next time”.

Or do you think I’m going to think. After explaining myself, “well, this guy sucks. “

Well that’s kind of the point. My sense of humor is very much for me, but not for thee.

You didn’t, I just genuinely don’t think it’s a good idea for me to start pushing an elimination when there are unknowns.
This is part of why I wanted to kill Sheep.
When you let half the game be composed of people that don’t have that immediacy to them, it makes it hard to get RT interactions, albeit it’s not an expectation of forum mafia for this to be the case. I do better when it is though.
Or I have more fun anyway.

Why shad? because of the little scum tell trips of the traditional variety.

I noticed some players including me controlling for expectations out the game I tend to associate this more with scum. But unlike me who said it and then proceeded to do the opposite of that Shadi gradually birched out, but with these like, large posts. They have a reactivity to them, rather, a passivity that I also associate with some types of scum. They could be lazy tho. I don’t like their read of me and I don’t like how squarish they are when interpreting the game.

I like SB this game and I don’t really think they’re mafia, they’re also readable in a way that I don’t think Shadi is. Or maybe Shadi is just scum and they are readable. Just in that kind of common way.

Shadi, quick question, do you enjoy playing mafia or town more?

I really want to develop reads on other players though.

Ohh, I broke one of my own rules on not using the “I don’t like” wording.

Alas. Rules I make for myself must be cast aside the rocky shores when they are no longer useful.

I blame the rest of the town for this.

Nah drew actually engages so just avoiding it for the politics of it is lame, Bell.

Sometimes when I’m scum and bored I focus more on getting to know people because I already know what their alignment is.
This can come off as a curiosity about stuff that doesn’t matter or isn’t alignment related.

It’s a self-tell, but I think it probably apply to other people. Because I understand the idea that people gravitate to the fun parts of stuff and avoid tedium. Scum faking suspicion is boring. Getting to know people is fun.

Fos etc etc, and so on, probably not the lim today.

Then again they don’t really engage, rather they just kind of talk at you. But maybe it’s better to say they engage on their own terms.

Mm, words fail me.
Whatever.

The aristocrats, I knew it.

You want to see where the flow goes and where the opportunities are. Got it. That’s not scummy.

Ohhh, same, I like mountainous set ups.
Yeah sure your activity is the same as either alignment, but do you engage people and the game in the same way?

Describe how you’d be approaching this game as if you were scum here and what you’d be doing differently from that if you were town.
