A quiet fishing village nestles within the cliffs of a remote part of Northwestern Europe. So remote that its only access from land is via a picturesque winding narrow road. The village had remained remote for years but now was becoming an ideal stop over point for summer tourism. This of course bought a growth to its income and growing economic stability.

But that was during the summer. Now, in the middle of the bleak winter, things were gravely different. The road offered only a dangerous and perilous journey through snow and ice and was often blocked to all but the foolhardy. The seas were rough and dangerous often closing the small harbor as huge waves crashed into the outer sea defenses.

Now on a dark and forlorn night you and the rest of the town council gather to discuss how best to use the summer income to meet the challenges of these bleak winters. As you arrive in the town hall meeting room there is the sound of a gunshot from the floor above.

Everyone rushes to the first floor where a gruesome sight is discovered. In the dark confined space of the communications and telephone exchange room, slumped over his desk, is the communications technician with a bullet hole in his head. It is also clear that those responsible did not want word to get out as all the communications equipment in the room had been sabotaged and is unusable.

It seems impossible, but winter is suddenly even darker and colder than before. Summer plans are forgotten as you realize your very survival is threatened in this bleak isolation.

Rules

Respect each other. Intolerance will not be tolerated.

Play to your win condition.

Do not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind. Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.

Do not communicate outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it. Mafia members may communicate at night and during the confirmation stage.

If you have a role with an action your choices are due to me by the posted deadline or as detailed in your Role PM. If I do not receive your choice via PM or bolded in the quick-topic provided by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions.

Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mod know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.

I reserve the right to make any changes to the rules at any time. My word is law.

Abusing exploits or loopholes will not be tolerated.

This is a normal game.

Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death

A simple majority of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.

Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate.

Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.

Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName or VOTE: PlayerName. Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.

Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not required, but are helpful.

You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.

This game will have 2 week deadlines. At deadline, if there is not a simple majority of votes there will be No Lynch.

I will post vote counts as often as possible, at least once a day (excluding possible holidays).

Deadlines may be extended to account for holidays or site disruption.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

Dark Blue
is my color. You're free to use other colors as you see fit, but using
Dark Blue
will count as impersonating the mod.

No hidden text or cryptography.

If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM me privately. Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.

I may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
Please bold all requests to the Mod so that they don’t get missed.

Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 72 hours of no activity or upon request after 48 hours of no activity. A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement. A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to replacement without further notice.

Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill.

If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.

If you think you may need to be replaced, notify me as soon as possible.

Remember, this is a normal setup, so there are at least 2 mafia members and one vanilla townie. Here is a sample Role PM:

Welcome!

You are a
Vanilla Townie

You have no special abilities. You win when all non-town aligned factions have been eliminated.

Please Confirm by sending me a PM saying /confirm and your Role Name.

24 hours have passed and we're one player short of the necessary 11 to start.

I'm going to PM the players who haven't responded yet and give it a few more hours before searching for replacements.

Sorry for the delay. Hopefully the game will be open and started later today.

They suck because they don't tell us anything about who you would random vote for, had you not used randomizing software. Scum would be more likely to use random.org because it allows them to avoid having to make up a reason to random vote someone, which they could see as a potential stumbling block.

it is no more obscuring than any other element bested. Please show me some finished games here where scum on day one used random.org as the reason for the vote. Your premise is faulty. My making a joke about State Farm and voting tells the same amount of information as indicating use of "random.org" Do something that is contradictory results in the opposite of what you are suggesting. Actually, anyone run a statistical analysis of day one votes and the # of times "random.org" was used and then the # of times said use was done by scum? No? If did then the premise would be demonstrate as a faulty one. I would be interesting in seeing just 1. Such a reaction has to come from somewhere. Oh, and please tell me how it is any less obscuring then a simple "hello" TIA.

Melmond's argument is technically valid but in practice you're right in that those who justify votes with random.org aren't more likely to be scum (in reality it's almost certainly a personality trait). A better argument would be that it does give less information, insofar as justifying a vote with random.org means that in all likelihood the vote was truly random, rather than "random" in the sense that, if you're scum you would have had to make a conscious decision to either vote for a scumbuddy or not vote for a scumbuddy. That, however, is an argument for it being anti-town rather than scummy. And regardless even if it is anti-town it's extremely mildly so.
