Game Rules
Spoiler: General Rules
The site-wide rules apply. Read them and then do not break them. Some of them are so important they're listed here as well, because redundancy is your friend.
The site-wide rules apply. Read them and then do not break them. Some of them are so important they're listed here as well, because redundancy is your friend.
Play to win. Most players want to win legitimately, don't ruin their enjoyment by playing against your wincon.
If you have the ability to edit or delete your posts in this thread, don't do it. If there is a problem with a post, such as incorrect formatting, ask me in the thread to fix it for you.
Do not quote anywhere any PMs between you and me (including role PMs), or quicktopics, or anything else that originated outside of the game thread. This includes PM timestamps. Paraphrasing is allowed. If in doubt, ask.
Do not use cryptography, invisible text, tiny text, or anything like that.
Do not impersonate or pretend to be the moderator. Blue is my color, don't use it or anything close to it.
Unless the moderator has specifically told you it is allowed, do not talk about this game outside of this game thread until I have announced that the game is over.
Do not bring outside factors into this game. This includes, among other things, making bets, promises of real life rewards, etc.
Do not use any form of provable randomness. Claiming you rolled dice and acting on that is fine. Using dice tags is not.
Pretending to break a rule will be treated the same as breaking the rule. It's up to my discretion whether I think you pretended to break or rule or not, so if you're not sure, ask first.
We're all here to have fun. Tempers may flare, but avoid personal attacks and keep it civil. I will have very little tolerance if someone complains about the way you're talking to them.
Breaking one of these rules may, at my discretion, result in a modkill. If you are modkilled, you will become a Neutral Survivor, and thus automatically lose. Modkilling may or may not end the game day.
I reserve the right to change the rules. Rule changes will be updated here as well as posted in thread.
If you are dead, that is it. Do not post. Not even a "Bah" post.
If I happen to not be online but you know the game is over (for example, if scum get a quicklynch in during LyLo), please let me post the final scene before revealing the ending or otherwise discussing the game.
Spoiler: Voting Rules
Votes must be bolded, and in the format of
VOTE: Player
, using either the bold or the vote tags. Abbreviations, missing punctuation, and misspellings will be accepted as long as it is obvious to me who is being voted for.
If I perceive it as a vote, it counts as a vote.
Unvoting is nice, but is not necessary.
You may vote to No Lynch, that requires the same number of votes as a lynch vote.
Once a majority of votes is reached (# of players / 2 + 1, rounded down), that person is lynched.
All living players, including the lynchee, may continue to post until I lock the thread.
If a player goes 48 real life hours without posting, I will prod them. Prods will be announced in thread. You can ask for a prod if you want but odds are I'll have beaten you to it.
If a player does not respond to their prod within 24 real life hours, or is prodded three times in total within the game, I will seek a replacement. If the player comes back before a replacement is found I may allow them to continue. I may extend the deadline if I feel not doing so might confirm someone's alignment.
If you will be V/LA, please alert me in the thread. Don't PM me, don't post in the V/LA thread, post in
this
thread. Otherwise I'll probably prod and possibly replace you.
Deadlines
Unspoilered so they're easy to reference.
Day one will have a deadline of
fourteen
real life days. Subsequent days will have a deadline of
ten
real life days.
In the event deadline is reached before a lynch has occurred, a No Lynch occurs.
Each night will have a deadline of
two
real life days. I reserve the right to end night early if I receive actions or "end night" PMs from all players before the deadline.

Ah, the public library. A delightful place to browse, read, and check out thousands of books, all for free!
I came here to borrow a book on Mafia Theory, by one Albert B. Rampage. I looked on the shelf but it wasn't there. I asked the librarian, and she said that all copies of the book were checked out over a year ago! They're incredibly overdue!
I asked if she could follow up with whoever checked it out, but she sighed. (Quietly, of course. It
is
a library.) It seems that a few months back there was a tiger attack and they ate all records of overdue books. The best she could do was determine a group of people, some of which were the ones who checked it out. And by sheer coincidence, they're all in the library right now!
YOU could be one of the ones who owes a small fortune in overdue fines. If it's not you, it's one of these 9 other people. Figure it out, so I can get a-reading!

Who was Melvil Dewey? As this game progresses, let's learn about the founder of something which is probably going to be obsolete by mid-century.
Or not. I may get bored with that.

I wonder how accurate this is. First guess is "not much" as it's doubtful Melvil Dewey, who lived from 1851 to 1931, wore hoodies.

Melvil Dewey did more than just library stuff. He was instrumental in bringing the Winter Olympics to Lake Placid in 1932 (after his death) -- the first time the Olympics were held in the U.S.

Melvil Dewey probably did not have to deal with two pages springing up suddenly while he was eating dinner.
If he did, he might have catalogued things differently. Instead, he founded a company which sold index cards. That's why catalog cards are (were?) that size.

Why is Melvil Dewey's first name spelled at it is, instead of the more common "Melville"? He had also for a while signed his last name "Dui"; why?
Born Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey, Dewey was very unhappy with American spelling rules. After creating the Dewey Decimal System, he turned his attention to reforming spelling, although with not nearly as much success. His ideas still have not been adopted, even until today.

Search for Melvil Dewey on Google, and you're likely to be surprised to see Google suggest "Melvil Dewey Would Be Ashamed". That is, unless you've played The Kingdom of Loathing. There seems to be a way to get to a library with choices that can -- well, I won't spoil it here. (Mostly because I don't understand it. But I won't tell the players that, I'll let them think I planned these things out ahead of time and did great reasearch. NOTE TO SELF: Delete that last line before submitting this post.)

Besides spelling reform, another passion of Melvil Dewey's which wasn't adopted by the United States was the Metric System.
"I ... decided that the world needed just one measure for length, one for capacity, and one for weight, and that they should all be in simple decimals like our money. I was puzzling over the names to give the new measures when I read that John A. Kasson of Iowa had passed in Congress a bill legalizing the metric system. I looked it up at once, found that it met my plan ideally and the next week went to our village lyceum and gave a talk on the great merit of international weights and measures. From that day I became a metric apostle.” -- http://independent.academia.edu/DeweyDownload

Most librarians nowadays (as far as I can tell) are women. That wasn't always the case. In 1883 Columbia College, which had separate colleges for men and women, hired Dewey to be their head librarian. He "soon persuaded the college trustees to let him open a library school as well. What Dewey neglected to tell them was that he intended to admit women, which was a problem because, at the time, Columbia College only allowed women to attend a special women's college. When word spread that Dewey was accepting women in to his school, he was swamped with applications. The trustees were furious and refused to let him use any classrooms, but Dewey carried on anyway. ... There were only 20 students, 17 of whom were women. This continued to be the trend as library work rapidly became one of the few careers that an educated woman could successfully pursue in that era" -- http://www.napavalley.edu/Library/Docum ... 0Dewey.pdf

In our last vote count, we saw how Melvil Dewey helped women attain jobs. Did that make him a good person? The site http://bitchmagazine.org/post/from-the- ... ians-women doesn't think so. It says that "a major reason Dewey wanted women to enter the field was because he felt women were ideal for the repetitiveness of library work and “didn‘t cause trouble.”" According to them and their sources, "he had sexually harassed women at ALA conferences." They conclude "Melvil Dewey does not deserve credit as any kind of advocate for women’s rights or professional advancement. And his contributions to the profession of librarianship in no way cancel out his sleaziness and sexism."
This bears further investigation into his character, don't you think? We'll explore that in our next vote count.

Several sources report that Melvil Dewey's character was -- not sterling. They report his as being, among other things, Anti-Semitic and racist.
An example of the former: When he created The Lake Placid Club, a resort in the Adirondacks, he explicitly excluded Jews from membership. "No one shall be received as a member or guest, against whom there is ... race objection." The club said it was "impracticable to make exceptions to Jews or others excluded, even when of unusual personal qualifications." Dewey was challenged over this stance and eventually resigned his positions. --
Antisemitism: a historical encyclopedia of prejudice and persecution.

Moving away from Melvil Dewey's personal life and back to his professional...
The American Library Association Catalog was created as a tool to help libraries become more diversified in the books they individually provided. Before that existed, each library would select its books based on the whims and knowledge of its director and trustees. If that group had gaps, various categories of books would be completely excluded. Dewey published an article, "The Coming Catalogue", in the Library Journal 1877. This article was the impetus for the ALA to develop its Catalog, which premiered at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.

What would Melvin Dewey have thought about the internet? He probably would have loved it; he said at one point, "A library’s function is to give the public in the quickest and cheapest way information, inspiration, and recreation. If a better way than the book can be found, we should use it."

I'll try once more for a Melvil Dewey quote.
“Reading is a mighty engine, beside which steam and electricity sink into insignificance.”
Hm, I wonder. Would I rather have books, or TV, movies, and online mafia?
I think when all is said and done, books. I guess I'm with Dewey on this one. How about you?

Much like Melvil Dewey hasn't changed sine the last vote count either. Still dead as a doorknob, unless the Zombie Apocalypse started.

Melvil Dewey died on Dec 26, 1931. Much like Kid A died just now, only Dewey won't be talking in a dead thread or playing any other games.
Tomorrow: Vote Count flavor that's not about Melvil Dewey!

The librarian returns from ousting TheIrishPope and looks around. "So", she whispers, "you think Kid A has a copy of that overdue book? Right, then, Kid A, come with me." She takes Kid A to a back room and returns moments later.
"No," she whispers sadly, "No overdue books. Just some disguise material. I sent him home."

The librarian is kind enough to allow you to sleep on various couches and plush oversize chairs. You resent being held overnight for an overdue library book, but we take library fines very seriously in this town.
Comes the morning, and you regather to discuss who has the books.
(You know how sometimes in movies logic is thrown away and the producers just hope you don't notice the huge plot hole? That's basically the reason for why the librarian didn't search you all while you were sleeping.
As to why those of you with the books brought them to the library in the first place? Because you like to stick it to the man! Yeah! So that's not a plot hole. Nope, not at all.)
Anyway, one of you didn't quite make it to the gathering...

In the Dewey Decimal classification system, books on similar subjects are grouped together by means of their call numbers.1 Contrast this with the Library of Congress classification system, which "divides all knowledge into twenty-one basic classes, each identified by a single letter of the alphabet. Most of these alphabetical classes are further divided into more specific subclasses, identified by two-letter, or occasionally three-letter, combinations."2

At the Alvin Sherman Library at Nova Southeastern University, they use the Dewey Decimal system only for their children and young adult sections. The other books use the Library of Congress system.

Several (many?) libraries have dropped the Dewey Decimal system. The first in the U.S. may have been the Perry Branch library in Arizona, or the Rangeview Library District in Colorado. They both shifted to an organizational sorting system like bookstores use. As Kathy Klager, the Sussex-Lisbon, Wisconsin Library Director said in 2012, "We don’t see people browsing the aisle labeled 332.1572 because that frankly doesn’t get us excited to read,” Klager laughed. “But when you go to a bookstore and walk in, there are big signs for business, crafts or home."

According to wikipedia, the Dewey Decimal classification for "Goodnight Moon" is [E]21. I have no idea how that translates into the numbers I've given you. Aren't I just a font of knowledge?
I tell you that about Goodnight Moon because I shall be going to sleep shortly, so bedtime books are on my mind.

Fortunately I have not seen AA9 talk about other games in this one.
I do have someone lined up to replace (the one who was going to replace Jake) and have notified him that AA9's spot is available instead. I have also notified him of the current gamestate. If he says he wants to take the spot I will give it to him.

The Librarian was not happy with all the bickering so she sent you all to the back room. Eventually, ArcAngel9 was shoved out of the room. The Librarian searched her, but didn't find the missing books. She sent AA9 on her way and gave you separate locations to sleep out the night.
