mini 1256: Marius and Sulla, Sulla is victorious!

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Mon Oct 03, 2011 7:53 am

Post by mykonian »

While under the Gracchi, the populares had already showed what they were capable of, their idealism had kept them from being really succesfull. This changed under Gaius Marius, an charismatic general and politician, who relied on the support of the people. It was this Marius who saved the republic by the marian reforms, and in that made it certain the republic could never stay. However, the struggle between this populistic politician and the established politicians would make him just as famous as his reforms. Where he relied on the plebeiers, optimates like Lucius Cornelius Sulla based their power in the senate, in the old politics.

And it wasn't that Sulla and Marius had been enemies since they were born. Sulla had served under marius in several wars, and they gained successes together. Where Marius was the general in fight against numidians and teutones, Sulla served in his staff. It was not until later that these great men in the history of Rome came to stand on opposite sides. When sulla was given the command for the first Mithridatic War, Marius tried to get via clever machinations in the senate to get control himself, and succeeded in this.

The result was that Sulla marched on Rome to revert this decision. He exiled Marius and many supporters and made sure he placed Rome in the hands of consuls he could trust. Lucius Cornelius Cinna and Gnaeus Octavius were left in control, while Sulla would face the threat of Mithridates in the east.

However, it soon became clear that Cinna had political ideas which had much in common with Marius, and when Cinna got into trouble in the senate, he made the logical alliance. Sulla wasn't that popular for being the first who marched on Rome, while Marius had done great things for the republic and was considered a hero. By force, Cinna got Marius back into Rome. When entering the city, Marius showed how ruthless a general and polician has to be. He ordered many of his political opponents to be killed and literally cut down much of the support that Sulla still had.

That left the republic in an odd situation. Marius and Cinna might be in power in Rome, but Sulla had shown he was able to do the unthinkable and use his legions to force Rome, and he was still out there. At the moment he was still occupied with Mithridates, but after that war had finished, what would happen then?

General Game Rules:

(Stolen and modified from Kloud)

Behavior:

1) This is a game. Please try to act in a respectful manner towards everyone.
2) Play to win, but also to have fun. See rule 1.
3) I might post in
blue
, so don't use it.
4) Do not quote any private communications with me or other players. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in modkill. If you have a question about whether something is acceptable, PM me.
5) You may not talk about this game outside the thread unless your role allows, whether you're dead or not.

Activity Levels and Prods:

6) I expect everyone to be active. Failure to post within a 48 hour span will result in a prod. three prods will result in me searching for your replacement.
7) Players may request a prod on another player at any time, by posting in thread by asking me in bold.
8) Not picking up a prod within 72 hours will result in replacement.

Voting, Lynches, and Deadlines:

9) Please vote in bold, such as
vote: mykonian.

10) A lynch will require the votes of a majority of players. When a majority is reached, no further votes/unvotes will be counted.
11) You may Vote: No Lynch to decide to not lynch someone on a given day. No-lynching requires 50% or more of the votes, thus on days with an even number of players it will take one less vote to No Lynch than to lynch.
12) If a majority is not reached by deadline, the person with the highest number of votes as long as it is more than one will be lynched. In the case of a tie, the first person to reach that number of votes will be lynched.
13) Posting in twilight is acceptable, for both the lynchee and town members.
14) Once your death scene is posted, you are dead. So no "bah" posts.

Miscellaneous:

15) If you fake breaking a rule, it will incur the same punishment as actually breaking the rule.
16) If you believe I have made a small mistake, for example, in a vote count, please point it out in thread. If you have a more serious grievance for some reason, PM me. Leave it out of the thread.
17) My word is final.
18) This ruleset may be incomplete. If you spot an obvious loophole, don't be a jerk - PM me and point it out. If the Mod discovers an oversight, or feels a player is doing something that, while technically within the rules, is against the spirit of the game, the Mod may add to these rules and inform/warn the players affected as appropriate.
19) This game will have 2 week deadlines.

It's basically populism vs. oligarchy.

How would you tell the difference?

(While I do agree it's pretty blatant rolefishing, it's also almost certainly unintentional.)

Asking for your reaction to a role isn't the same as rolefishing, and blunt refusal to answer = scummy.

Okay how about this: what
alignment
are you? How do you feel about it?

Well... you said she was rolefishing, but didn't comment on whether that was scummy. I'd expect town to do both.

What makes you think the rolefish was "almost certainly unintentional"?

I think it was transparently non-scummy for the same reason it was almost certainly unintentional. Unless scum is notably gutsy or inexperienced, they just don't do that sort of stuff unprovoked.
