Mafia 101 - Mafia Dodgeball


Dodgeball is not a game for wimps.

Everyone knows that; you're all determined to win - and you're all equipped with the talents you'll need to win the tournament - brains, resourcefulness, moderate physical fitness, and very formal clothing. Ah, well, the Hostess might be a bit . . . eccentric, but she's sure to make it a good time for all. You're excited-nervous, but mostly you're pumped. Waiting for the adrenaline high. At the appointed hour you head to the gymnasium doors, which swing open to let you burst into the room in what looks like a perfect rampaging mob formation. It's pitch-dark, which no one expected, and you all bang into each other: "Hey watchit - " "Ooof!" "Will you get your elbow out of my - " "Aaargh!" Then someone miraculously hits the light switch.

"AAAAAH!" Someone points to something you didn't see in the dark. There's a dead body on the floor. It's Plum in a starry blue gown and a pool of blood.

Suddenly you feel the adrenaline rush come a little sooner than you'd expected. This cannot be happening. Not at a freaking Dodgeball Tournament.

"Hey! Hey you!"

You look up.

There's a ghost.

"I am thy faaather's spirit!"

Oh, it's Plum. She seems to think this is amusing or something.

"If thou didst ever thy dear Plum love revenge her foul and most unnatural murder!"

"Cut the Hamlet, Plum, what's going on here? Who killed you?!"

"Dunno." She smiles. "But they're after blood. We might have to put the tournament on hold while we try to smoke the baddies out, waddaya say?"

Someone screams and runs for the door, but, predictably, it's locked.

Oh, well.

RulesetGame Rules use cicero rules as a base but are amended (and in some cases reversed!).

[01] VOTING METHOD: Votes must be in bold. For example: '
Vote: Plum
' is a valid vote; 'Vote: Plum' is not. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted. Please be attentive and Unvote, if applicable, before casting a new vote. This is not required, but I’d appreciate it.

1a. If I think it's a vote, it counts as one until you clarify your intentions.

[02] LYNCH: Lynching will require more than half as many votes as there are players alive (%50+); at the beginning of each day, and with every votecount, the number of votes required to achieve a lynch that day will be clearly indicated. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, any attempts to unvote will be useless, I tell you!

[03] NO LYNCH: No Lynch requires at least half as many votes as there are players alive (%50); as above, with every votecount, the number of votes required to achieve a lynch will be clearly indicated. One the requisite number of votes for No Lynch has been reached, attempts to unvote will have no effect.

[04] DEADLINE:
Twenty-five (25)
Eighteen (18) days
will be allotted for Day 1, and for every Day thereafter
eighteen (18)
fourteen (14) days
will be allotted.

4a. I will extend deadlines according to my own discretion, taking into account quantity of activity in the thread, replacements, V/LAs, and player requests.

4b. Please do not place requests for deadline extensions in the thread. PM any such requests to the Mod directly instead.

[05] DEADLINE LYNCH RULES: For a deadline lynch to occur, one more than half of the votes needed for a normal majority shall be needed for a deadline lynch (If you need 7 votes for a normal lynch, you will need 4 to lynch at deadline. However, in a situation where there are 4 or fewer players remaining, normal majority rules will still apply for deadline). In the week approaching the deadline, the number of votes needed to lynch at deadline will be clearly indicated in each votecount.

[06] RULE SIX: NIGHT ACTIONS: Night actions will be expected within 72 hours; at the end of any given Day I will clearly indicate the exact deadline. Any actions submitted after the deadline will be disregarded.

[07] LURKING AND NOT POSTING: Lurking is not an acceptable strategy in this game. Anyone who goes more than 72 hours without posting, without advance warning, will be prodded. If the prodded player does not post within 48 hours of the prod being sent, I will search for a replacement.

7a. I plan on persistence in the case of a replacement search, and will be willing to extend Day and Night length to accommodate, if need be. In the case of a
truly untenable situation
, I will consider Modkills as a solution, after consultation with the player body at large, before I consider terminating the game.

[08] OUT OF THREAD COMMUNICATION: The game is not to be discussed outside the thread unless your role specifically states that you may do so – and then only in the manner stated in your role PM, by the quicktopic indicated therein. Don’t quote any out-of-thread communications regarding this game in the thread.

8a. There will be no out-of-thread communication during any game Day. For those allowed communication, it will be permitted only before the game officially commences and during each 72-hour Night period.

8b. Talking about ongoing games is against site rules and against my rules.

8c. Any and all quicktopics will be made public after the conclusion of the game. Fair warning.

[09] BAH POSTS ARE NOT ALLOWED: Do not post after death.

9a. Twilight posting by any and all players, however, is fine.

[10] TOO CLEVER BY HALF RULE: No small or hidden text or obscure codes. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts either.

[11] VACATION? LIMITED ACCESS? If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in this game thread and/or by PM. I recommend both. All V/LAs will be announced publicly by the Mod, but both/either are acceptable as circumstances allow. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.

[12] FALLIBILITY CLAUSE: Unlike other mods I am fallible. Please point out any mistakes I make gently. In particular, if I post a vote count that does not accurately reflect your vote, it is your responsibility to correct me -- otherwise your vote may be treated as it appears in the vote count.

[13] QUESTIONS: If you have any questions at all, especially questions about whether or not you would be allowed to do something, please PM me. Please also refrain from posting any questions aside from those concerning possibly mistaken votecounts in the thread and PM me instead (in the cases of possibly mistaken votecounts, it is recommended that you PM me as well; it's just not required that you keep those questions for the Mod to PM alone).

[14] FUN: Remember, it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun. Be nice to your fellow players and your mod. I have very low tolerance for abusive posts.

[15] CHROMA RULE:
I've reserved this color for any purposes I might choose. Don't use it, please.


[16] JACKASSERY RULE: Attempting to use wordings of Mod PMs to gain an advantage in this game is not allowed.

[17] MODKILLING: I reserve the right to modkill you for breaking any of the above rules or not, as I choose. I also reserve the right to modkill you for breaking any site rules or for anything I deem deserves a modkill; I'll be reasonable, but if you think something may be questionable, please ask me by PM first. If you are modkilled, you lose automatically, even if your original win condition is eventually reached.

17a.
Never
speculate about whether the actions of a player in the game may or may not get him modkilled by me, as I prefer this have as little impact on the game as possible.
Please
PM me any concerns you have that anything going on in the game has broken a rule. Failure to abide by this rule is also a potentially modkillable offense.

[18] RULEMAKER: I reserve the right to add, remove, or amend the specific rules of this game as I see fit and to Modkill accordingly if I so choose.

[19] DAY START: After 15 Players confirm by PM the game will begin with Day 1.

20] ACTION RESOLUTION: Any and all Night Actions will be resolved via Natural Action Resolution. Any actions on the same "tier" will be resolved via timestamp - that is, the first submitted will be the first resolved.

Yes you guys do have a deadline. I believe it's the 11th of October according to the Ruleset (give or take a day because I'm too tired and lazy to properly double-check my counting). In accordance with the Ruleset, however, I will feel free to amend the deadline rule if I feel that such would benefit the game. As of now I'm considering whether to bring the deadline closer and if so by how much time.

Lynch Scene: Day 1


Dodgeballs - and accusations - fly everywhere.

But pretty soon enough of you come to the conclusion that a fellow drinking a good-looking milkshake is not just another competitor or rival - he's also a Tournament-infiltrating threat. One - two - eight of you pound him, driving him into the polished gym floor which is already starting to show a lot of scuff marks . . .

"No, ow!" he cries as one after another the red rubber dodgeballs hit him in the face.

TWANG!

That's got to smart.

"In fact it did smart," says the ghost of Plum as Milkshake falls over. You see a little blood and brains pooling out of his head, kinda like in that scene from
The Lord of the Flies
. Um, on that note, is beating people to death via Dodgeball really a good idea?

"Look, everyone!" says the ghost of Plum excitedly. Everyone's confused; then you see Milkshake's poor innocent milkshake all spilt.

Well, you've really gone and killed him.

Upon inspection it seems he's carrying in his sneaker - "Aha! A gun!" says Plum. "You know, you can only throw an interesting party by inviting in interesting people . . . ."

And you also find the well-recognized Tournament invitation. No, he's definitely not one of the people infiltrating the Tournament for cheesy laughs.

"I guess the joke's on you," says Plum. Then she hits the lights.

Out of the darkness you here her voice again: "Congrats, guys, you just lynched

Over the loudspeaker you here some music the ghost of Plum must have wired through the system. "In honor of Milkshake, a song," she says.

In the morning Plum looks very upset.

"We have another death," she says sadly, and shoos you off to find the body.

Locker rooms? Nope.

Bathrooms? Nope.

Bleachers? Nope.

Basketball hoop? SCORE.

Kmd is hanging just below the backboard, quite obviously dead. There's blood dripping from his open mouth and his cracked-open spine and you start to wonder at Plum's kinda disturbed mind. Someone gets a ladder and throws him onto the gym floor where he lies next to milkshake-dude. But is this good news? Is Kmd a threat to all Dodgeball?

There's an invitation in his pocket . . . and a plain-clothes policeman card. Crud. You never knew he had the spare time to take that correspondance course but someone - one of you - has killed

Firstly, I would have officially amended the deadline to Monday anyway due to the locked thread mishap. Secondly, deadline is going to be

Also, I'm considering a rule change which would call for an immediate step-up-contributions-substantially-immediately or get replaced ultimatum in the case of a player receiving a prod, posting something truly rudimentary (along the lines of "Hi, I was prodded"), and then lurking long enough to earn another prod.

Lynch Scene: Day 2


Now that two good guys with cool toys are dead, the stakes are much higher. And the dodging gets tougher.

MafiaSSK isn't too shabby at the game, even if he occasionally hangs back a bit. Does that mean he's a tournament-buster, though? Someone throws a ball his way, he slings it back, and pretty soon the almost random lobs are a lot more direct - specifically, directed at MafiaSSK.

The ghost of Plum calls a timeout and everyone jogs over to the bleachers, panting, and wondering if it's worth putting so much into dodgeball when sketchy characters are apt to kill you - any moment and enjoy cheesy laughs at your shameful expense.

"Wouldn't it be better to try to get them first? It's only reasonable . . ." one of you says, and you quietly glance at MafiaSSK, who is taking a seemingly innocent drink at the water fountain. A threat? A target? Someone picks up a big red ball . . .

Meanwhile the ghost of Plum is trying to arrange the mangled corpses of the innocent tournament-goers, Kmd and Milkshake, into something more honorable (it took her a while, with her ghostly limbs, to get Kmd out of the basketball hoop so you didn't have to play with the grotesque reminder of the danger over your heads). Finally, on the verge of disposing them into the plastic shrubberies in the eqipment closet, she hears a soft sound.

Gurgle


And again.

Blub


She soars over as fast as she can to find you've taken drastic action - MafiaSSK is slumped over the water fountain with ten players forcing his head into the stream with a dodgeball.

"I should have kept an eye on you! Five minute breather indeed!" she says angrily.

"We only want to protect ourselves! And it's
your
tournament that's gotten infested by ruthless killers!" you shout back and throw a ball at Plum, bloodthirsty mob that you are. It passes right through her.

She nods once and asks, "Well,
is
he a lowdown scumbag or did you kill an innocent invitee again?!"

You check . . . no gun . . . no nothing.

"Nope, wiseguys, it seems you've lynched

. Nice job. Give me two minutes to get the body out of here - does anyone else need a drink? - and then we'll resume pl-"

The lights go out. Crud.

"We're going to have to take a real break while I find the circuit breakers!" says Plum, and you all groan. "It seems that while you made all that fuss killing SSK the infiltrators shut off the electricity."

As she floats away, you shudder and hope that you'll be alive to play tomorrow.

has been lynched. Night Deadline: Get your actions in within about 72 hours if possible, but I'm going to try to find a Hayker replacement before I open the thread again.

In the morning you all rise and shine. So do the lights.

"Finally got them working again!" Plum shouts happily. She hovers over and make you all line up at the vending machine for your doses of Coke, Red Bull, cheese curls, or whatever keeps you going. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, she reminds you, especially with dodgeball and murder on your plates today. Pun intended.

Well, maybe not murders. Hopefully not murders. You can't afford any more innocents kicking the bucket, after all. It's a good thing no one's stumbled across any dead bodies yet.

Time to suit up.

"Hey!" someone calls. "Plum, you know the bodies you dumped in the shrubbery?"

"Look, did you have any better ideas? Remember, we're trapped in here and I'm a semi-corporeal ghost. What did you want me to do?"

"I mean, there were only three of them."

"Yeah. I mean, unless . . ." Everyone starts. One of you groans very loudly.

"Because there are four here," says the finder as a mob of well-trained dodgeball players stampedes him. And he's right: Next to Milkshake, Kmd, and MafiaSSK, there's the body of . . .

"The guy with the weird capitalization." Oh yeah, him. A few of you sigh. A more melodramatic (or narmy) wipes away a single tear. It's not going to be easy now.

Then one of you decides to check the body. No invitation, no I.D., nothing really. Except a little stop sign in his back pocket. Just a little

Lynch Scene: Day 3


The game has a faster pace today. You've all got enough spirit to play dodgeball today, with one threat killed last night. For the first time, the game seems really fun. Almost lighthearted. Plum whistles and cheers as the balls fly through the air and spectacular dodges are made spectacle of. You've got a feel for this.

You also still have a taste for blood. Some of you have had your eyes on her for a long time - and some of you have become quite confident that if one infiltrator could be killed, well, you could do just as well. Couldn't you?

Is it worth it to try again?

Definitely. So after the game, after high fives and fist bumps, a few of you mutter to each other and mass. Quickly, a mob of you forms and you quietly corner Snow_Bunny against the wall. She protests briefly. Voices are raised, then fists.

"Are you a threat, too?! ARE YOU?!" you shout.

"No," she murmurs hervously, "I - no -"

Then there is a ball thrown perfectly, sailing at Snow_Bunny like a guided missile. And she can't dodge this time. There is silence. Then -

FWOOOOM


And she falls back and slumps to the floor, dead. The rest of the players rush over, Plum following. Solemnly, you search her body. Nothing . . . nothing.

Then someone gets the idea to peel back Snow_Bunny's peacefully closed eyes.

You wake up with the sun, stretching happily. It'll be another good day, you think. Then you see the trail of blood leading to the supply closet.

You get a little nervous - but still, there's no reason to panic yet. Maybe it's another infiltrator who was killed in the night. Or maybe someone just had a bad nosebleed, right?

Once you're all fresh, everyone joins up and follows it. It leads deep into the supply closet, where the ghost of Plum is snoozing over the tub of spare balls she's got stashed.

"Look!" you shout, and she wakes up with a start.

"Guys, it's so early," she moans, and then notices the trail of blood. And - something you didn't see before - the
other
trail of blood. which goes, like its twin, straight up into the ball container. Someone digs through them, lobbing balls - some laced with blood - out onto the floor. When its empty, you all gather around - almost eagerly - and gaze into the bottom of the abyss. Chamber and Juls lie there, dead. You scoop them out, unsure if you're laying eyes on dead friend or foe.

Juls carries a card, which, when you read it - tearing it out of each others' hands to see for yourself - identifies her as a registered
Nurse
. And she has a proper invitation, too. Your hearts sink, and with great apprehension you turn to inspect Chambers' body. He's carrying an invitation, too. Most of you don't want to look for anything more, content to leave the disaster as it is. But on the urging of Plum, a few of you check around and notice he's wearing the key of a
Jailkeeper
round his neck.

"Well, come on. Time for dodgeball!" says Plum, trying to rouse your spirits. It's not really any use, but then you can't exactly abandon the tournament now.

And you've really got to get back at those bastards, haven't you?

Yeah, as soon as I saw the thread (now) I knew roflcopter had been hammered. The problem is - as I realize I should have mentioned by now, and I offer my sincerest apology to all - I do not have access from Friday sundown to Saturday evening EST (which is also why the opening of Day 4 was delayed past the 72-hour mark). Now you're gonna get a death scene, lovies.

Lynch Scene: Day 4


One! Two! Three! You go down like bowling pins and trot over to the bleachers to watch whoever's still on the field pummel each other. After the first few days, everyone has gotten a little faster, dodges with a bit more agility, throws the ball a little harder and faster.

But has your murder aim improved?

"I dunno," someone says in a hushed voice, looking down at the players on the gym floor below, "Who should we go after today?" The people listening shrug, but some point angrily at a dodgeballer on the floor - or a fellow spectator. But who's really more likely to be a fake - an infiltrator? How can you
know
? You can't. But, you argue, you have to do something. Roflcopter's still down there playing - you see him twist and dodge two balls thrown at him at once. And the bright dangerous spark comes into your eyes again - and he can't even gulp fearfully, because he doesn't look up from the game as you point and your whispers grow louder. He's so focused he doesn't notice most of you sneak out of the bleachers to the supply closet (where you nod sadly at the innocents and glare angrily at the treacherous fakers), nor when you come out with spare exercise weights.

Only you see the whites of his eyes as he throws the ball at his opponents and you bash in his skull.

It's pretty ugly. Kinda

, but you try not to think about it, too much. After all, he was a threat. Right? Maybe. Hopefully.

When you search the body . . . there's a syringe. And a Doctor's certificate. Your faces fall and as you start to angrily scream at each other, blaming whoever you can, Plum whistles sharply.

"Have a look," she says, "does he have a proper invitation to the tournament on him or not?"

Well. He doesn't. How strange. He must have been a

. You've caught another one of them! Your angry accusations turn to cheers, high-fives to all, even the ghostly Plum.

Just as the lights go out again. But this time, instead of despair . . . the cheers continue.

"Rise and shine, y'all!" Plum yawns as the sunrise dawns in the windows. It's a red dawn. Red for blood - but whose?

Uneasy despite your recent victories, you get ready to play and notice something's off. Not the fact that there's probably a fresh corpse or two and definitely still some lurking threats. No, it's much more . . . elemental.

It's
quieter
than before. You start some warm-up exercises, but the loud bouncing of balls doesn't quite cover the fact that one - no, two - loud voices are missing from your little mob. But has disaster struck, like last night, or has some more vile villain succumbed? You hesitate, try not to notice who's here and who isn't, and notice, with a shudder, quite how small your group is growing. The tournament is winnowing away the weaker players, it seems.

Eventually you push through your denial and gather to follow the sound of the silence. In the hush you almost fancy you can tell foe from friend - but no, the truth it just as murky as before. But you do find, high up in the bleachers, two bodies wrapped almost reverently. You know who they are.

"Vi," you whisper, "and Rayfrost." Some voices are sorrowful but some are warily hopeful or vengeful. But when you check, they wear only shrouds, with their proper tournament invitations tucked into the folds of linen. Both appear to have been
Vanilla Townies
.

Plum, the ghost, bows her head in her hands and shudders. The ghosts of the players - her invited guests - seem to be taking a toll on her, too. She doesn't even know where there spirits are, only that they're not hanging out here, where the tournament must go on.

"Sorry guys," Plum says when she regains her composure. "Go play, everyone. And do me a favor and get the jerks who keep doing this; get 'em good."

You awaken to the copper-iron tang of blood on the air. It's splattered all over the floor. Well. This is something new. Relatively speaking.

The funny part is that the bodies aren't where the blood is. The ghost of Plum is sitting in the middle of the puddle of it, reading something. You practically stampede her, boiling with questions.

"I dragged the bodies away earlier. I thought it was more respectful," she says when you come at her demanding what's happened. "They're in the equipment closet with the rest of them."

So they are.
Imaginality
and
Dry-fit
lie there almost peacefully, surrounded by mountains of tennis balls, which bounce everywhere as you undo Plum's work, tearing at it all to try to find evidence of guilt - or innocence. But after you're pulled away by some of the others, still raging and grieving blindly, there are two tournament invitations, a pair of binoculars belonging to Dry-fit and Imaginality still in his protective stance. And some pages. Plum floats up behind. "Well," she says tearfully, "you're all going to have to go out and play today. And hold on." She snatches the papers from one of you and starts to browse. When she looks up, she smiles sadly. "At least Imaginality made it to the end of NaNoWriMo," she says sadly.

She begins to read, muttering something about a rabbit while you head out to the gym floor, wishing your plight were merely fiction.

Lynch Scene: Day 6


You're all tired. Worn out. Exhausted. Falling asleep during the timeout periods . . . just about. Your eyelids may droop, but something makes you keep them open even when you can't anymore. Fear.

Too many have died to sleep, but too many have died to stay awake. But maybe - maybe someone can figure out who did it - not just a stab in the dark? Maybe not. The mob psychology is stating to scare you. It's killed a bunch of your comrades, just like the mysterious killers. One finger points. Pretty soon four do.

Four balls are thrown his way. Not too hard, but he knows what it means. And he looks sick of the whole business. He just shakes his head a little, angrily. So you come forward and some of you crowd around him. He doesn't move. Reach out and start to strangle him, and he just sneers. He's had it.

But infiltrators can lose it, too, right? You go back to the dodgeball field and play another two rounds, the fastest and fiercest yet to try to get it out of your head because you don't want to look. Somewhere cheesy laughs may be had at the expense of your dispair, but you can't bear the thought of failure again.

"HEY!" Plum shouts. "You killed another one!"

"Well, was he for us or against us?!" The lights go out and you gasp, but Plum answers:

"No, Alvinz95 was a
Vanilla Townie
This is awful."

Somewhere you can here laughter . . .

So few of you have made it deep into the tournament. So few of you have survived. You don't live for Dodgeball now; you do it by reflex but live in the hope of vengeance against the infiltrators. Justice must prevail.

It's harder than usual to make it out onto the gym floor to play not because you don't want to play, but because there's one dead body laid perfectly dead center. Arms folded over his chest and eyes gently closed and absolutely not breathing. Each hand holds a piece of paper. One is a Doctor's certificate. The other is a note which is defnitely not an invitation from Plum.

"My comrades . . ." it begins, as you bend over it eagerly. Might it contain some sort of clue? You scan it hopefully, but it's nothing but mantras of evil and cheesy humor which turns your stomach. You don't laugh, not even when you get to the lines " . . . and the premise is that they're trapped in a gymnasium and have to play dodgeball. But SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST WON'T HELP THEM NOW MUAHAHAHAHAHA."

That's five of you left - and how many threats? "The tournament is nearing its epic conclusion!" Plum says over the loudspeakers, and it sends a shiver of fear down your spines. Someone has to win the game of death, and whether you're living to get out or just for vengeance and vindication in a world gone blood-red - you can picture yourself dead on the floor, with lifeless eyes staring up as the infiltrators laugh.

And you know that at least one of you can picture himself laughing over your dead bodies in triumph.

One.
Two.
Three.

Fingers point. The murder has become formal now. Ritualized. You almost gently take him by the collar and the hair and coax him up onto the highest row on the bleachers. Suddenly he struggles, writhing, even though he isn't in agony yet. But your strength outmasters his. He screams and pleads and looks you in the eye, a gaze you can't match (how many innocents have died by your own hands? And if you're wrong, have you just betrayed your last chance?). And finally as he looks down and sees the world as a never-ending Möbius loop before him he takes a breath and laughs in terror and pain and joy. You smile the only smile left, the one right between Despair and Delirium. And let him fall.

Having considered the possibility of a Happily-Ever-After ending, here is my stance for this game: If two full cycles of No-Lynch - No Kill (in that order) are achieved, I will declare a draw between all parties with a theoretically achievable win condition. A draw is not a win; neither is it a loss.

You are guaranteed one full cycle after I let you know. That's this. At this point, you have completed one cycle. If another one is achieved, I will declare a draw.

Lynch Scene: Day 9


Four left, and dodgeball isn't as much of a challenge. It's catch. You throw the ball around in a circle and your thoughts go round and round. You seriously consider not doing anything. Going to sleep without killing, just like last night, when no one died. How miraculous, just to wake up and not find the gymnasium spattered with blood and gore - what right do you have to dirty it up yourselves, if you've been given so precious a gift.

But the bloodlust hasn't died down. Not quite. The game of catch gets faster, more intense. You want revenge, want to beat the infiltrators - the killers - at their own game. Dodgeball. Death. It's all the same by now.

Endgame . . .

He goes quietly. Almost too quietly. His eyes are still open when he stops breathing and you carefully remove your hands from around his neck and he slsps forward. He is smiling slightly, which makes you shiver violently and wish that it was all over. Surely now you've got at least that. An end to the madness.

And a
gun
slips to the floor. And a single bullet casing. And you scream a half-wild shout of triumph and maybe joy. And hug, and cheer, and Plum beams, because you've done it after all. The three of you, the perfect heroes -

in the dark.

"WHAT?"

You remember the smile on Manho's face and cry out in shock. Or terror.

"Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf . . .?"

The world spins and chaos breaks like a waterfall of fire into the abyss and the madness grabs you again. Another night. And then . . . the final showdown. For real, this time. Not endgame.

No-Lynch/No-Kill cycles makes a draw. If you No-Lynched today and there was No Kill the next night, you would have one more cycle before I declared a draw. You have to do two in a row. You right now have zero in a row. I'm saying this as many ways as I can so it's nice and clear.

Lynch Scene: Day 10


"How can there possibly be any more infiltrators left?" One of you asks.

The second says, "No one has been killed in a while."

"And who wins the Dodgeball tournament!?"

Plum watches and frowns. She is running extremely low on flavor-writing steam, and this is going to be a crapshoot one way or another. "Well, she says, floating gently down, "you can take your time, I guess . . ." She gestures to the corpses. She's lined them up on the bleachers and dressed them up with bowties made of tissues. The jury of the dead peers looks on. "Or we can play another round of dodgeball. While you decide."

The smiles are back, the real smiles; you've gone through insanity and come out the other end and it's
sunny
and there are red balls being flung around and flair and grace dodging, dodging, playing.

In the end, it's just a game after all.

So when one of you trips, it's nothing to worry about. It's teleology. It has a purpose; it's the way things are meant to be . . .

and you're so utterly unsurprised by the dead red eyes staring up at you, darker and bloodier than all the stares you've seen before that it's only natural to close the corpse's eyes so it looks just about at peace and continue playing.

One on one. Toss the ball around.

"Hey," says the first one casually, "you're all right. Right?"

"And you're you. Aren't you?"

And just like that the light brighten and the corpses start to twitch and open their eyes. And smile right back.

As everyone runs out to the gym floor gleefully, as the game of dodgeball starts up again, as the lights go on full power . . . even the infiltrators, now defeated, wake up from death and creakily join in. And even though the joke's on them, they're laughing just as hard as the rest of you.

"I declare the
Town
to be the winner of the Dodgeball Tournament, and we'll restart a proper one now. Because this is a happy ending in a zombie apocalypse and it is going to be EPIC."

First you get what I sent to EmpTyger and worked out/clarified to him, give or take a question or two (and note that I might have cleaned up inconsistent wording with no change in meaning when I sent them out or not; I can't recall and it makes little difference save aesthetics):

- Reflexive Cop gets a result of 'Town-aligned' or 'Not Town-aligned' on anyone who successfully targets him that night. So if Player X is the Townie Tracker and Tracks the Reflexive Cop Night 1, that night the Cop will get a PM from the Mod stating 'Player X is innocent'. The Cop only gets a result on the first two players to (successfully, i.e. not stopped at the source by a blocking action, though a kill stopped at the target by a protect-type action is considered, in this respect, 'successful') target him per night. If more than two players target him he gets no results at all, and he does get duplicates on subsequent nights. Since it's a reflexive action, not an active one, a roleblock or jailkeeping will have no effect but to give the Cop a result on that player. Furthermore, if a kill action is performed on the Cop but the kill is prevented by a Doctor, bodyguard, or jailkeeper protect (not JK roleblock) the action does go through and the Cop gets results on the would-be killer and the protector.

- The Double-Kill Serial Killer has two kill actions every night. These can be used separately or both on a single player.

Those are my one-or-two new role variants roles. I am under the impression that they are not inappropriate in a Normal setup, considering that the other roles are all "standard".

Other notes:

- The Mafia team has no kills besides the Mafia One-Shot Vigilante.

- Roleblocking actions block only the first active action made by the blocked Player.

- The Nurse activates as soon as any Doctor dies; in this case, as soon as either Mafia Doctor dies.

- The Godfather appears 'Town-aligned' to any Cop-type investigation (but because he has no active actions this will never come into play).

What happens if the roleblocker and the jailkeeper target each other?


Whichever action was submitted first is resolved first. Assuming the RB was targeted by a killing action, if his roleblock on the JK was submitted first, the JK is blocked and the RB dies; if the JK's action was submitted first, the RB is blocked and the JK's action, having gone through, protects the RB from that kill.

What results does the tracker get if they and the roleblocker target the same player?


Any actions attempted by that hypothetical Player X are 'stopped at the source' and the Tracker gets no results, as no action reached the Player X whom the Tracker targeted. If, however, the Tracker tracks the Vigilante, who attempts a kill which is stopped by, say, a Mafia Doc, the action is considered 'stopped at the destination' in which case the Tracker gets results that Vig-guy targeted whoever he did target originally.

What determines what the "first active action" is?


In the case of anyone being able to perform more than one 'active action', the one submitted first is considered to be 'the first'. This will be clear in the Role PM. In the case of this game, only the SK will ever perform more than one 'active action' per Night ever. The Reflexive Cop, as his action is a passive/reflexive quality of his role rather than an active target of another player, will never perform an active action.

What happens if the bodyguard and a doctor target the same player?


The Doc-type protections will always resolve before the Bodyguard's actions, so if they both target a player targeted with a kill, the Doctor protection will protect that Player and the Bodyguard's protect-die action will not be triggered, leaving all three alive in the morning barring other circumstances (I'm under the impression that I'm following my best understanding of Natural Action Resolution here, but in any case the complete table of action resolution for the game I plan to be as follows:

1. Blocking actions in order received (including Jailkeeping, even though it also protects)
2. Protecting actions EXCEPT BODYGUARD
3. Bodyguard actions
4. Kills
5. Tracking
6. Reflexive Cop).

All right, time to ramble on how this godforsaken setup came into existence. In truth, it stemmed from a few musings about Large Normals, but mostly I think it came from my affinity for reflexive roles and my desire to use a reflexive-type Cop. And oh, the irony that that was the first Night Kill.

Anyway, in camp last summer I was sitting in the camp zoo, in the little indoor cabin/house/whatever (a smallish but well-managed and bold little zoo it was; I was one of five keepers of the place) and scrawed out a setup idea. I was rather fond of it and at first glance it seemed both semi-balanced an rather subversive. I forgot about it, but a friend gave it to me after I'd left it lying around the zoo and I kept it. It had the multiple targeting roles which were needed to make a Reflexive Cop useful in the first place (mostly protective roles), it had the multiple kills per Night needed to make that both workable and interesting, and it had the subversion of those kills coming from a Double-Kill Serial Killer and a Vig, with a Largish Mafia without a kill.

Some refining was needed, with the help of Mirth and SpyreX, and it happened. That's when the Mafia One-Shot Vig was added, as a balancing factor in case the SK was caught early. A Tracker was added (I'll see if I can look in my old PMs to find out what prompted that or whether it was there in the first place and why), and I took out a second Jailkeeper before I sent it out for review. And that was mostly it, give or take edits I can't remember (oh yes, and all Roleblocks were made to pnly block the first action performed by the player in question).

Or so I thought. The Town managed to lynch its CLAIMED VIGILANTE, definitely a move I didn't anticipate (and I'm shocked as heck that Tubby's playerslot made it all the way to the end of the game after that). That was one kill missing. Then the SK chose
not to kill at all
and the Mafia team, feeling threatened or such, after looking like they'd fall into the trap of RBing the Cop (totally fatal, and the reason I considered the RB to be a detriment rather than a real bonus to the team when I put it in) used their kill on him then. I really thought they'd save it . . .

And Day 2 didn't go that much better, though you managed not to lynch a claimed powerrole. Luckily the SK started to kill, and targeted two scumbags . . . one of whom was protected. Okay, it wasn't going totally down the tubes. But I don't think DN-now-Tate was under any suspicion at the time, and the longer he lived the more dangerous he'd become.

Day 3 the scumteam started to slip, especially, as I recall, thanks to Vi. This was pretty epic play; Vi was correctly guessing a good chunk of the scumteam. Another lynch of scum and it was looking all grand until two of the precious few remaining powerroles were both killed before they even really affected anything.

But scumhunting was still going pretty well, with Rofl falling to a rallying town and followed by the death of Vi (finally, though she really wasn't an immediate danger to scum) and Rayfrost.

And this is where, if I'm correct, Malp claimed Doc and stuff happened. Namely, Imaginality asked me a question about his role:

I admitted and admit now that the Bodyguard Role PM was flawed as explained in (1.) above and that it didn't specify that the Bodyguard could only protect against one kill, as was noted in the other protective Role PMs and was my intention. As you can see, I was quite clear to Imaginality what the parameters of his role were and he was clear on it.

However . . . stuff happened. As you saw, Imaginality's plan was not effective, and, in fact, was based on role parameters different than the ones I explained to Imaginality. Sajin mentioned this point in particular to me when we discussed constructive criticism of my Modding in this game (which he offered multiple times and we gratefully accepted at every opportunity. I welcome stuff like that and it's always a pleasure to Mod for players active and interested in the game). To clarify,

You can lie about this sort of stuff. If people ask me, of course, I'd have to speak truthfully, but there's no reason for me to prevent you from choosing this course.
As you can see, Imaginality's fears came to pass pretty badly, with both remaining Town PRs dying at the hands of the doomed plan . . . and Malp the Doc-claiming scumbag wasn't even lynched for the trouble! Moral of the story is that taking risks can end up hurting you, and that lying as Town can be bad in ways other than ending up lynched.

And then Alvinz was lynched. He didn't know that the only ones on his wagon were scumbags. Until he self-hammered (something I will not choose to punish in this case. If you have an argument for punishing this, or CSL's selfhammer, I'm all ears).

Both of the SK's kills were on dramonic that night, bringing it down to 2:2:1. How could Town possibly make it now?

Well, a combination of things. First, the scum realized, through comparison with their own actions the Night that Imaginality and Dry-fir died, that DN/Tate had to be lying about his role and thus be the Double-Kill SK, and prosecuted their main threat accordingly; resulting in his death (which is another reason I didn't Modkill Tate immediately; and in the end his death meant his loss either way).

Now we went into a very interesting situation. 2:2, but because of the Mafia's lack of kill and the wording and intent of their win-condition ("You win when only members of the Mafia are alive or nothing can prevent the same") they didn't win then. In theory, if the Townrealized what was going down and continuously forced a no-Lynch, the Mafia would be prevented, fair and square, from being the only players left alive, as they had no means to kill.

After the first no-Lynch and No Kill, I did consult with SpyreX (with whom I also consulted on Mod-punishment decisions and other things; I owe him many thanks and you can all salute him, too) on when a draw would be reached due to no-Lynch + No Kill cycles (Happily Ever After ending). And amazingly (sort of), the Town stood
very
firm in the face of something they thought was a single-player threat. Nerves of steel and extremely competent play on the parts of Sajin and Tajo really sealed the win (or at least lack of loss) for the Town and definitely earned it. In my book.

I myself didn't realize that the rules were such that even a mislynch in three-player LYLO meant a draw, not a Mafia win, but that was what was indicated. Was that fair? I think so. The Mafia started out with 6 players out of 20 and two protective roles, plus a Roleblocker and a one-shot Vig (the Godfather, who couldn't target anyone, which was the only way to be investigated by the Reflexive Cop, was a total red herring).

In conclusion, WTH. That was what this setup did to you and that was what you did to this setup did to me.
