Marketplace Mafia II - Game Over

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Fri Oct 26, 2012 6:41 am

Post by Magua »

It was many months ago that the incubation experiment known as Mini 1198 ended with a crazed psychopath taking control of all the resources and enacting his own personal Communist utopia.

Of course, being all alone because he'd killed everyone else, it was somewhat trivial to alert the police to his presence. A S.W.A.T. team later and he was no longer a threat, but the cost in resources had been atrociously high.

But that was months ago. Months, in the hyper world of fast paced business? May as well have been decades. And how quickly people are to forget the past when there's money on the line! Other buildings with other venture capitalists hosting their own incubators. So much money on the line. So. Much. Money. It was, of course, only a matter of time before another group would find that some of its members were preferring murder to innovation...

I. Rules

- The Golden Rules
1. The site-wide rules apply. Read them, know them, love them, but do not break them.
2. Play to win.
3. I reserve the right to change the rules at any time for any reason. If I do this, the rule changes will be posted in thread.

- The Inviolable Rules
4. If you’re unsure if what you’re going to do will break a rule, ASK.
5. We're all here to have fun. Tempers may flare, but avoid personal attacks and keep it civil.
6. Do not edit or delete your posts in this thread.
7. Do not quote or link private communications, including Role PMs, Quicktopics, etc. (Quoting is allowed wherever alignment is confirmed, such as scum or mason QTs.)
8. Do not use cryptography, invisible text, tiny text, or the like.
9. Do not use any form of provable randomness. Claiming you rolled dice and acting on that is fine. Using dice tags is not.
10. Do not impersonate or pretend to be the moderator.
If I edit a post, my words will be in purple.
Do not use this color.
11. Do not talk about this game outside of this game thread until it is completed, unless I have specifically told you it is allowed.
12. Do not bring outside factors into this game. This includes making bets, promises of real life rewards, etc.
13. Do not pretend to break one of these rules. Pretending to break a rule will be treated the same as breaking the rule.
14. Breaking one of these rules may result in a modkill. If you are modkilled, you may become a Neutral Survivor, and thus automatically lose. Modkilling may or may not end the Day.

- The Activity Rules
15. Each player is expected to post at least once every 72 real life hours. If a player goes 72 real life hours without posting, they may be prodded. Prods will be publicly announced.
16. If a player does not respond to their prod within 24 real life hours, is prodded twice in the same Day, or three times in total within the game, they may be force-replaced.
17. If you will be V/LA, please alert me in the thread or via PM. I do not read the V/LA thread.
18. Each Day will have a deadline of fourteen real life days.
In the event deadline is reached before a lynch has occurred, no lynch will occur.

19. Each Night will have a deadline of three real life days. If a player has a night action, but does not submit a choice before deadline, they will perform no action.
20. I may extend deadlines in the event replacements must be found, at my discretion. This will be announced.

- The Voting Rules
21. Votes must be bolded to count, and in the format of VOTE: Magua. Abbreviations, missing punctuation, and misspellings will be accepted as long as the vote is bolded and it is obvious to me who is being voted for.
22. Unvoting is nice, but is not necessary.
23. Once a majority of votes is reached (# of players / 2 + 1, rounded down), that player will be lynched and dead as of the next vote count. No further votes or unvotes will be counted.
24.
If you are dead, that is it. Do not post. Not even a "Bah" post.

25. You may VOTE: No Lynch. It still requires a majority to end the Day before deadline.

II. Setup Rules and Information

1. This game is Night start.
2. Entrepreneur Role PM: At least one player will have received this Role PM:
Spoiler: Entrepreneur Role PM
Hello, XXX!

You clawed your way into this marketplace, and you’ve made a success of yourself, creating your own niche and your own wealth. But in the recent days, your fellow entrepreneurs have been winding up dead -- it’s up to you to show that innovation trumps murder.

You are an
Entrepreneur
.

Nest Egg:
You start the game with $100.
Wage:
At the end of every Day, you will receive $50.
Efficiency Bonus:
At the end of every Day, you will receive $5 for every full 24 hours that remained until deadline (since deadline is 14 real life days, this bonus will be between $65 and $0).
Money (P):
Each Night, you may spend any or all of your money on the following activities:
  • Bid:
Bid on abilities being auctioned off in the marketplace. Described in Section III.
  • Invest:
The following Night, you will receive 120% (round down) of what you invested.
  • Transfer:
Choose another player. The following Night, that player will (anonymously) receive 95% (round down) of what you transferred.
  • Advertise:
Influence what abilities will be auctioned off in the marketplace the following Night. Described in Section IV.

You win with the
Town
: You win when all the players alive have the
Town
win condition, and there is at least one player alive.

3. Money: Each player starts with a set amount of money (their Nest Egg). Additionally, at the end of every Day, each player will receive an amount of money as described in their Role PM.
Spoiler: Money Example
Magua is an Entrepreneur. His Nest Egg is $100. His Wage is $50, with an Efficiency Bonus of $5 per 24 hours remaining when the Day ended. If Day 1 lasts...
  1. 5 hours: Magua will receive $115 at the end of Day 1, and have $215 total.
  2. 204 hours (8 days, 12 hours): Magua will receive $75 at the end of Day 1, and have $175 total.
  3. 336 hours (14 days -- deadline): Magua will receive $50 at the end of Day 1, and have $150 total.

4. Limited Reveal: When a player dies, their role and alignment will be revealed, but whatever money and abilities they possessed when they died will not be.
5. Timing: When it comes to precise issues of timing, apply these rules:
  1. The lynch occurs before “end of Day” effects. The lynchee is not considered alive for any such effects.
  2. At Night, auctions are ended and all transfers, investments, etc are processed before abilities. Specifically, killing someone at Night does not stop them from winning an auction or performing a transfer.

6. Mafia Knowledge: The following things are true about the mafia in this setup:
  1. No member of the mafia gets an Efficiency Bonus; they receive the same amount of money regardless of the length of the Day.
  2. The mafia do not possess a factional Night-kill. The only Night-kill available will be via the marketplace.
  3. The mafia have daytalk.
  4. There are two mafia teams. Each team does not know the other team; however, they win together.
  5. The mafia have a method to share abilities.

III. Auctions

1. Each Night, the marketplace will contain a number of auctions related to the number of players. One of these auctions will always be for “Night-kill x 1”, which is a one-shot Night-kill.
2. The abilities that appear each Night in the marketplace are in a predetermined order.
3. The current bid and ending bid for an ability are public; the highest bidder (and the winner) are anonymous. Current bids will be updated roughly every 24 hours during the Night.
4. The rules for bidding are as so:
  1. A player may PM the mod the *maximum* amount they wish to bid on an auction at any time while that auction is ongoing. This is the their “maximum bid”.
  2. All bids must be in whole dollars. No fractions or decimals. A player may not bid more money than they have.
  3. Maximum bids function like eBay -- the current bid will always be $1 more than the second highest bid, or, to put it another way, if you are winning the auction, you are always bidding the minimum amount required to do so. If another player bids higher than the current bid, but less than or equal to your maximum bid, you will remain the highest bidder and the current bid will be raised appropriately.
  4. The maximum bid mechanic is to make things easier for the moderator. A player may voluntarily choose to pay more than the minimum amount if they so desire.
  5. All bids between status updates are given equal timing priority. In the case of tied maximum bids, the person who was previously winning will continue to win if possible. Otherwise, random.org will provide a tiebreaker.
  6. Maximum bids may be increased at any time, but may never be decreased.
  7. At the end of the Night, before kills resolve, the highest bidder receives any unused bid money back, and receives the ability in question. All other bidders receive 90% (round down) of their bid money back.

Spoiler: Bidding Example
1. The ability "Cop x 2" is in the marketplace. It has a starting bid of $10, but no current bid as of yet.
2. Magua has $100. He sends a PM that includes “Bid: Cop x 2, $50”. This costs Magua $50. Magua is now the highest bidder for "Cop x 2", with a current bid of $10 (the minimum amount required to win). He has $50 remaining.
3. Faraday has $100. He sends a PM that includes “Bid: Cop x 2, $40.” This costs Faraday $40. Magua remains the highest bidder, with a current bid of $41. Faraday has $60; he will not receive any money back until the end of the Night. Magua still has $50.
4. Faraday sends a PM that includes “Bid: Cop x 2, $65.” This costs Faraday another $25. Faraday is now the highest bidder, with a current bid of $51, and has $35.
5. If the auction were to end at this point, Faraday would receive $14 (his $65 maximum bid - the $51 winning bid) and receive Cop x 2, ending up with $49. Magua would receive $45 back (90% of $50), ending up with $95.
6. If, however, Magua were to come back and place a new maximum bid of $80, that would cost Magua $30. If the auction then ended, Magua would win for $66; he would receive $14 back ($80 - $66) and have $34. Faraday would end with $93 (90% of $65 is $58, plus the unspent $35).

IV. Advertising

1. Advertising allows players to pay money to start another auction for a specific ability.
2. Each Night, players may spend money along in the name of a specific ability that has come up for auction already.
3. The name of the ability that currently has the most money spent on it will be public (but not the amount of money). In the event of a tie, the ability that reached that amount first will be “the winner”.
4. The following Night, an auction for that ability will be held. Once an ability has won an Advertising auction, it cannot be advertised for the rest of the game.
5. Money spent on Advertising for an ability that did not win carries over to the next Night.
Spoiler: Advertising Example
1. It is N0. No one has spent any money advertising any ability.
2. Magua sends a PMs that include “Advertise: Cop, $10.” This costs him $10. The leading Advertising candidate is now “Cop”, and this will be reflected in the auction counts.
3. Faraday sends a PM that includes “Advertise: Neighborizer, $20.” This costs him $20. The leading Advertising candidate is now “Neighborizer”, and this will be reflected in the auction counts.
4. Magua sends in another PM that includes “Advertise: Cop, $10”. This costs him another $10. Neighborizer is still the leading candidate, because it reached $20 first.
5. The Night ends with Neighborizer winning. The following Night, there will be a Neighborizer auction.
6. The following Night, the leading Advertising candidate will start out being “Cop,” because the $20 of donations from N0 will have carried over.

V. Abilities

1. Abilities are the powers that can be won from the auctions in the marketplace.
2. All abilities have a limited number of uses (even abilities that are normally considered passive, such as “Investigation Immunity”, must be activated to gain their benefit). The number of uses remaining comes after the name. Eg, “Cop x 2” is a two-shot Cop; each use returns one investigation, “Night-kill x 1” is a one-shot Night-kill, and so on.
3. Abilities may only be activated once per phase (Day or Night), even if you have multiple uses of that ability. However, you may activate as many *different* abilities per phase as you desire.
4. Unless otherwise specified, an ability lasts for the length of the phase (Day or Night) on which its activated. Eg, an activation of “Investigation Immunity” is good for the entirety of the Night on which it is activated, and the extra vote from “Extra Vote” lasts for the entire Day on which it is activated.
5. Each ability is put into one of the following categories:
  1. Day:
This ability is activated during the Day. It cannot be roleblocked, and will not show up on tracker and watcher reports. Many Day abilities will trigger an in-thread announcement; if so, the activator of that ability is always anonymous.
  2. Targeted:
This ability is activated at Night, and targets a specific player. This ability can be roleblocked, and it will show up on tracker and watcher reports. Targeted abilities may not be used on yourself.
  3. Personal:
This ability is activated at Night, and does *not* target a player. It cannot be roleblocked, and will not show up on tracker and watcher reports.

6. Ability Glossary: The effects and rules for each ability are known and are public. When an ability appears in an auction for the first time, its effect and any associated rules will be listed on that auction, as well as the glossary at the end of this section. Where the rules of an ability contradict other rules, the ability rules take precedence.

Spoiler: ”Ability Glossary”
Accountant (Targeted):
Choose another player. You will learn how much money this player possessed at the end of this Night.

Auction Detective (Targeted):
Choose another player and a specific auction from the current Night. You will learn whether or not that player won that auction.

Blind Bid (Day):
The following Night after this is used, only you will be able to see the current bid for auctions that occur. To everyone else, it will be hidden. This will not be announced in-thread until Night starts.

Bulletproof (Personal):
You are protected from a single
Night-kill
targeting you this Night.

Cop (Targeted):
Choose another player. You will receive back a report of "Mafia" or "Not Mafia".

Deadline (Day):
The deadline for the current Day will be set to 72 hours from the activation of this ability. Alternatively, activating
Deadline
can cancel an activation of
Wage Freeze
; if this occurs, the deadline is not changed.

Doctor (Targeted):
Choose another player. That player will be protected against a single
Night-kill
that targets them this Night.

Extra Vote (Day):
This ability may only be activated while there are more than ten living players. You gain control of an extra vote, which will appear on the vote counts as '???'. This vote may be controlled by PM'ing the mod. This will be announced in-thread. The lynch threshold may go up as a result of activation of this power. This extra vote is not affected by any voting restrictions upon you.

Federal Reserve Chairman (Day):
Every living player (including yourself) immediately gains $200. This will be announced in-thread.

Gift Card (Targeted):
Choose another player. That player will gain $50 (this will appear to them identically as if it was transferred).

Governor (Day):
Choose another player. That player cannot be lynched for the remainder of this Day. This will be announced in-thread. This cannot be used after someone has already been lynched.

Hitman (Personal):
If you activate
Night-kill
in the same Night you activate
Hitman
,
Night-kill
will ignore one ability that would stop the kill from working (ie, ignore one roleblock or protection).
Bodyguard
will be ignored only if it is the only ability that would interfere with the kill.

Investigation Immunity (Personal):
You appear as "Not Mafia" on
Cop
reports, regardless of your actual alignment.

Last Will (Personal):
Choose another player. If you die during this Night, or during the following Day, and that player is still alive, that player will receive all of your money and remaining abilities. The recipient of this transfer, but not its contents, will be announced publicly in-thread.

Love Potion (Targeted):
Choose another player. That player will not be allowed to vote for a player of your choice (which may be you) during the next Day, chosen when you activate this power. This will be announced in-thread the first time your targeted player attempts to vote for the chosen player. This will not affect the lynch threshhold.

Market Watcher (Personal):
You will be told how much money currently exists in the game as of the end of the Night, after all auctions have completed and actions have resolved. Money that is being transferred or invested will not appear in this total.

Medium (Targeted):
Choose another player. If that player dies during this Night or is lynched the following Day, a Ghost Quicktopic will be provided that either of you may talk in at any time until the end of the phase following their death, at which time it will be closed. The dead player will not be given the results of any of their abilities for the Night they died, and they will not be given access to the Dead Quicktopic until the Ghost Quicktopic has closed.

Messenger (Day):
Choose another player. You may give the mod a message of up to 500 characters that the mod will pass along (anonymously) to your target.

Neighborizer (Targeted):
Choose another player. At the start of the next Day, a Neighbor Quicktopic will be provided that either of you may talk in at any time while alive. If you use this ability a subsequent time, you may choose to add the new player to an existing Neighbor Quicktopic (this will work even if you die that Night), or create a new, separate one.

Night-kill (Targeted):
Choose another player. That player will die. If you are a Mafia member and you target another Mafia member, this kill will fail unless you specifically choose otherwise.

Ninja (Personal):
You may choose which of your visits (if any) will appear on
Tracker
or
Watcher
reports and which will not.

Oracle (Day):
You will receive a PM from the mod showing the items that will be auctioned off during the next Night.

Peace Treaty (Targeted):
This ability cannot be roleblocked. You are treated as targeting every other player. You will perform a roleblock on all
Night-kill
activations that target anyone *except for you*. However, any
Night-kill
that targets *you* will work regardless of any other abilities (that is, you cannot be protected and Night-kills on you cannot be roleblocked).

Roleblocker (Targeted):
Choose another player. All of their Targeted abilities that they activated for that night, except for
Roleblocker
, will fail. Personal abilities will continue to work. Abilities that were not activated are not affected. If the Targeted ability would return a result, it will instead return "Ability failed".

Tailor (Targeted):
Choose another player. Name an investigative ability and a result: if that ability is used on that player this Night, it will return your specified result instead of the real one -- the mod will perform all necessary formatting.

Tracker (Targeted):
Choose another player. You will be informed which players (if any) that player visited during the Night, but not the nature of each visit. A roleblocked ability activation is not considered a visit.

Vote Freezer (Day):
Choose another player who is voting, but is not voting for No Lynch. Their vote is now frozen and cannot be changed for the rest of the Day. This will be announced in-thread. This will not affect the lynch threshhold.

Vote Nullifier (Targeted):
Choose another player. That player will not have a vote the following Day. This will be announced in-thread. The lynch threshold may go down as a result of activation of this power.

Wage Freeze (Day):
Efficiency Bonuses for this Day will be calculated based on how much time was remaining when this ability was used, rather than when the Day actually ends. This will be announced in-thread.

Watcher (Targeted):
Choose another player. You will be informed which players (if any) visited that player during the Night, but not the nature of each visit. A roleblocked ability activation is not considered a visit.

It had all started innocently enough. Just a few days ago, I had trudged into work to find everyone looking extremely excited -- near manic.

"New foosball table?" I hazarded as a guess, but was quickly shushed. Everyone was gathered around a phone in the conference room, and on it I could hear Mr. Moneybags on the speakerphone. Everyone was glued to what he was saying.

"...ward innovation, the individual with the highest net revenue of the group will receive funding to the tune of one kajillion dollars."

There was an audible gasp of excitement. Excited smiles. Whispers.

The call was soon ended after that, and you could feel the productivity on the floor rise as everyone bent their will to accruing revenue. By the end of the day, some were in high spirits indeed; others, not so much.

The next day, tracking revenue was all that anyone could talk about -- when they could pull themselves away from their work, that is. I spent the day making sure that the coffee, soda, and snacks continued to flow, literally providing the fuel for work. No one left the office, of course -- that sort of inefficiency could not be tolerated.

It wasn't until yesterday that it became clear just how far some people would go in their effort to make sure that they received the one kajillion dollars, when we found Faraday's mangled corpse stuffed underneath his desk.

It was at that point that I realized how little I actually knew of everyone else who worked on this floor. There were some people I couldn't even name on sight.

But Mr. Moneybags forbid interrupting the competition. I tried to figure out who had done it, but no one would admit to it, and my expertise from having watched months of detective TV shows only went so far.

By the end of the day, I was bone tired, as was everyone else as we all drifted off to sleep. I'd figure it out in the morning.

It is now
Night 0
.

Deadline is October 29th, at 10:00pm EST (site time).
Countdown to deadline:
(expired on 2012-10-29 21:00:00)

Please note that I may extend the Night 0 deadline if I need to find replacements in order to deliver a satisfying game to you, the valued consumer.

I cracked open one eye at the sound of the scream. It just kept going and going, even as the sound of the knife ripping into flesh played over and over. You wondered how someone could scream so much while their lungs were being perforated.

Finally I'd had enough. "Jesus Jiminy H. Christmas, shut that thing off!"

The intern looked at me sheepishly, and lowered the volume on the movie he was watching on his tablet. But the damage had already been done. I was awake. Time to search out coffee.

I prepared coffee (no one else had bothered) and set out a tray of pastries from the well stocked pantry in the office. People filed by in ones and twos as they woke up, working kinks out of their necks, stretching, chatting. Despite Faraday's death, people were upbeat. Cheerful. Optimistic.

Time to fix that.

"May I have your attention?" I asked, once enough had gathered. "Look, it's obvious that some amongst us are murderers. And we need to do something about that...the old fashioned way."

No one died Night 0.

Reg/Grey you've played in this before so I'm guessing you have some set up spec ideas. Whoever got investigation immunity needs to claim it or it'll just be assumed scum bought it. The fact night kill went so cheap is also kind of sad (and having the second scummiest player be required to spend all their money on it to at least drive it's price up would be one idea). Whoever has oracle should claim it and all the next night powers too (and while we couldn't plan with the previous powers, it's somewhat possible to plan for future powers now). Extra vote should be claimed as well. Governor I'm more meh on whether or not it's kept secret.

VOTE: Grey I'm curious where on the power list miller is?

Given that scum are split into two factions with no night-kill but also unable to kill each other through the auctioned night-kill
I'm thinking we're likely dealing with scum-teams size wise of either 3-2 or 3-3
. All of the lower possibilities such as 2-2, 2-1 and 1-1 would be too town sided and anything like 4-3 or 4-4 and more would be too scum sided. Biggest thing it means though is that interaction-scum-reading is going to be a lot more difficult this game due to scum not knowing all other scum, similarly mafia having day talk means they're going to be able to organize their bidding really well inside individual factions and the only way we can attempt to counter this is by putting in place some firm rules about how we're dealing with items.

I think the most important thing for all of us to agree upon is that
negative-utility items like Investigation Immunity, Extra Vote, Governor and such need to be claimed publicly and used as early of as possible
, once the risk and threat of them are gone we're fine to go whereas if scum win them and we don't know they have control of it lylo could be brought up a day and cop could be rendered less effective.

I'd suggest that
advertising be kept to a minimum
, it's a waste of money for the most part early game and we're going to need all funds possible. With that in mind if you're not using all or even part of your money I'd
recommend investing it or alternatively transferring the funds to a strong town read of yours
, if we can pool up money somewhere we might have a legitimate shot at beating scum to the night kill or role-blocker at one night or at least forcing them to use a larger portion of their funds on it, either way it'd be a win win for us.

On that note
we won governor
and will burn it off later today. We're both fairly sure that scum were hesitant to send in early bids during the night and think they'd have instead have spent the first 48ish hours planning out their bidding strategy which means the early bidders that there were on Extra Vote and Neighbourizer are very probably town. What I'm not understanding right now though is Night-Kill only going for $31. I really cannot fathom that at all.

I'm guessing at least one of you played this before. Would it be correct to assume that scum has access to more money then town? Not as a whole but rather that each scum gets a bigger chunk of the pie then each town?

Ask reg/grey money wise (I've only read part of the original game). But there is no miller is my point (all role powers are ones we buy and I believe everyone is vanilla at start). Now that you know there isn't a miller how does that affect the vote?

The Bastards are town.

Given my play in Disney Villians Mafia and BBMolla's fakeclaiming in MLP, I'm not going to be WIFOM by a Miller.

This is happening right now.

I am 70/30 based off of his presentation of his miller claim that he's lying, but regardless of his presentation millers die, and if we are going to kill him we are going to do it very very quickly and efficiently. The game can start tomorrow when the miller is gone. We know there is only one NK tonight so the damage of throwing away a day to ensure the miller is gone is worth it.

Why BBmolla's claim is a bad one

  • BBmolla knows the current site-meta regarding millers; miller claims more often than not are scumclaims. His tone in his miller claim is not at all indicative of that.

He throws in a very blunt claim and then sweats it off like it's NBD moving on to a stupid joke about wanting money and that we should quickly NL or lynch Seanald.

I don't like how he presented it. I think that someone that really is a miller would take it more seriously, would be genuinely disappointed or something, they would not blatantly ignore it and move onto RVS jokery. It irks me. I want him dead. He is going to die today regardless so why wait and lower the amount of money we get tonight (I'm fairly certain all players get more money the earlier this day ends so there's no reason to prolong this decision)

Regardless of his behavior, millers should be lynched. I've seen 4 miller claims in games I've been involved with and 3 of those claims were from scum. IDGAF, he dies today and right now.

Fake claiming miller in a game known to contain no miller. Does that fact not affect your thoughts on the miller claim at all?

P-edit: This applies to matt/kanye as well. It's a pretty obvious fake claim based on the fact
all
town/mafia role powers are bought (assuming the last game is any indication).

BBMollas miller claim is him trolling, nothing else to it. It's not alignment indicative.

Mafia started with $150 rather than a $100 like town. They also got $125 at the end of days rather than towns $50. They didn't get any efficiency bonus though.

Everyone not familiar to millers should read Disney Villians Mafia and see where that took town in that game.

Last game there wasn't any roles other than VT (Entrepreneur). It'll be the case again this game. The OP states that abilities are only from auctions.

Fairly sure that Mehdi/SlumberBoys/Salam are town at the moment. And no, we're not quick lynching.
