I think (at least in America) people know so little about Thatcher, and only know her as a very tough female politician. My friends from Northern Ireland and scottland realize this and get pissed when people start to praise her.

I see her as the UK doppleganger to Reagan.

I guess unsurprisingly I knew quite a few people at Oxford who looked back at her fondly.

But, I mean, it's not a perfect comparison to her and modern day conservatives (whether little c republicans or big C tories) by any means. First, although she can certainly be criticized for any number of policies, the world coming into her premiership was vastly different from now. Lots of things that the left barely ever advocate for now were the accepted status quo then. So, the simple fact is that hoping to return for Thatcher or Reagan is kind of a false dream... they won most of those battles. Continuing to fight for "deregulation" now is vastly different than then, when the airlines (for example) were highly regulated driving prices way up.

Second, there are other departures:
