I quite like Gillard. She did fail on gay marriage, but there were no other politicians at the time making an attempt either. I don't even think it was on any of the major parties' platforms (except the Greens.) She also was elected into a minority government and would've lost a lot of political capital trying to push it through.
The Labor Party assumes that Malcolm Turnbull is coming, if not next week, then soon. Bill Shorten and his team have accepted it and they are getting ready.
Fairly quickly after a Liberal leadership change, a Labor source says,
they will make a swing to the left,
believing that the way Turnbull PM responds will “show the latte sippers he’s not really one of them”.
...
But it is Turnbull’s “small l” liberal appeal to a large section of the electorate at present supporting Labor that should give Shorten nightmares.
Labor would need to
wedge Turnbull so his requirement to keep coalition conservatives on side becomes obvious.

Strong-arming the caucus members into voting for you would only really serve to piss them off. Worse, it looks desperate.
