Syria – Okay, I punted this one up to the top of the list despite the randomizer since I somehow heard this song elsewhere literally just this morning & that’s a great of an excuse as any to do it first. Anyways this is definitely one of those odder TDEP songs that’s not really metal at all, which tends to be the kind of TDEP song I actually like; Widower is pretty good too, I think I actually entered that myself ages ago? Anyways. Yeah, I can dig this, quite a bit, the song’s basically constantly evolving without ever getting too intense and while it probably doesn’t have as much driving energy as Widower it’s still pretty good throughout. (GOOD)

Latvia – Okay the band image makes me expect the worst because wow that’s awful. Okay, so, they want to be Rammstein, it sounds like. I guess. I don’t really listen to Rammstein. The repetitive/generic metal riff combined with the primarily electronic song makes me think of Rammstein though. This is kind of alright regardless, maybe a bit repetitive, but the style of vocals does fit well with the music and it’s far from obnoxious. Wouldn’t seek it out, don’t mind it though. (DECENT)

Republic of Kugelmugel – This video is going to be unavailable to anyone outside of the US, I’m pretty sure. Those – Topic videos always are. Oh yeah, and a rap song happened somewhere too I guess. Musically this isn’t particularly distinct at all but he’s decent enough as a rapper, I guess. But I just don’t care. (MEDIOCRE)

Macedonia – Speaking of – Topic videos. I don’t know what this genre is called, but the one thing I know for sure is that I can not stand it in the slightest. I just find this impossible to take remotely seriously, especially with the lyrical conceit. I hate how the vocals sound. I know they’re trying to capture some old school swing vibe here but it just doesn’t work at all and it’s almost entirely due to the vocals. I feel like I’m watching a bad musical. I mean, musically? It’s fine? Still kind of chintzy, but, if it was just the music I’d probably not care about this at all. (BAD)

Burkina Faso – I mean, I guess I can respect what she’s trying to go for here with the jagged 9/8 vibe of the song, but. I don’t think it really works for me. The song kind of lacks a sense of melody musically and while she’s certainly a solid enough singer, I just don’t think there’s anything you could sing over this to make it work. It’s… intriguing at the very least and I’ll probably relisten to it, and I don’t dislike it, but I don’t get much out of it either. (AVERAGE)

Canada – Oh, right, this. Uuhh. I don’t know what to tell you and I don’t know what to say. I just don’t particularly get much out of music that’s pure piano. I like piano as an instrument alongside other instruments or vocals but I rarely find songs where a solo piano can hold my interest for very long at all. This is an impressive showcase of talent, sure, but I just find myself bored more than anything. (MEDIOCRE)

Albania – Well. This exists. What do you want me to say about this, it’s… fine? It’s fine. It’s excessively fine. I’d never listen to this on its own, but it’s fine. The music is fine. The vocals aren’t really my thing but they’re fine. (FINE)

Hungary – I like this, somewhat. The drums give it nice energy, the piano gives it nice texture, and the rest gives it enough interesting flavor. Dig how the bass sounds too. It doesn’t really evoke any strong emotions but at the very least I’m glad I listened to it. (DECENT)


on one hand I'd like the appreciate the variety we get in song contests sometimes, on the other hand, i don't get much from most of the variety on display here. oh well

Uruguay – This is really nice, honestly. The fast-paced drumming contrasts with the rest of the instrumentation being pretty chill, and the vocals fit in well with that too. It’s a bit short though and ends a bit abruptly. But I like it, regardless. (GOOD)

Spain – This is… alright, but it feels a bit overlong and repetitive. Also maybe it’s just me not knowing things but what does this have to do with Beethoven in any way whatsoever? Meh. I don’t mind this at all, really, it’s okay, but it leaves me a bit confused at the same time. What is this song about? Why did they record it and give it such a dumb title? Who knows? (DECENT)

Finland – Yeah, it’s fun enough. There’s a decent groove here for sure and while there’s not a lot that really stands out it’s pleasant enough to listen to and there’s nothing here I really dislike either. (DECENT)

Chad – New Americana was kind of awful and made me biased against her. But it’s good to know that outside of that song, she’s just… kind of bland and generic. Here voice isn’t that unique, the music isn’t anything special, the lyrics are again kind of awful but ehh. I don’t have much against this but there’s nothing really to like here either. (AVERAGE)

Cote d’Ivoire – I do nooooot like her voice at all. But musically this is acceptable enough. Nothing really special or anything but, totally fine. Won’t remember it but on the whole I don’t really mind this. I don’t know why you’d send it in a song contest though. I don’t know what this has going for it. (AVERAGE)

Liechtenstein – Well, almost guaranteed I’m going to hate a song with this title. And yuuup. I turned this off about 5 seconds after the “vocals” came in. Sorry, no. (DID NOT FINISH)

Denmark – Very laid-back rap and the guy is just, completely off the beat, not even trying. Sounds half-asleep. I don’t get the appeal of rap in general but I especially don’t get the appeal of guys who sound like they’re putting in absolutely no effort. Musically it’s fine enough but I am not the least bit interested. (MEDIOCRE)

The Federated States of Micronesia – This entire song happened and I did not notice a second of it. Except “put out the fire boys” over and over. Okay. It’s music. It can be listened to. The video’s audio quality sucked & was really quiet and I had to turn it up and it was still too soft after that. That’s the most noticeable feature about this. (AVERAGE)

Thailand – I sat through this entire thing and I have no clue why. I’m not a particularly good guitarist but I’ve had jam sessions way more interesting and diverse than this. This is just 11 minutes of the exact same thing happening over and over. The bassline never changes. The drums aren’t dynamic enough to stay interesting. It gets faster halfway through but that’s about all that happens. (BAD)

Fiji – I don’t like how the glitchy midi guitar sounds, like, at all. Other than that it’s, fine I guess? Too short to leave an impression. The only noteworthy feature is something I actively dislike, so. (MEDIOCRE)

Afghanistan – Nothing really wrong with this or anything but it’s the kind of electronic music that doesn’t really have any appeal. The chiptune synths aren’t my thing, it’s too noisy to be atmospheric in any way, and too downbeat to have any real intensity. I don’t mind it at all but I’m not eager to relisten to it either. (AVERAGE)

Ecuador – It’s that flavor of light rock that’s entirely indistinct from every other song like it and has no interesting qualities of its own but in a vacuum is enjoyable enough and doesn’t really have anything to dislike either. (AVERAGE)

Philippines – Main guy seems to really want to be Justin Timberlake. A lot of the inflections and vocal melodies give me a lot of the same vibes & the production definitely backs that up. I don’t think he really nails it but it’s got enough class to at least be solid. Not a fan of the rapping but, surprise. On the whole this is fine enough though, sure. (DECENT)

Mali – Nothing really stands out about this except the blaring fake horns that kind of bother me. It’s that flavor of indie rock that’s entirely indistinct from every other song like it and has no interesting qualities of its own but in a vacuum is enjoyable enough and doesn’t really have anything to dislike either. Except I lied it has that one thing. But whatever. It’s bland. (AVERAGE)

Iceland – This is such an interesting artist with so many different flavors of music and it’s a shame that I can only pick one song at a time to represent them. I chose one of the more succinct and intense songs off the album for no particular reason but this album and really most of their albums are pretty dang great; Sgurr’s my favorite & has probably their best epic, but I didn’t want to send something toooo long. Yet.

Central African Republic – Definitely sounds really dated due to the production & vocal style but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. I dig the vocal harmonies and the horns are a very nice touch here as well. Really for the chorus the instrumentation just gets really lush and the drums back it up with a nice energy. I like this quite a bit, really, I’m glad I listened to it. (GOOD)

Hong Kong – Oh man, Amorphis. I’ve tried to get into these guys a few times. They write alright enough music. But they don’t have anything that really stands out, at least to me. Nothing that makes me want to seek their music out. Their sound just falls very squarely under the “European prog metal” umbrella that I grew bored of years ago. This is a particularly straightforward song too, not even any harsh vocals to be had. And saying all that, it’s still pretty damn solid of a song. Just not something I’m gonna be seeking out. (GOOD)
