SCUMCHAT NEEDS YOU!

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Nov 14, 2010 1:17 am

Post by Shanba »

So it's that time again - that is, the time when someone in scumchat mentions we haven't had a new regular in about 2 years now. Which of course prompts the discussion - well hey, how do we get more regulars? And then someone says that we should post on the forums about how more people need to come to scumchat and how we're actually a nice bunch if you get to know us (well, apart from shea, he's just a arsehole <3.) And so I'm making the semi-regular COME TO SCUMCHAT thread. It'll be good, it'll be great!

Blargerer aka chamber has also been complaining that we don't play enough mafia on scumchat any more. He also reckons these two problems are related. Hence, unilaterally, and probably to the great annoyance of most of the regulars, I am declaring today open day for scumchat mafia! Come one, come all, play some mafia with us. What could possibly go wrong?

Besides, if you come to scumchat, you'll be the one laughing at the in-jokes. Better to be in the clique than out, amirite?

I am just saying, we've been a really nice bunch lately. There hasn't been any hate in a long time.

We're very social, there have even been mafia games!

And if more people join we can get rid of that stupid "scumchat clique" idea that idiots throw around when they don't get their own way.

The purge of ZeroFang, unless my memory is completely shot, was almost(?) entirely scumchat hate vs. non-scumchat apologetics/people who were tired of hearing about it. Thus, the two sentences I quoted are not true on their face. (countdown to thread derail about rape starts now)

In addition, while I don't mind a select portion of the 'chatters as players, this game left a very, very bad taste in the mouths of the non-scumchatters who were playing... who just happen to be among the more respected Mafia players on the board now (myself, Sotty7, VP Baltar). In fact, tell me if Rosso Carne is a 'chatter or not; that would
really
seal the deal.

This resentment is nothing new. GD tends to be dominated by people who don't play Mafia and are generally not pleasant to be around. Not coincidentally, many of these people go to or are associated with scumchat. Where forum drama erupts, scumchat is usually in the middle of it. This makes the point about how you don't see any new faces around GD/scumchat rather humorous.

The effect specific scumchatters may or may not have on the forum aside, we are all nice inside scumchat. And judging any group by its worst members is wrong. Not being in scumchat 24/7 I can't attest that you haven't been inside recently, but it doesn't seem like it based on what you've said. :(

If we get enough people we can play Counting!

Vi: The "purge" of Zerofang had nothing to do with scumchat, I don't remember ever discussing it in scumchat. It was people who felt his actions were inexcusable/wrong versus people who thought he was misguided/deserved better, with those who didn't care. This is said with my respect to your view from the outside; There was no discussion on scumchat how to tackle that guy, there wasn't a collective push against him. I made my personal crusade, I let up when he was posting good stuff, and I cracked down when he posted about his younger sister in the way that he did. My actions were not demanded by the "scumchat elite" nor did I demand the support of any such group.

Again, with respect, I am not going to thumb through 40-odd pages of text. Instead I read Rosso's posts, and I can tell you I found them pretty poor myself. I would refer to it as an isolated incident though, and would hope that you think more of me and other people who regularly 'chat than to tar them with that brush. As to whether he is a 'chatter...I don't really know how to answer. It depends on how you define it. Does he pop his head in? Yes. Regularly? No. Is he welcomed with open arms and exclamation marks? No. That said I've spoken with him, but I certainly wouldn't call him a regular. In fact if some sort of scumchat clique or elite did exist, I doubt he'd be counted within it.

This resentment is nothing new, from either side, but I don't think that makes it cool. The "scumchat clique" and "GD Drama" that you're talking about is archaic. This is back from the days when scumchat was made up almost entirely of people who were harsh to many: I'm talking Quagmire, Cubsfan, Shadowluker or whatever Jathan called himself, and at times Shea. Now-a-days you are more likely to see
  • Myself (who, while intolerant of somethings, am often known for making friends with the new guys, and loved ICing so I could meet new people),
  • Izzy (who is glorious to be around when she isn't discussing indy bs),
  • cayke (lovely girl. Crazy, but lovely),
  • Jdodge (grumpy, but often social),
  • Shea (who can be edgy, doesn't tolerate much bullshit, but is good to those that don't step on his toes),
  • CES (smiles),
  • Shanba (Brit, but cool),
  • Prozac (awesome! and often hammered).
Right now we're playing Counting and discussing our levels of inebriation, planning a game of Contact, maybe some Ghost. In the last hour we posted YouTube videos of songs that others need to listen to more, and two weeks ago Cayke and I argued over whether "I am a mad-man with a box" meant Dr Who has a vagina.

I actually am getting distracted by Contact right now. I don't know why you think that everything that happens is somehow discussed, planned, or debriefed in scumchat, but I assure you, so little of what we say is actually MS.net related.

5-7 hours should be more active, likely on the 5 end of that 7, its a little hard to say though.

FFS. Zerofang was a rapist. Even if there was some sort of concerted scumchat effort to get him to leave (there wasn't, it was mainly cyberbob iirc and he doesnt scumchat at all) and even if you think scumchat is usually disruptive (it isn't), if you can't get on the side of someone when the other side is a rapist, then I think perhaps we're wasting our breath on you.

Not responding to the rest because I agree it's pointless to do so.

Also while I'm here, I'll take Oman's post as what I'm not seeing and leave the subject alone. Although I thought Nuwen was in the group somewhere. Also despite the fact that we seem to disagree about everything recently (except the pronunciation of WIFOM) I don't think poorly of Oman personally.

Ythan is not a chatter. But anyway.

I feel no regret for persecuting him. He was either a troll in incredibly bad taste or just a bad person. I mean he deliberately picked a buzzword that invokes incredibly strong feelings when addressing the issue, and that in and of itself was a plea for attention. Well fine, we gave him that attention. I don't see why we need to be accepting of people no matter who they are or what they've done. If a dude came on here and stated that he was a murderer, I think that would be incredibly awkward also. But what's worse, the people defending him were all like "Oh he's just confused, leave him alone, stop being bullies" - that's just such bullshit and so disrespectful.

Most everyone who's been on ms for a certain period of time has been on scumchat at least once. The regulars are, in general, people who have invested large amounts of time and energy into this website. Oman is the title fairy. Jdodge is part of the mini normal review squad, the scummies steering committee and I think something else too. All of us have run, replaced into and played huge numbers of games. But we've also invested in the community and the people in it, so seeing it turn to shit in any way is distressing.

What's more, a number of the more... unpopular regulars are outspoken and opinionated. That's hardly surprising. Consider what we do on this website - we spend huge chunks of time just arguing with each other. Honestly I'd prefer it if people were more courteous to each other, but not at the expense of honest dicourse. Some stuff is just stupid. I dunno. Is there somethign I'm missing here? It's not like scumchat is a hugely exclusive place where only the elite are suffered to stay. You remember what happened with wacka alpaca? We've had a few of those, but in scumchat instead of in md, and the result is largely the same except the same people who would attack wacka would stare down disapprovingly.

It's interesting the debate raised here in that it's been argued to death but Vi manages to keep me interested. I wouldn't call myself a scumchat regular anymore in that when I have gone on recently, it was to find a reviewer or to talk to BBM/Jay/Oman/Cayke individually. The thing you have to be careful of is what way round forum drama goes, is it a site problem with scumchat in it. Or is it a scumchat problem which the site is partaking in. I refer specifically to the Zerofang incident or (although Ive always maintained to an extent that I disagree with this) the Haylen chronicles. As has been said, scumchat is put to the forefront, as we are a quick response unit if you like. As we are on a chat based system dedicated to the site, we are going to spot things and give opinion on things before others get a chance. This can put us in the spotlight more than others.

The other thing is that scumchat is a fluid entity, we never have the same people in there daily, we have regulars etc. but even jay has to go to work sometimes and cayke has horses to look after... or something. I won't deny that sometimes someone may come in and find me and jay arguing over something trivial or they cause friction like Haylen, W.A. or CJMiller and unfortunately present a bad representation for scumchat. I mean put it this way, if you enter a store and you get really amazing service, how many people do you tell? Now if you enter the same store and get really shit service, how many people do you tell? The fact is, that people who have had bad experiences are going to be a lot more vocal and in the end Oman said it best, there are a list of players who A. Do a lot for the site and B. are really friendly. Who talk about there lives, play inane stupid games like "counting" and "strawberry ca(Y)ke" and get drunk and say things they inevitable regret.

Its been a long time since a "chat thread" has popped up or a list of spam threads has popped up due to a result of scumchat. All we are, are people from the community who like to chat about mafia or general things etc. We are mostly in our late teens/early twenties so there is a little immaturity in there but I think we have done a damn good job recently on not letting that spill onto site. If we were desperate to keep that to ourselves and be an actual "clique" then we wouldn't make threads like this.
Mostly retired. Unless you ask or it's something interesting.
