I used to have a pretty good grasp of what was going on, with Gamzee being the major exception. Now I'm pretty lost.

Best guess - Dave combines his time powers and the glowy white Homestuck symbol thing that's been teleporting John around to go back to when Caliborn was born and erase him from the alpha timeline, thus winning the comic?

Nah, Hussie makes a point of fulfilling any prophecy that pops up. Caliborn is going to be killed by Caledfwlch, not time shenanigans.

A friend of mine has been trying to get me into Homestuck for a good year or so.
Is it a worthwhile series to start? Thoughts?

It's a massive read at this point. It's been going for three years now, I think? With multiple updates every day for long lengths. Thousands of pages of infantile jokes and throwaway gags.

I do think it's worth it, though, at least if you like stuff like that. It's kind of a narrative experiment with the implicit purpose of getting as convoluted as possible. Stuff you barely if at all remember will frequently become a major plot point and then irrelevant in turn as the next forgotten Chekhov's gun goes off, except that round turns out to be a blank, and the plot is bulletproof anyway, because people don't drop out of the story when they die, and terrifying antagonists become amusing punchlines as the story grows out of them, escalating everything to a point where the only meaningful measure of power is the characters' continued reluctance to get the final showdown going, except since they don't do that, they have to have some other conflict, which brings us back to the crate of Chekhov's carbines Hussie most definitely put somewhere in the background of an unimportant strip just so he could make later use of it--or if it isn't there now, he'll just go back and photoshop it in when he needs to.

It's a fascinating read.

Can't tell if Korts is complementary or insulting.

For my two cents, it's worth reading. It's not like anything else, in a good way.

It's definitely worth reading, but it's not for everyone.

I follow along for the humor more than anything else, because my grasp of the actual plot at this point is tenuous at best.

If you like epic reads, it's worth it.

By epic, I don't mean 'good', though it's also that. I mean, if you're the type who thinks that LotR is too short, and that fanfiction needs to be around 200,000 words to be worth it, then Homestuck might be worth it for you. Otherwise, it's probably gonna take a while to get through.

That said, if you
are
into epicness and large fleshed-out expanded universes, then definitely, go for it. There's tonnes of interesting metafictional humor in there, too.

I'm really excited to see this thing finally end. I've enjoyed it a lot, but it's needed to be finished for quite some time now.

I'm also glad to hear that the game is actually progressing.

After Homestuck ends would be a great time for Mafiastuck 2.

Yesterday/the day before was the second year anniversary of Cascade, so I'm watching it again for celebratory purposes. Please don't buffer too long.

Still too fr away.
I guess I could spend the time until then rereading everything because I doubt I've remembered what has happened - but then I don't see me reading it all again helping with that problem.
