Mmm. What am I dong here? OK, DP is older than me but...

26/5/1960 (Scottish format) = ?? I forget.

It is funny how, when you don't know someone's age, that suddenly, it doesn't matter? Surely it is what people say, rather than how old they are?

Check out a book by Orson Scott Card ("Ender's Game") - it has some weird parallels to today's world.

Ender's Game is amazing, I read it in one sitting. What made you think of it though?

Mentat, Ender's Game is awesome. Like Sketch, I want to know what brought it up.

It's interesting to know people's ages. This was all prompted by the Saberkitty being 16 thing. I agree that it is what you say, but with some of the things I hear, I feel better if it's coming from a teen ager than if it's coming from someone who is say my age (30s). I can hope that a teen ager will grow wiser relatively quickly.

I was simply trying to figure out the age distribution on this forum. I wasn't really trying to hook ages to individuals.

My guess is he is reffering to Peter and Valentine's roles on the nets of Demosthenes and Locke and how age/sex/race made no difference...the ideas were good and folks made their own picture of the "real" persons. We are getting closer to that environment with our net (how often have you been wrong about gender/age/race/ethnicity/religion etc when picturing another person from the net?), but it doesn't quite have the influence as the Ender's universe one...yet.

29 BTW

Was that actually in EG or did it come later in the trilogy?

mikegoo is spot on, that is exactly what I was referring to. Re-reading my post, it is obvious that it was a bit of a non sequitur but you will need to blame that on the amount I had to drink last night :!:

I think that the Demosthenes/Locke thing actually started reasonably early in the book. It does get expanded in the follow ups, though.

that was a great book...we read it in school(7th or 8th grade...can't rememeber) and many times since...
but i have a questoin for all of you older people(well older than me, day 2 and up): do you consider us to be your peers? because I, at least on the internet, consider most of you to be mine....
but in real life, there are only a few people, 10 at max, who are older by at least 5 years, who i would consider as my peers...

btw, the medication hasn't quite worn off, so i'm noy quite "normal" yet....

[edit]had my wisdom teeth out, all 4, yesterday(wed) morning...expect to kinda float around all day in happy state of oblivion (not that i usually don't, but you know... Image)

All here are my 'mafia peers.' There is no need to distinguish by age, etc. However, some people have made comments that have made me say "Wow, I sure hope that's coming from someone who is young." Because it's easier for me to deal with a teen ager who is saying it than if it came from someone who is supposed to be more mature.

Of course, we are all peers. By definition. My point is that message boards make soneone's age irrelevant. Only the content of their posts counts. Sometimes, you can make an educated guess about a partiular person or, as in this forum, you probably have other evidence whcih may help.

But, this is a truly equal medium to communicate in. It puts "body language" so called "experts" out of a job, so at least something good comes of it.

This is the point I take out of EG.

I consider most my peers on the net, and I have been very wrong at guessing somebody's age at times, although in general I can tell younger from older.
IRL I often am judged younger then I really am (must be my good looks :) )
But here, as someone said, it's what you say that defines your "age" not how you act.

And SK, if you don't mind me asking, I missed what happened to you, but get well soon.
