Of course, even if he doesn't win the nomination, Bernie just giving a respectable showing in the primaries might itself move the Overton window a little.

I think he already has moved it somewhat. Of course, Republicans have a considerable head start in this area; they've been shifting it right for decades.
The thing is, I don't see the Republicans having enough support to win against democrat candidates when they get to the primary. I think the hardcore populace of the republicans already have their earmuffs on but the rest of the American populace (independents included) realize what they really want.

Eh. Don't take anything for granted. This is the same American populace that elected Bush *twice*.

When Sanders and the other candidates started out with backstories and their plans, and Clinton started out by thanking for the organization of the debate, she instantly lost my vote (if I had one).
Webb and Sanders did the best imo.
I swear I'm trying my best

He has to be trolling. He included Webb as doing the best, despite the fact Webb threw so many temper tantrums I'm surprised they didn't take Clinton's longer bathroom break to change his diaper.

I'm actually legitimately interested in what you thought Webb did better than everyone else. Beyond my biases and differing political opinions from him, he seemed uncomfortable on stage, was rather rude and unpresidential (Is he going to yell at Putin for more time if Putin is talking too much?), and generally unimpressive.

What do I need to know other than the fact that republicans are the racist old white man party and Democrats are the lesser of two evils?
How do I ~learn~
Being widely read in general is a good idea. Reading newspapers is helpful, but IMHO to really understand the stuff you have to study the history a bit.
It helps to be a little specific; tell us something you specifically want to know more about, and we can probably recommend some good sources. Heath care, the economy, how the govenrment works, what issues do you care about, ect.

I'm not going to say it can't be done, but don't fool yourself; most Americans would take a LOT of convincing to elect someone who calls himself a socialist.
I do get, this, and yes, the campaigning will be tough. I've worked toward reducing commitments for the spring because I feel strongly about this campaign and do want to help with it.
When people actually hear Bernie's ideas, even in a debate, they'll start wondering why ideas they agree with are matching up with the label they disagree with. It will cause them to learn more about the label, and hopefully change their view about it. Crying socialism alone without addressing the ideas is not something I'm concerned with, because I'm convinced the ideas speak for themselves. Maybe I'm overly optimistic.
It's actually possible that both would happen; someone like Bernie being nominated might in the long run make the idea of socialism less scary to people and make the word less effective as an attack, but might in the short run still cost the Democrats the election. Some people talk about that as "moving the Overton window".
And in a normal year, that might even be worth it. It really seems to me, though, that if the Republicans in their current insane state take all three branches of govenrment, it would be utterly catastrophic.
You keep getting establishment candidates that suck because people keep making arguments that they can't win the election based on basically little or nothing.
