Les Miserables Should Be Called The Miserable

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Mar 16, 2016 11:42 am

Post by Zulfy »

Or the unfortunate, or the wretched, whatever.

Because when people say "Lay Miss Erraaaahhhbuhl" it sort of pisses me off internally.

But you can't just go out and say full throttle "
Les Miserables
" cuz then you're a pretentious poop.

You know how we say it? "Los Miserables" no troubles there. All of you anglospeakers need to get over your fetish over the french language. The normans are gone, Paris is a dirty place, get over it.

is it okay if I call it "lay miz"

also I think the translation is The Miserable Ones

Yea that's fine. My concern is only with the whole title, where you are forced to pick between one-sided interlingual salaciousness and complacent ineptitude.

Except it's a play about France. Of course the title is French...

This is the worst thread on this site since F62.

It is an originally-French musical with music and original lyrics all composed by Frenchmen, based on a French novel written by a French author.

Of course the title's gonna be in French.

Like, I'd understand your complaint if it were an English play based on an English novel written by the English but just set in France.

It's not.

No matter how high the stakes, sooner or later you're just gonna have to go with your gut.
And maybe, just maybe, that'll take you right where you were supposed to be.

But the moment the original title is originally in a foreign language, as far as I care it is totally justified to keep the title in a foreign language when localising it. I'd see where your complaint is coming from, but it's not like some ponce decided to write a musical set in France and call it a French name because it sounded cool.

Also, I basically haven't met anyone who doesn't call it "Ley Miz" most of the time anyway, and I've literally been in a performance of it.

Why call it "War and Peace" instead of Война и мир, then?

I never said "translate it from a foreign language and you have to keep the old title". I said "translate it from a foreign language and you're perfectly justified in keeping the old title".

I've actually always thought it was weird that
Les Miserables
kept it's French title. Like people notice how French I am when I say it properly (same with croissant). I always figured it was just a successful marketing ploy, though.

My main beef with the thing is that french is an average language, like any other, a bit too guttural even. It's only because of cultural hegemony and colonialism that it's considered something to be admired.
