You make it seem like it's such a haul, it's really not.

Don't get a Tesla Model 3. Just don't. If you really must get an environmentally friendly vehicle, get a bike, or a horse carriage, or this thing. Just don't get a Tesla Model 3.

Since when is 5 miles a lot? I mean, if you're in NYC traffic for 5 miles or something, I guess, but I assume Majiffy lives in a place where that takes <10 minutes to get to.

Hard to say, given that there isn't a hell of a lot of information regarding options available.

The Model S has a "subzero" option that includes a number of things, I see no reason they won't implement that with the Model 3.

I don't see why someone driving as few miles as you do would want to spend $30,000 on an electric car. I mean, if you just want to have one to say you have one, and you can afford it, then go for it. Other than that, it doesn't really make sense.

Meh my SUV is starting to be a pain in the ass, electrical problems, etc.

So mostly just considering a new car in a few years and I really like the way the model 3 looks.

Electrical issues suck ass.
I hate when we get electrical digs in because rarely is it "this wire was broken, all is well now." Usually more like "you need a fusebox/pcm/something expensive."

I mean, I'm sure once Teslas start having issues they'll be really pricey to repair, but getting a new car and saving so much in the beginning I'd a huge bonus.

(I know I'm totally going against the point if this thread. I really like Teslas though!)

I live in London, driving five miles is twenty minutes on a good day. I think there's also a cultural thing going on - America is much bigger and much emptier than the UK, so you guys are used to cheerfully making trips that we'd balk at.

Most people get loans when they purchase cars.
And if they don't purchase, they lease. Which has a buy option at the end. So also basically a loan.

I support getting a tesla, but there are some definite cons to owning one, in the interest of painting a complete picture here.

Repairs, for instance, are going to be a nightmare, as is resale.

My next car is going to be a tesla if I can afford it, but its not ALL puppies and roses.

I couldn't care less about resale, as I plan on driving it till it stops clickin'.

Repairs, as mentioned earlier, are probably going to be a fair bit more affordable than the S and X models since the price range is nearly 33%.

I don't think that's true? Repair costs are basically a function of supply rather than the cost of the car. Currently Tesla has gone out of its way to completely block any independent shops from working on its cars. There are no independent shops, and you can't get parts. Even if you could get parts, you can't install them yourself because they are literally the only company that doesnt make its service manual available. There's also no way to know what true service costs are right now since pretty much every tesla on the road right now is under warranty. (and even those prices are pretty absurd, even when compared to other luxury vehicles)

Basically Tesla has a monopoly on service, they've made sure they have it, and they're charging people through the ass with it, and that's before any of those cars are out of the warranty service window.

Service cost is a real concern, its not ameliorated by lower cost of parts (which I assume is the point you're getting at when you say its a lower cost car.)

From the article I linked:

"For a service consisting of: Multi point inspection and alignment check, tire rotation, cabin air filter replacement, wiper blade replacement, and a new set of key fob batteries, you pay $400.

If brake fluid replacement and "AC Service" is added to the previous, it's $700.

And if the battery coolant is getting replaced, it's $900."

Those aren't reasonable prices, and those are not prices that are somehow dependent on "lower cost parts"

People that can afford 100,000 USD cars can afford a yearly 900 USD service for their high-performance luxury electric vehicle.

They will not be able to feasibly charge outrageous prices on a consumer-priced model for very long without going under from
literally no one buying their vehicles after the word spreads
.

Musk may be greedy, may be egotistical, and hell may even be a dick to his workers.

But he's not a moron.
