I'm 23 but I've literally gone to school within distance of my home my whole life (High School -> Junior College -> State School in town over)

so saved money instead

plus it's expensive as hell here in the north bay

it's pretty normal for a lot of people here to live with their parents going to school. Especially in the theatre program at the JC. Saves lots of money. Housing is really not affordable here.

ugh median house price in my city is 1M. Tell me how you got out at age 23 I'd like that. Do you rent a place? If Y, is it your own flat or shared? Are you still a student or u work full time?

I've probably got time to work something out since I'm 9. But knowledge is power.

Invest in a nice bed. You will use it every night and sleep is important. Don't cheap out at the expense of your sleep quality.

To determine all the random items you're missing, go to a WalMart or K-Mart and wander through every aisle. Also: Amazon is amazing.

If you're in a city, plot out all the nearby grocery stores and pay them a visit. First thing I did in NYC. Don't blow your money at a Duane Reade.

Don't piss off your neighbors. I've had neighbors who hated each other over simple crap and it's unnecessary stress. Being polite, considerate & humble goes a long way.

Lastly, find the nearest Chipotle, stat.

Alternatively go the exact opposite route and go hyper-minimalist yoga mat/floor futon. You'll get a better sleep after the first few nights of readjusting and it is better for your back. It also costs pennies on the dollar compared to a bed and especially if your place is a little cramped gives you back so much space.

lots of laughs in this thread

um, for me, in all seriousness, i'd say if you're penniless more or less after first and last months rent plus security deposit (like i was) try the yoga mat route and learn to sleep on your back with your knees up. also yes it saves a lot of space. if space and money are not problems, go hog wild on a bed. get a good one

seemingly obvious things:
- get your internet set up immediately so you don't have to use your phone all the time while you procrastinate
- change your address at the post office immediately so you don't have to go to your parents house for mail items
- don't keep boxes of shit around, put everything away asap, and the cleaner your place is, the more bachelor pad-y anyway
- go to a restaurant supply store and buy a 12-pack of forks, 12-pack of knives, 12-pack of spoons, 8-pack of bowls, 8-pack of cups (restaurant supply stores are cheaper than bed bath & beyond by a miiiiiiile)
- invest in some quality bath towels. at least 4. always embarrassing not to have clean ones. maybe hand towels too, if you care.
- buy a white board and hang it in a prominent place, and use it for a to-do list. (also markers/eraser) (can get all of this online for $40 or less. go cheap)
- get some dumbbells (5s/10s or 10s/20s) and work out by yourself ALL THE TIME. only takes like 15 minutes a day to get pretty cut, if you know even slightly what you're doing (over a few months you will notice a sure change)
- also buy a bathroom scale
- also DON'T buy a microwave, it will make being lazy about eating healthy SOOO much harder if you have one. a good alternative is a microwave oven or confection oven (more expensive, but w/e)
- invest in a water pitcher with a filter thingy. shouldn't be too much. drink lots of water. LOTS.

also as a general exercise, think about all the things you use on a daily basis at your parents house which aren't yours (toothpaste, tweezers, nail clippers, chairs, mirrors, pens/pencils, etc. there's a whole jungle of stuff you take for granted)

you will feel sooo much less like a dumbass when friends are over and you actually have things to accommodate them (i.e. already mentioned chairs, towels, whatever)

make a list on that whiteboard i mentioned of all the stuff you eventually want to buy for your pad

and then buy it

and then make a list of life goals and the time in which you want to accomplish them

and then accomplish them

and then write a little paragraph on there about what it would mean TO YOU to be living a happy life

and then live a happy life

good luck BBmolla.

Renting a place. Me and the girlfriend got a room in this old house. The setup is on the bottom floor, me and my gf in one room our room mate in the other while on top floor is the landlord and her son. It's only one bathroom and we share laundry machines with the landlord but rent is just under $1000 for the room which me and my GF split. May not sound ideal but the internet is great and that's all I need.

Do people get mail with such frequency these days to require this? I just changed my address for like amazon and maybe one or two other places and I was good to go.

But yeah it's nothing compared to SF. Can't believe anyone can afford to live there.

Congrats
When I joined this site, I was a software tester for mobile business applications and the song PokerFace was not yet written by Lady Gaga
Now I test lottery and gambling software as my job. It's funny how my life has turned out. Somewhere a Time Traveler is laughing madly
