Charities

Charities who set up stalls in the public, outside shops or on the street, are essentially traders that trade money for feelings of moral superiority.

People who donate like $5 to a charity overvalue the benefit their donation gives to others. Actually this is a good thing, I don't see how this is relevant to my argument other than to demonstrate that charities provide a service in exchange for money.

Charities are fundmentally similar to businesses, yet charities are allowed to set up checkpoints outside supermarkets and on streets, harassing people to donate to their cause. No way that would be allowed if it was a business. It annoys me because the tactics of intimidation they employ are considered socially acceptable when they shouldn't be. Everyone hates telemarketers so why are chariters any different?

Like, I'm walking down the street, what right does this loser have to ask me if I want to donate to his global charity of nebulous intentions (which I'm sure he could tell me more about if I cared to ask), then make eye contact with me for that brief, silent moment before I'm out of range? Absolutely no right.

An immediate rebuttal to this could be "b-but profit motive", but I don't see how that matters at all. Charities are motivated by "doing the right thing" rather than profit. And for the purposes of this argument it is the same. Both charities and businesses want as much money as possible. Any idea of charities' wanting money being different is illusory.

Charities represent that the government has failed in their job, giving tax reductions if you donate to a charity is just stupid because charities will be less efficient.

All I need to feel morally superior is this argument, so fuck charities.

For-profit businesses set up stalls and aggressively sell all the time. Have you never been to a street market?

Also they have a legal right to talk to you and basically say anything they want as you pass them as well as a legal right to make eye contact.

I dont know if that is relevant.

Anyway you're right most times that sort of charity, or like when the cashier asks you to donate one dollar with your purchase, it's really just selling Good Feelings.
