I just attended one today, I'm posting during my first lunch break.

It's pretty pretentious but in a fun way

I did one of those years ago, we debated the Cuban missile crisis. I was Zambia or something, someone who had nothing to do with it anyway. I agreed to voice support for whoever would provide better / more resources for my people. It was pretty cool.
Also pretty sure the Cuban delegate managed to briefly convince several others that he had no missiles, and that they were in Mexico.

My brother did MUN in high school, and then in college he helped moderate it or w/e. He seemed to enjoy it.

My high school didn't have it, so...

It's pretty fun. Definitely the best part was my senior year, when I was on a small committee and they forced me to actually talk and I turned out not to be that terrible.

They gave me the best position paper award that year but I feel like they just wanted to make me feel good because the chairs basically watched me come out of my shell in slow motion.

Model UN is a lot like mafia. You have a problem, multiple proposed solutions, and have to convince others to adopt your solution.

Perhaps the same could be said of all religions...
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

I don't like parties, but we do have regional dinners to lobby in a more relaxed setting(eg. ASEAN dinners, EU dinners)

I never did MUN, but I did a program along the same lines. I forget what the program was called, but it involved basically being a delegate, and proposing a bill before other delegates, which you would prepare arguments for, and when questioned on it, give responses, and such. I had a schedule conflict, so I didn't go to the final actual event (only the in-class version), but the class even got to go out to Olympia's capital building, and meet with dozens of other schools who had that same program. Basically, it was senators and congressmen, at the very least, the state versions of them.

Apparently, the program has actually produced
real laws
a few times, where the laws these kids proposed actually got picked up by the real politicians and implemented. (Not all bill suggestions had to be serious, though. We were required to write/discuss a bill for the class, but not attend. So I made one about guard rails. Something about them being turned into cement, forget the details there. Other joke suggestions include things like "plans to prepare for an alien invasion": that one, at least in our class,
actually passed
, since the person making the proposal was
very
convincing. :P)

Preparedness for an alien invasion is always a good thing, I've seen both Independence Day movies.

The aliens are never shown to invade here, specifically, so I always just figured that we'll be forgotten about when they actually do show up, too.
