RULES

The game will be played in this format:
  1. Five tossup questions
  2. Instant Bargain #1
  3. Three tossup questions
  4. Fame Game #1
  5. Three tossup questions
  6. Instant Bargain #2
  7. Five tossup questions
  8. Fame Game #2
  9. Three tossup questions
  10. Instant Bargain #3
  11. Three tossup questions
  12. Fame Game #3
  13. Speed Round
  14. Winners Board

MAIN GAME

Each player begins with $20. You will be given 24 hours to answer each tossup question. A right answer earns $5, a wrong answer costs $5 (unless a negative score would result, in which case I take away what you have). I will judge the first answer given by any contestant only. If you do not know the answer, bold the word
Pass
; if all players pass, I'll give the answer and move on.

For each Instant Bargain, I will offer the leader an item and tell that person both its retail price and how much I'm willing to sell you the item for, which is typically not more than a few cents on the dollar. (If there is a tie, the Instant Bargain works as a Dutch auction.) If you are willing to buy the item at the sale price, bold the word
Buy
; otherwise, bold
Pass
. I reserve the right whether or not to lower the offer—if I am unwilling to do so, I will bold
No Sale
and move on to the next question.

For each Fame Game, I will start by asking a question about a celebrity and refer to him or her in the first person. If you answer correctly, you will advance to the Fame Game board; if you answer incorrectly, the other players get a chance. You do not win or lose money for simply answering the question. The Fame Game board contains nine numbered squares. You may select any unrevealed square, and you will win whatever's behind it. A $10 cash card will be hidden on the board in Fame Game #1, a $15 cash card will be added to that in Fame Game #2, and a $25 cash card will be added in Fame Game #3. Revealing a cash card adds that amount to your score.

The Speed Round will consist of however many tossup questions I can go through/come up with in 72 hours' time. You have 12 hours to answer or pass. After that, the player with the highest score wins (ties are settled via a sudden death question), will play the Winner's Board, and advances to play Match Game in the finals.

BONUS ROUND

You will face a 20-square board. There will be one square labeled CAR, one square labeled $20,000, two squares labeled WIN, and sixteen squares labeled with the names of eight different prizes. You will pick squares until you get a match; a WIN card matches the next prize that comes up. (Getting both WIN cards doesn't do anything special and works just as if you picked only one.)

In post 2, BipolarChemist wrote:I don't think I understand how the Instant Bargain round works. I also don't know what Dutch Auction is :/

Instant Bargain is basically "take or reject my offer". A Dutch auction is where the auctioneer offers progressively lower prices on an item until someone's willing to buy it.

OK, BipolarChemist, you're up for the first Instant Bargain: a
SHARP 1.5FT³ 900W STAINLESS STEEL CONVECTION MICROWAVE

Now we come to the Fame Game. Get this question right, you get a prize on the Fame Game board; get it wrong, there's no penalty other than not being allowed to guess again. I will not reveal the correct answer until it is guessed or all three players miss.

Amazon.com, which is known for its Amazon Kindle, originally sold one type of item. Was it originally an online video store, an online music store, or an online bookstore?

Rio de Janeiro. Very good.

This is the last Fame Game. Aronis and Framm 18 could make up some much needed ground if they get this right and find a cash card.

I am a 53-year-old former NHL ice hockey player. At different points in my 20-year professional career, I have played for the Indianapolis Racers, the Edmonton Oilers, the Los Angeles Kings, the St. Louis Blues, and the New York Rangers. I have been nicknamed "The Great One" due to my playing skill. When I retired in 1999, I became the only NHL player whose jersey number, 99, was retired league-wide. Who am I?

Here's the Fame Game board from where we left off:

Your wet dream (seeing how well Instant Bargains went here) and your competition's worst nightmare: You find the $25 cash card I put up there and make life hell for Aronis and Framm 18. The $10 and $15 cash cards are still up there, and your chances of finding any of them are as high as it's going to be at three in seven.

Let's see where those cash cards were, by the way:

I will now PM all three of you and make sure you're good to go for the Speed Round. I understand sleep and all, so you are not expected to be online the entire time, but you are expected to be paying attention to the thread and passing if you don't know. A couple things I've been tempted to do is to extend the time to 72 hours and shorten the answering window to 12 hours. If all three of you approve, I'll make the changes before starting the clock.

That's time, and nothing I can do is likely to change the fact that BipolarChemist is advancing to Match Game. We will declare him the winner with $105 in the bank, and rook was indeed the intended correct answer for the last question (though I doubt there's any other chess piece that could reasonably be considered to look like much of a castle).

I don't plan to run this regularly, so anyone else that'd rather do it is free to, but I do feel that the Instant Bargain didn't work well with no leaderboard like Wheel of Fortune has. I also think the Speed Round needs to be reworked, as I went through more questions than anticipated (15 in all!) and was writing as I went at the end. The original rule on the actual 1980s show had three final questions after the last Fame Game; that rule was changed after it resulted in some anticlimatic endings (as the winner was often decided by then).
