Pointless Ep4 [HtH 1]

Hello, I'm diginova and a very warm welcome to the syndicated version of Pointless, the quiz show where the popular answers mean nothing and the obscure answers mean everything.
For each questions, the BBC polled 100 people and gave them each 100 seconds to come up with as many answers as possible for each subject. Find out what they didn't know, and you'll end up victorious!

Image

Joining the Game

Please /in for the game as a team of two. Each team member must accept the other for a team to form.
Four teams will compete in each episode; additional teams will be added to a queue for future episodes.
For the first two rounds, teams will answer separately, but you will be able to come up with an answer together in Round III and the Final.
All answers must be thought of by yourself; this isn't a test of how well you can Google answers.
Champions retire after reaching the Final, and will have to wait at least one episode before playing again.

Round I

A category for the question will be revealed and teams will choose who will give an answer for the first pass. The other member will give an answer for the second pass.
The question will then be revealed (see Question Formats, below). Starting with the player in Position #1, they give an answer and it is scored (see Scoring, below). This repeats down the line until the player in Position #4 gives their answer.
After that, the other players in each team will get a chance to answer in reverse order, starting with the player in Position #4 and ending with the player in Position #1.
For the second pass, if the team answering is not in last place, a red line will be shown. Scoring below that red line guarantees progression to the next round.
After both passes, the team with the highest score is eliminated, and the remaining three teams continue to Round II with their scores reset to zero.

Round II

A category for the question will be revealed and teams will choose who will give an answer for the first pass. The other member will give an answer for the second pass.
The question will then be revealed (see Question Formats, below). Starting with the player in Position #1, they give an answer and it is scored (see Scoring, below). This repeats down the line until the player in Position #3 gives their answer.
After that, the other players in each team will get a chance to answer in reverse order, starting with the player in Position #3 and ending with the player in Position #1.
For the second pass, if the team answering is not in last place, a red line will be shown. Scoring below that red line guarantees progression to the next round.
After both passes, the team with the highest score is eliminated, and the remaining two teams continue into Round III.

Round III

The two remaining teams go head-to-head for the Pointless trophy and the chance to try to win the Jackpot. Team members can confer with each other before giving their answers in this round.
The team with the lowest combined score during Rounds I and II gets to go first and gives an answer for the first question. The other team then gives an answer. If it is a Clues and Answers question and they believe the first team answered incorrectly, they can give another answer to the same clue.
Once both answers are given, the scores for those answers will be revealed. The team that got the lowest score receives one point.
The team that gets to answer first then changes to the other team and the next question is asked. The first team to score two points wins the round, £1 and the trophy and moves on to the Final.

Pointless Final

The team that won the main game is given a choice of two categories.
Once they choose a category, two questions related to that category are given.
Working together, the team will come up with three answers to any of the questions, in any combination they choose.
Each of the answers are revealed in order, and if any one of those answers turn out to be Pointless, the team will win the Jackpot.
If not, £1000 is added to the Jackpot for the next show.

Question Formats

There are three possible formats of questions in Rounds I-III.
  • Original Format
: The questions will have been posed to 100 people by the BBC. Each person polled had 100 seconds to come up with as many answers as they could. Each player will choose an answer, with no prompts or possible choices given.
  • Possible Answers
: The question will have been posed to 100 people by the BBC. Each person polled had 100 seconds to come up with as many answers as they could. A number of possible answers are given on each pass (7 in Round I, 6 in Round II and 5 in Round III), and each player will choose one of those answers. On each pass, at least one answer is incorrect and at least one answer is Pointless.
  • Clues and Answers
: The question is a two-part subject. A number of items for the first part of the subject will be listed for each pass (7 in Round I, 6 in Round II and 5 in Round III), and each player will choose one and give the corresponding other half of the answer.

Scoring

After an answer is given, the answer will be scored. If the answer is incorrect, it scores the maximum of
100 points
.
If the answer is correct, a number of points will be given equal to the number of people polled who also gave that answer.
If a correct answer is given that nobody polled came up with—a Pointless answer—
0 points
will be given and £250 will be given to the team that gives that answer.
If two or more teams are tied for last place at the end of Round I or Round II, each tied team will give an additional answer until the tie is resolved. If scores are tied in Round III, nobody gets the point and another question is given.

If SleepyKrew and McMenno want to team up, that's 4, otherwise the next person to take either one of them up on an offer gets the spot.

Welcome to Pointless. This is the show where the questions have all been asked to 100 people before the show, and all our contestants have to do is come up with the answers that none of those 100 people could think of.
Let's meet today's players.

In Position #1, it's
Save The Dragons
and
ForWhomTheJellyRolls
!
In Position #2, please welcome
Cephrir
and
ZZZX
!
In Position #3, some familiar faces,
Cybele
and
xofelf
!
And last but not least, the free agents of doom,
SleepyKrew
and
McMenno
!

As ever, the aim of the game is to find a Pointless answer, that being an answer that none of our 100 people gave, and each time that happens, you will get 250 quid. Today's jackpot starts off at £1000.
Right, if everyone's ready, let's play Pointless.

OK, the pair with the highest score at the end of each round will be eliminated, that's all you need to remember. Do everything you can to avoid being that pair.

Our first category today is
Image

Can you all decide in your pairs who's going to go first, and who's going to go second? And whoever's going first, please step up to the podium.

We gave 100 people 100 seconds to name as many
Image
as they could.

We are looking for any unit of official national currency as of the end of February 2015. Where more than one country shares the same named currency, or if the currency is essentially the same one as from another country, we'll only accept it once. We are also looking only for the main unit, not any sub-units or super-units.
And, as always by country, we mean a sovereign state that is a member of the UN.

Save The Dragons
, start us off strong.

Sadly not a 0, but đồng scores you just
1
point.
It was introduced in 1978, and currently 32560₫ = £1.

You said
Cedi
. Let's see if it's correct, and if so, how many people said it.

Image

Spoiler: Results
That's how you play this game! A
Pointless
answer gives you £250 and more importantly scores you nothing.
It was last revalued in 2007, and £1 will buy you GH₵5.32.

Image

Cybele

Yuan

Spoiler: Results
It's the currency of the most populous nation on Earth, but it still only scores you
1
.
It was last revalued in 1955, and £1 is worth RMB 9.54.

You said
Rupee
. Let's see if it's correct, and if so, how many people said it.

Image

Spoiler: Results
Yeah, the fact that India uses the rupee as well means you got a
13
. Still surprisingly low.
The rupee is actually used by eight separate countries, including Mauritius.

Image

Will the players please swap positions and we'll head back down the line.

SleepyKrew

You're currently the high scorers, so no red line for you.

A

is really not a bad score at all.
Currently, £1 would buy you R$4.58, and the Real buys you a total score of
15
.

Thank you to Mitillos for pointing out the first post accidentally said the lowest score gets eliminated at the end of the round.
This was incorrect—the
highest
score gets eliminated. It has been corrected.

Will the

push you into the next round? Let's find out.

is probably higher than you expected, but still good enough due to your partner's Pointless answer.
Currently, £1 is worth R 18.2.

Does the
Won
mean you've won? Start the discs.

Image

Spoiler: Results
I was amazed when I saw it was Pointless. It's used by both North and South Korea.
A pointless answer earns you £250, and, of course, scores you nothing, bringing your final total to
1
.

Image

That's it for this category, but let's see the most and least popular responses (not including the Pointless answers given).
If you're playing at home or just curious, PM me any other currency and I'll tell you what it scored.

Spoiler: Elimination
And that means that sadly we have to say goodbye to
SleepyKrew
and
McMenno
with an astoundingly low top score of
15
.
I hope we see you again on a future episode of Pointless. (If it makes you feel better, the high score on the actual show was 125.)

But, for the remaining three pairs, it's now time for Round II.
Now, there's only going to be room for two pairs in the head-to-head round, so one of the pairs in front of me now will be leaving us at the end of this round.

Our second category today is
Image

Please decide in your pairs who's going first and who's going second. And, whoever's going first, please step up to the podium.
To speed things up a bit I'll take the first answer to positioning I get as the answer for your team instead of requiring confirmation.

Is
culm
a diamond or just useless coal?

Image

Spoiler: Results
I'm sorry, that's an incorrect answer, but it was a good shot at glory. It does give you a reason to celebrate though as the first members of the Pointless
200 club
.

Image

You did have the correct idea, Save the Dragons, as the coal tar solid is a

answer, but it's
carbolic acid
.
Culm
is another term for coal dust.

Spoiler: Elimination
Only two can move on, though, and that means we have to say goodbye to
Save the Dragons
and
ForWhomTheJellyRolls
, but you are leaving us with £250 for the one Pointless answer you found in Round I.
I hope we see you again!

For the remaining two pairs, things are about to get even more exciting now as we enter the head-to-head.
Well, congratulations,
Cybele and Xofelf
,
Cephrir and ZZZX
. You're now only one round away from the final and the chance to play for our jackpot which currently stands at £1,000.
You're going to go head-to-head and the first pair to win two questions will play for that jackpot, but the important news is you're now allowed to confer. So, from here on in, you play as teams.

Our first category for the head-to-head is
The FIFA World Cup
.
We're going to show you five facts about the World Cup, and your goal is to tell us the most obscure.

Image

Cybele and Xofelf
, you played best so far this game, so you get to go first.
Cephrir and ZZZX
, the results will not be revealed until after both of you have selected your answers, so feel free to choose immediately afterwards. You can choose the same fact if you think their answer is incorrect.

With all four of you having resounding knowledge at Sportsball, let's see if either pair managed to get a correct answer.
(And the Cannons haven't won the Cup in over 100 years... their heyday is long since over.

Rome
?

Was it
Geof Hurset
?

I'm sorry,
Cephrir and ZZZX
, but that is incorrect and means that
Cybele and Xofelf
get the point.

Geoff Hurst
is actually on the board as the player that scored a hat trick, but even if you had said him,
33
would have been too much.
The manager,
Vittorio Ponzo
, is a
Pointless
answer.

Here's the rest of the board.

Cephrir and ZZZX
, you get to answer first this time, and
must win this question to stay in the game
.

We're moving from sports to movies with our next category,
Film Adaptations of Stephen King Works
.
We're going to show you five actors or actresses and the year they were in a film adaptation of a novel, novella or short story written by Stephen King.
Your goal is to tell us the title of the film. The more obscure answers get fewer points.

Let's see how your knowledge of Stephen King works serves you today.
You both managed to give an answer in the correct slot this time, but let's see if they're correct, and if so, how many people knew them.

Was it
Dolores Claiborne
?
Image
Was it
The Shawshank Redemption
?

Spoiler: Results
Image

19
's not a bad score,
Cephrir and ZZZX
, but
Cybele and Xofelf
chose the best answer on the board in response.
It was a
Pointless
answer as well, so they get £250 added to their bank as well.

Here's the rest of the board.
Cybele was correct on the lot.

Xofelf and Cybele
, welcome to the Pointless final.
You've already won the important part, our coveted Pointless trophy and the £1.

Image

The important part is out of the way, but there's also a bit more cash you could play for.
The jackpot was won last time so today you're playing for
£1,000
.

Choose one of the following three categories for the Final, then I'll reveal your two answer categories.

Let's see the two categories we are looking for today.

Image

First we have
Most Borrowed Books
.
There was a list published in February 2014 that was a list of the 100 most borrowed books from British libraries from the middle of 2012 to the middle of 2013.
We're looking for the author, illustrator or translator of any of those books. All the books on this list are fiction, no nonfiction or reference works.

And second we have
Gold Dagger Award Winners
.
We're looking for a winner of the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger Award for best crime novel from 1960 through to 2014.
Where a writer has won the award more than once under different names, we will accept any name he or she has won the award under.

Very best of luck to both of you.
You have (expired on 2015-03-10 18:06:14) to come up with three answers in any combination of categories you see fit.
And all you need to win the jackpot is just one of those answers to be Pointless.
Feel free to talk through it in the thread, but please bold your final three answers.

Let's see how you did.
Here are your responses:

Image

Spoiler: Ian Rankin
Did Ian Rankin win a Gold Dagger award, and if so, how many people remembered him?

Image

Spoiler: John Le Carré
Ian Rankin
brought us all the way to
4
. He won it in 1997 with
Black and Blue
.
Let's see if John Le Carré gets you any lower.

Image

Spoiler: Peter Dickinson
Down to
1
. He won it for both
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
in 1963 and 14 years later in
The Honourable Schoolboy
, but not for
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
.
Here's your last chance to win £1000... did Peter Dickinson win a Gold Dagger and did anyone remember?

Image

Spoiler: Results
Yes, and that's a Pointless answer! He won it back-to-back years in 1968 and 1969 for
Skin Deep
and
A Pride of Heroes
.
You go home with the trophy and £1251, which puts you on top of the table so far.

Welcome again to Pointless. This is the show where the questions have all been asked to 100 people before the show, and all our contestants have to do is come up with the answers that none of those 100 people could think of.
Let's meet today's players.

In Position #1, please welcome
Klick and JDGA
!

In Position #2, it's
Save The Dragons and Cephrir
!

In Position #3,
McMenno and Cybele
step up!

And on the wheel, it's
ForWhomTheJellyRolls and SleepyKrew
1

As ever, the aim of the game is to find a Pointless answer, that being an answer that none of our 100 people gave, and each time that happens, you will get 250 quid. As xofelf and Cybele won the jackpot last episode, it starts off at £1000.
Right, if everyone's ready, let's play Pointless.

OK, I'll take an answer from each of you and there's no conferring. The pair with the highest score will be eliminated.

Our first category today is
Image

Can you all decide in your pairs who's going to go first, and who's going to go second? And whoever's going first, please step up to the podium. I will take the first bolded answer as the team's decision.

Spoiler: Elimination
Only two can move on, though, and that means we have to say goodbye to
Klick
and
JDGA
. Bad luck with the ballroom category, but you really played well all game.
I hope we see you again!

For the remaining two pairs, it's time to play the head-to-head.
Well, congratulations,
Save the Dragons and Cephrir
,
McMenno and Cybele
. You're now only one round away from the final and the chance to play for our jackpot which currently stands at £1,000.
You're going to go head-to-head and the first pair to win two questions will play for that jackpot, but the important news is you're now allowed to confer. So, from here on in, you play as teams.

Our first category for the head-to-head is
Films and their Actresses
.
We'll show you five sets of three words linked by one actress in films which had those words in the title. If I said Pretty / Erin / Sweetheart, the answer is Julia Roberts for Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich and America's Sweethearts.
Give us the most obscure answer you can find on the board.

Image

Save the Dragons and Cephrir
, you played best so far this game, so you get to go first.
McMenno and Cybele
, the results will not be revealed until after both of you have selected your answers, so feel free to choose immediately afterwards. You can choose the same set of films if you think their answer is incorrect.

Let's see how your knowledge of actresses holds up.
Let's see if your actresses are correct, and if so, how many people knew them.

Was it
Barbra Streisand
?
Image
Was it
Marilyn Monroe
?

Spoiler: Results
With a score of
35
Cybele and McMenno
get the point. The movies were Hello, Dolly, Funny Girl and The Way We Were.
Marilyn's were Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but that scored
56
.

Here's the rest of the board.
You chose the two highest answers, and any of the ones Cybele suggested would have given you the point, except Keira Knightly. She wasn't in Black Swan—we were looking for Natalie Portman from Black Swan, V For Vendetta and The Other Boleyn Girl, which was the best answer on the board, scoring
8

Meryl Streep's movies were Sophie's Choice, Kramer vs Kramer and French Lieutenant's Woman, and Judy Garland's were A Star Is Born, Wizard Of Oz and Meet Me In St Louis.

Our final category for the head-to-head goes into the realm of literature with
Literary Maths
.
Here are five sets of two books with numbers in their titles, with the numbers replaced by a dash. What we want to you to is add the numbers in the two books together and tell us the total.
Save the Dragons and Cephrir

Here's our coveted Pointless trophy and £1.

Image

The jackpot was won again last time so today you're playing for
£1,000

Choose one of the following three categories for the Final, then I'll reveal your two answer categories.
China

Let's see the two categories we are looking for today.

Image

First we're looking for
Provinces of China
.
That includes any of the 34 highest-level Chinese administrative divisions, classified as either provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions or Special Administrative Regions.

And second,
Jet Li Films
.
We're looking for any cinema release in which Jet Li received an acting credit, up to the end of February 2015. Short films, TV films, documentaries and uncredited cameos do not count, though voice performances do.

Very best of luck to both of you.
You have (expired on 2015-04-01 15:09:43) to come up with three answers in any combination of categories you see fit.
And all you need to win the jackpot is just one of those answers to be Pointless.
Feel free to talk through it in the thread, but please bold your final three answers.

Welcome to the fourth edition of Pointless. This is the show where the questions have all been asked to 100 people before the show, and all our contestants have to do is come up with the answers that none of those 100 people could think of.
Let's meet today's players.

In Position #1, please welcome
ForWhomTheJellyRolls and xofelf
!

In Position #2,
Save The Dragons and Cephrir
return to the battle!

In Position #3,
CuddlyCaucasian and TheBreeze
!

And last but not least, it's
Tatsuya Kaname and McMenno
!

As ever, the aim of the game is to find a Pointless answer, that being an answer that none of our 100 people gave, and each time that happens, you will get 250 quid. £1000 is added to the Jackpot, so today you're playing for £2000.

We gave 100 people 100 seconds to name as many
Image
as they could.

We are looking for any country whose usual-form national flag solely consists of either three vertical or horizontal stripes. The stripes must be three different colours and must all run the same way. We are not counting any flag that has any other badge, coat-of-arms, or other type of design on it.
And, as always by country, we mean a sovereign state that is a member of the UN in its own right.

Save the Dragons and Cephrir
,
CuddlyCaucasian and TheBreeze
, I welcome you to the Head to Head.
Some of you I've seen before, while others are new. You're now able to confer with your partner to come up with answers. The first team to win two points will win our Pointless trophy and move on to try to win our Jackpot for today.

Our first category for the head-to-head is
Dr Seuss Books
.
We'll show you five books written by Dr Seuss, with the last word in the title replaced by a dash. Your job is to tell us which word was removed.
Give us the most obscure answer you can find on the board.
