I guess whatever the tiebreaker was going to be it was going to suck because pretty much the only options you have are to base it on some kind of regular season results.

None taken . I'd probably have the same thought if it was someone else. I didn't actually win three years ago (in 2011), KMD did. I think his team hit an excessive number of home runs that year.

So in my money league I'm sitting in 6th, and my league pays out to 4th. I'm 1.5 points from 5th and 2.0 points from 4th (and 10 from third)

I have two innings left to pitch, so I'm going out with a bang today, Saturday. I can potentially gain 4 points doing this, and cause a point of damage to both 5th and 4th place doing so (in Wins and Ks respectively). These players have a total of two pitchers so far to play. They'll probably need or want to pick up pitchers to defend on Sunday. Was this ethical for me to do given I will be over innings and cannot use them?

Totally fine, zor. I've often picked up players even when I don't have a spot for them just so opponents can't benefit. As long as it's within the rules, do what you need to in order to finish as high as you can. If they wanted them they should have moved sooner.

Obviously the best strategy is to have me manage the team for a week

i know i was doing something wrong! I was in first place for all but one week of the season up to the all star break. sadly, my team fell apart with injuries and such. this is the life we have chosen.

after all that, I ended with 33 Ks, 2.89 ERA, 1.18 WHIP over 37.1 innings.... and ZERO wins.

Brutal. I hardly play in any leagues that use wins any more (although the worst player league obviously counts losses) - I'm down to one this year. Every other league I play in uses QS, except for ottoneu which doesn't have anything like that at all.

Incidentally, the worst player league is probably my favourite this season. For some reason I find it so much more satisfying identifying players who are going to have atrocious performances. I think it might just be because I'm not looking at the same list of names every time I go to make a move.

We're lucky it's this many. If we didn't have these three one-game races, it'd be a lot less. I saved transactions for today just in case the Tigers/Royals were locked in to their spots and rested their regulars, which would have made my lineup look pretty thin.
