Characters:
Duke
: Can Tax to take 3 coins. Can block foreign aid.
Contessa
: Can block assassinations against yourself.
Captain
: Can steal two coins from another player. Can block a steal against yourself.
Ambassador
: Can exchange cards with the court. Can block a steal against yourself.
Assassin
: Can pay 3 to assassinate another player’s card.
Setup:
Each player is randomly given 2 character cards. There are fifteen cards total. There are 3 of each type of card. A random player will be selected to go first. Each player starts with 2 coins.
Gameplay:
On your turn you may take any action, and only one per turn. Any other player may doubt that action (if it requires a card to perform). If they do not doubt that action, you perform it, regardless of whether or not you have that card.
Example
: I have both Contessa cards. I say
Exchange
. No one doubts me, so I perform the exchange action
even though I do not actually have an Ambassador
.
If someone doubts you, you either show them the card as proof, or you say you cannot. If you show the card as proof, they lose one of their characters. If you cannot, you lose one of your characters. When a card is flipped/destroyed/assassinated, that card is face up for the rest of the game.
Example
: I have both Contessa cards. I say
Exchange
. Player A doubts me. I must flip over one of my cards since I do not have the Ambassador..
Example
: I have a Contessa card and an Ambassador card. I say
Exchange
. Player A doubts me. I show that I have the Ambassador and am allowed to Exchange. I return it to the Court and draw a new card, potentially receiving my Ambassador back. Then I exchange. Player A now flips over one of his cards, revealing a Captain.
Certain actions may also be blocked. If this is the case, then these blocks may also be doubted in the same manner as above.
Example
: I have an Assassin card. I say
Assassinate
Player A. No one doubts my Assassin. Player A says he blocks my Assassin with a Contessa. I doubt that he has it, Player A is just trying to cling onto his miserable life. He shows me his Contessa. I lose a card. Player A shuffles his Contessa back into the Court and then draws a card from the Court.
Example
: I have an Assassin card. I say
Assassinate
Player A. No one doubts my Assassin. Player A says he blocks my Assassin with a Contessa. I doubt that he has it. He does not have a Contessa. He loses a card (and in this case since he is assassinated and cannot block it, he will lose his other card as well!)
Forum adaptation:
Deadlines are 24 hours. Meaning you have 24 hours to post doubts, blocks, or actions. There's no good skipping mechanic since you cannot pass, so I will probably be a bit lax about holding this up but try to keep things moving. If you know you will be away we can either pause or try to give conditional actions. I would prefer not to take too many conditional actions though at this time (this may be amended in the future).
You are still allowed to doubt up until that player has posted their action. Meaning if 24 hours is up and the player hasn't acted yet, you can still doubt the previous player's action. This is meant to be used only to help players who may be busy, not to be used to stall in hopes of having someone else doubt. If this is abused I will limit all doubts to 24 hours from the action.
If you do not wish to doubt you may say pass to help speed the game up, particularly in later turns with less people.
If the action cannot be doubted or blocked (Income, Coup), the next player may perform their action. Otherwise, the next player must wait 24 hours or until someone responds (or all players say pass).
Other rules:
1. Don't be a dick.
2. In case of conflict, what I say/rule goes. I will try to be as impartial as possible.
3. I reserve the right to amend the rules as I see fit; if I do I will post in the thread announcing the amendment.
