So any time someone says your name, you get a pm?
Well, not exactly but the rough equivalent I suppose (without clogging up your inbox). You get a notification, think: "(3 new mentions)" at the top of the page or somesuch, which you click on and a list displaying the posts you have been mentioned in, the user who mentioned you, and when - along with a link to that post.
So yes, basically - just without all the inbox spam, which frees your inbox up for actual conversations/Role PMs/etc.
(Oh, and not "any time someone says your name," only if they use the mention tag ("@" before your username).

Another site I was on had this feature and it worked pretty well. Nobody abused it to the point where it got annoying, and it certainly helped get the attention of others in either larger posts or when multiple people are posting one right after the other. It also had another nice feature where after you type a character after the '@' it would bring up a list of usernames that began with that character. The more characters you typed the more refined the list got.
I've been playing recently in another forum dedicated exclusively to the game of Mafia, and this feature is great because anyone in the game can prod another player, or simply call their attention. This feature works exactly as Master Mew and SMP say. There's a notification or "alerts" area where you get notified when someone tags you (you also get notifications when someone posts in a thread you're suscribed to and when someone quotes you). Also while you write a player's username after the "@", a list of usernames is displayed, as SMP explained.
So, I totally support this idea.
