Missing Posts?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Mon Aug 04, 2003 3:58 am

Post by mathcam »

That has probably been posted elsewhere, given DP's posting spree, but I couldn't find the thread:

Anyone know what's up with the missing posts? Will the return? Did they fall in the cracks of someone's couch?

Is this likely to happen frequently? Should we keep playing?

Can we change servers?

And thanks to whoever (Hy? Jeep?) worked on getting it back up! You know I go into severe withdrawal symptoms if the site's down for more than 45 minutes...

I think the server went down, but our current host (unlike the previous one) had thoughtfully actually backed up the site so we are able to continue with only one day lost.

It had better not happen again. This is getting ridiculous.

Can the posts be found? Or should we just continue the game with a days worth of posts missing?

Unless I change my mind later on, I am giving up on this site. I spent a few hours yesterday morning, updating the Famous women thread lost in the big crash, and re-sending out all the roles - only to find that everything's gone again.
If you want to play in a mafia I mod, you can find me at the GL.

 Please change your mind, DP... I can certainly identify, though; I feel like I pour a part of myself into this site -- why is it so damn unstable? I know nothing about the way the web works, but it doesn't make any sense for the server to keep going down. Certainly it's just a matter of getting a decent host?

I wish I had the GL to fall back on, but it's not my home like it is yours.

mole is correct. I don't know if anyone tried to get to the site yesterday when it was down for 5 hours-ish... but all of Hy's sites went down. Had Hy annoyed when he arrived... it had been down for a couple hours at that point.

A day's worth of posts were lost. I'm sure Hy can give more details.

I was on when the site was down. I freaked out, saved my cache to a zip file-which I will sift through later if it's needed; it should have everything from all the games except famous women-and now am wondering what's happening.

Maybe I won't run Intrigue again for a while... I'm going to be a passive member of this sight for the next little while. I'll mod free market, and that's about it. Once this site gains some stability, I'll start joining and creating games.

For the record, we're considering moving mafiascum to another server, the same hosting service which hosts the GL (1 downtime crash in the 2.5 years I'm a member there). It's $18/month, part of which will be paid by me (possibly all if/when I get a job), and we'll see where the rest comes from.

For the record, I haven't actually said I'm interested in moving to pair, so nyah.

Seriously though, I will have no trouble whatsoever paying for the server if/when I do decide to move it somewhere. I'll ask hy what's up with this one.

For the record, you didn't reply because you suck, and I knew you wouldn't mind (since it's completely transparent to users), so nyah.
Also, I've met Jeep and you haven't. How do you like them apples?

Even though mith has made it clear that he's Mr. Moneybags and doesn't need our stinkin' cash.... I just thought I'd chime in and say I'd happily support mafiascum financially. And the news of a server change warms my heart!

Ok, I'll attempt to make this a bit clearer, hopefully without coming off as an evil tyrant.

This is mostly to Antrax, but also applies to any other current and future admins. I appreciate all the help, I really do. However, ultimately, I do own this domain and this site; helping out with technical issues does not make you part of that ownership, and whether you intend it that way or not, saying things like those quotes, particularly when you haven't discussed them with me, makes it sound like either you think you are, or you want people to think you are.

In your particular case, you are not even currently an admin on this board. This is not an oversight. You were an admin in the first place only because of an urgent situation, and I have not decided to re-admin you, simply because I do not think it is necessary right now.

That is not to say that I *don't* want help, either with running lists, making mods for the board, or financially, or in any other way. I do. I posted that I would put up a donation thing not just as a response to DP, but as a response to anyone that has offered to help out. Anything you can do is very much appreciated. I just need to make it clear that there are no strings attached to the donation, and that with or without, mafiascum.net will continue.

That's all, really. As always, I am open to suggestions for *anything*, be it financial/design/technical/game issues, feautres, whatever.

Mith,

I think that it would be a good idea to include a disclaimer (basically what you have posted) with that donation thingy. This would alleviate most, if not all the problems with those who enjoy the games and want to help out while not actually expecting any portion of ownership in return. I know that most of the users here are really friendly and (hope) most would not take advantage of the situation, it would help you in the end protect what you have created. Ultimately it looks like any donation system that is setup would be like a
Thank You
from those that frequent mafiascum.net.

Just a suggestion :D

I have gone out of my way to make sure I don't step on your toes, so I hope I haven't. If I step out of line, I certainly hope you'll let me know right away.

On another note, I should have time freed up starting next week, so I'll start plowing through the mods I was hoping to install.
