The querent enters the dimly lit room and takes a seat at the scarf-covered table. She nervously runs her finger over the tassled edging and wonders what the strange symbols on the scarf mean: a tangle of swords, staffs, fancy chalices and pentagram-inscribed plates.

The reader emerges from a doorway festooned with a beaded curtain, the beads clicking behind her.

She sits down across the table from the querent, and pulls a deck of cards out of her pocket. "What brings you here?"

The querent starts slowly, but soon a flood of concerns regarding family, lover, career, and purpose in life have spilled from her. The reader sits back, eyes half closed, taking it in, while shuffling the cards.

"Enough." She places the deck on the table and deftly separates it into 3 equal piles of cards. "Choose".

The querent hesitantly taps the middle pile.

The reader picks up all three piles, with the signified pile on top

"It was good you came here. This is no ordinary deck of cards. The cards will do more than point out a path to you. They will choose that path and set you upon it. It is sometimes a battle for supremacy among the cards. Do not let that concern you. The cards will determine whether your concerns are resolved favorably soon or if you have a great struggle ahead.

I will lay out a 9 card spread to explore your questions. We will begin the reading with the first card. It signifies past events that bear on your questions."

Voting and Deadlines:

1. Voting must be bolded in the form
Vote: Player
or VOTE: Player, or else they will not be counted. Unvotes are not required to change your vote, but they are helpful.

2. I don't mind if you use nicknames/abbreviations when you vote someone. But if I have no idea who you're voting for, then the vote won't be counted.

3. Lynches require a majority of votes: (numberoflivingplayers/2) +1, rounded down.

4. If there's no majority at deadline, there's no lynch.

5. When the hammered vote is cast, it is officially twilight. All players may continue to talk about the game, but no votes/unvotes will count after a majority vote has been reached.

6. After you are lynched or night killed, you may make one "bah" post with no game-relevant information on the following game day. Nothing more.

7. Deadlines are set at two weeks and extensions will only be given in the event of site down time or a player replacement occurring within 3 days of deadline.

Prods and Replacements:

1. Prods will be given if you do not post in 48 hours. Weekends count as a single full day in determining if a prod is due.

2. You will be replaced if you either do not respond to a prod, or need to be prodded more than 3 times total. You may request for a player to be prodded at any time, but the less you request, the happier your mod is. Prods requested when a player has been absent for less than 48 hours do not count for replacement purposes.

3. If you're V/LA, make sure I know. If you are V/LA for more than a week, I'd suggest requesting replacement, but that's not required. If a lengthy V/LA is adversely affecting the game (e.g., if you are not able to post minimally during that time), then your mod may replace you.without penalty.

Misc.

1. Dark Blue (#004080) is the color I will use for mod posts. Please don’t use this color or otherwise try to make your posts look like mod posts..

2. You can talk about the game in the quicktopics given to you via PM. Otherwise, please refrain from talking about this game outside of the thread, and don't talk about other games inside of this game thread. This is a sitewide rule.

3. No editing, deleting, using invisible texts, etc...

4. Don't quote or talk about any mod-recieved PMs. Your flavor is for you to enjoy and you only until the end of the game.

5. I am human, I make mistakes. Show me them where you see them.

6. Questions > Modkills. If you're about to do something that you're unsure about, then tell me about it first and I'll let you know if it's ok.

Tarot TriviaThe earliest known decks of Tarot or Tarot-like cards date to the 1400s. Known as "Visconti-Sforza tarot" collectively, there are a number of incomplete decks located in various museums, libraries, and private collections around the world. No complete deck from the 15th century has survived to present days.

The Visconit -Svorza decks have beautiful artwork. It is thought that they were used for games, not divination, meditation, study, etc.

From our QT:

[TS]We should definitely claim hated.

There was no intent to deceive. I was asleep when TS first posted in the QT/in-thread. One of our earlier posts tells you more about the modifier.

Fun Fact: The deck she's going blank on is the first Tarot deck I acquired. These days, I'd pass over it solely on the basis of the cardbacks, never mind the Rider Waite symbology/Tarot snob.

Other fun fact: The deck I passed over for that one is the deck this game is based upon.

The reader draws the first card from the top of the deck and places it on the table facing the querent in the chair opposite. She taps it once with her forefinger. The querent bends over the card, studying carefully. "What does it mean?"

"This place, the first card, represents your past environmental factors. The card itself, The Lovers is one of the overtly Alchemical Trumps, and one of the most complex cards of Tarot. As well as its common meaning regarding affairs of the heart, it represents the spark of creative love and the power of life. It also represents a decision, a farewell to a former life and the embarking on a journey made in the purest of love, and not necessarily the love that binds you to another person. It could represent a passion for something you have felt is missing in your life, or a desire to fulfill a dream.

"Here, in the position of past environment, it suggests that your current situation and concerns have their origins in your past decisions to reach out, reach for your own dreams that you may have once thought unattainable."

I will probably be a little late starting day 2 due to a late night run to the airport. Night actions are still due before midnight US ET tonight. Day 2 will start as soon as I'm back.

The reader draws a second card and lays it below the first. The querent stares at the bright pinwheel of colors, feeling that it somehow must represent a positive influence.

The reader clears her throat. "This second card is in the position representing present-day influences on your concerns. The Sun is auspicious, though perhaps in a somewhat straightforward way. The Sun represents life and light, both of which may be given without reducing the original. But, the original may be changed by the giving nonetheless. It represents vitality and optimism, but also suggests there's a possibility of too much of a good thing. Unmitigated sunlight can create a desert. And unmitigated generosity can breed dependence."

The reader's smile suggests a vague irony. "The ill-favored side of this card is a page from an Ayn Rand novel. We will see in good time if that is what is suggested in this spread."

Tarot decks are a little like internet porn. If you can think of a theme, there's probably a deck for it. The Steampunk Tarot is an aesthetically pleasant deck both in terms of the artwork and in terms of the imagery fitting both the theme and the traditional card meanings. I particularly like the Page cards in this deck.

The reader draws a third card and lays it below the first two The querent finds the image troubling. A gaping fanged mouth spews a wall of flames at the base of a building. Is it melting or simply falling? Bodies fall from it - bodies from a cubist nightmare. Above in the dark sky is a staring red eye-like sun or sun-like eye. Other figutes catch her eye: a coiled serpent, and a raptor bird with something key-like clutched in its beak.

She thinks about another cubist nightmare - Guernica.

The reader speaks in a low, reassuring voice. "This card is in the position representing future environmental influences on your concerns."

"The future doesn't look good, then."

"Perhaps better than you think. The old sometimes must fall to make room for the new. But, it can be terrifying to discard what has endured so well. But, the destruction of that which you have adopted and built and elaborated upon is suggested by this card. It could be that your views and beliefs will change so radically that the current structure of your life is simply too small, too narrow and too constricted to hold what you're becoming.

These are environmental influences, though, which suggests that the impetus for such a radical "burn the old life to the ground and start anew" change is driven by external forces, events or persons.

The reader draws a fourth card and places it to the right of The Lovers. She stares at it a long while in silence. The querant is confused. Compared to the previous card, the image on this one doesn't seem threatening or scary. The background is a blue-green circle with some sort of letter or character in it. The colors remind her of a globe or a stylized representation of the Earth. There's a woman in front of the globe who appears to be dancing. And there's a coiled
something
at the top of the globe that trails down just below her foot. Something snake-like, maybe. The querent struggles to dredge a word from memory.

Ouroboros? Maybe.

The reader finally speaks. "The center row represents your life's path. And this card is in the position of your past. The Universe is about completion, success, goals achieved, your place in life understood. Given the environmental factors we've discussed, though, I think this card may be seen in an ill-favored light. Perhaps your goals only seemed to have been reached, or were poorly chosen. Perhaps the success was hollow."

The querent looks at the other cards. "So, The Tower means that all this completion and goals will be torn down?"

"Maybe. Either way, this card signals completion of a phase of your life, and beginning the Fool's Journey anew - turning new pages, finding new goals and aspirations, growing the skills needed to achieve them. All journeys end at paths to new adventures. But it does appear that past successes will not seem so valuable to you in retrospect."

The reader draws a fourth card and lays it below The Universe. The querent stares at it. Visually, it's almost a mirror image of the card above it. The star in the upper corner with its strangely geometric rays seems like a strong beacon, though the woman below it looks away. She has cups or goblets in each hand, both pouring out...something. The one she holds above her head seems to be pouring out an entire world. The one below, the querent can't really imagine. "Strange treasures", she thinks. She looks expectantly at the reader.

The reader stares impassively at the card for a moment that stretches uncomfortably long.

The reader speaks in a low, reassuring voice. "This card is in the position representing the current state of your life's path."

"It seems like a good state."

"In a sense, all states are good, exactly what they need to be."

The querent's heart skips a beat. "What state do I need this to be, then?"

"You have some really strong guiding lights in your life. And you have all the mental, physical, and spiritual wherewithal and will to bring this turn of the wheel to a good conclusion. But as the future environmental factors indicated," she taps The Tower, "the transition this time won't be an easy one." Perhaps you're following an illusion. Given the cards around it, I think the path you have felt so strongly is the true one has proven false.

i really enjoyed kagami's setup spec in both the game thread and the qts. the corvus corax site she linked to is a good read but it wasn't the inspiration for my roles. i used the LWB plus my own idiosyncratic interpretations. i followed some modifier conventions for some roles but not all with the intent of throwing off a mass claim. balancing a vig kill was a challenge. i was sad that Aeon wasn't anyone's first choice because i thought it would let me develop a cool role. but having lovers plus art gave me an opportunity to work an alchemical subtheme into the game that probably no one but me would appreciate but hey my name is fferyllt after all.

plane wifi and tablet mode ftw.

I had several short essays planned to use when I needed to bump the thread, but all those drafts were lost due to the database roleback that happened partway through day 1. I wish I had kept offsite copies of them. If I ever do elaborate bumps like that in the future I certainly will after this game experience!

Thank you all for playing! And thank you for staying active, even with the downtime and hiatus during day 1. Even in 9 player games, it's pretty rare not to have to replace a single player. I hope you enjoyed playing the game as much as I enjoyed designing and moderating it.

And once again, thanks to bork for reviewing the design! It was a better game thanks to his feedback.
