Anti-proxy measures coming soon

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Jul 25, 2007 9:27 pm

Post by jeep »

Howdy all,

We're starting to have some issues with people using anonymizers and proxies to circumvent the rules of the site. Because of this, I'm going to start taking counter measures.

I'm going to start with blocking about 1000 known proxy IPs. If you are using any of these tools and cannot post, this will likely be the reason. I'll continue by blocking anything that resolves to a known anonymizer.

Also, if you registered from one of those IPs, I will be contacting you and asking you to post without an anonymizer. If you refuse, your account will be banned until mith is convinced that you are not breaking any rules. If you agree, there will be no issues.

We do NOT use your IP for any nefarious purposes. We're only starting to use them in order to help us keep the site running smoothly. If the people using anonymous alts hadn't been causing problems, we would probably have just turned a blind eye. But since it appears they are using them to cheat and cause trouble, we have to do something.

Regards,
-JEEP

Because of these rules, I am now in a bind. I go to a residential high school that likes to block everything known to man, so I have to use a proxy to view this site :(. I don't have any malicious intentions, but I understand that you need to protect the security of the forums. Is there any way you can help me? Thanks for any help.

It's possible that I can set up a bypass for specific users. It would need to be approved by mith.

I don't really understand, but this could relate to me in some way.

In August I will be going on an extended vacation abroad for around a month. I will have access for a computer, but it will be at a college.

I'm quite concerned that since this could be my only method of access, I could end up not being able to access MS for about a month, which is pretty much the worst case scenario for me at the moment.

Is this even what you are talking about, jeep, or am I being a bit dim?

This will affect a very small percentage of users. Simply changing your location from one place to another will not trigger this, Aimee. Anonymizers and proxies are almost always a conscious choice...

I applaud this. Doesn't effect legitimate alt users, while cracking down on the ones causing the problems.

I occasionally connect to mafiascum using my school's VPN, because I'm usually supposed to be watching a lecture webcast when I'm actually playing scum. Will I get kicked off?

It's unlikely that your school will be on the list of known anonymizers.

That is the most brilliant idea ever that I have never figured out how to utilize.

You know, going to restricted sites through a proxy
(Using the proxy as the site, and the proxy then opens up the content to be clear)

Proxies are useful tools for getting around restrictive settings set at school and the like.

I understand that a rule is needed, however this is a sad thing for anyone who can't access scum from school without a proxy.

Right... if you use an anonymizer to get around school restrictions (but what kind of moron administrator doesn't shut down the most common anonymizers along with the sites they are trying to restrict?)

I got on Mafiascum from March to May at school during keyboarding class, and I didn't use an anonymizer. I just got on the website, then afterwards deleted the history of me ever going to that website. The administrators at our school don't shut down anything, because I guess it is just a middle school, they don't care, and they don't think kids are naughty like that. :) They just have some websites like google where you can't search anything, same for yahoo, etc. They have a list of banned sites.

Yeah, but that state is Kansas. In Kansas, if you teach that monkeys are, in fact, not Satan's tools to damn humanity, your school is taking an extremely liberal approach to biology.

My school shut down proxies everywhere and youtube in computer labs to save bandwidth. Surprisingly, www.pussy.org loaded without a problem.

Oh, thats about actual pussy. I see. I thought it was one of those faux-dirty site names that would be about cats or something.

My school has some(maybe even a lot) of the proxies blocked, however there are some that they missed. If both you and my school are trying to block proxies it just became exponentially harder to find a proxy I can use to access this site.

If you use a proxy, contact mith. I can look into making exceptions for specific users- if there is enough reason to.

...what about those of us whose ISPs use proxies (HughesNet, in my case)?

I
think
I can bypass the proxy somehow, but I'm not entirely sure.

What about those of us who are alts and don't want you to know that we are alts and, in fact, who we really are?

Oh shit, I probably should have sent that by PM...
