People like you are why I hate playing SC online.
if at any time he had actually pushed, he would have steamrolled me

instead he kept turtling and not defending his expos properly, and i kept picking off bits of his workforce at his mostly undefended expos

Flameaxe wrote:Alright, part bump, part wanting input. Talking with JD about how to format it all, and we have two options:
-One giant round robin where everyone plays everyone once, leading to a seeded 8p single elimination bracket.
-Two smaller "division" round robins of 4/5 players, where the top two of each division moves on to a 4p single elimination bracket.

It basically boils down to the commitment of playing on the upwards of (minimum) 8/9 games vs. playing a minimum of 3/4 games. Obviously, organizing times to play against 4 people is a lot easier than 8.

As for smaller details, the bracket stages will most likely be a best of three, map 1 chosen by the higher seed, map 2 by the lower seed, map three randomly generated? We can do that or give each player two map vetoes from the list of 1v1 maps and figure it out from there. We'll use the standard set of 1v1 maps used in ladder play (Jungle Basin, Scrap Station, Steppes of
Cheese
War, Xel'Naga Caverns, Delta Quadrant, Lost Temple, Metalopolis).

I was going to mention something else, but I can't remember.
would ++ the whole map veto then random thing if 1 veto as opposed to 2

would we have any rules on races/changing thereof in any bo3 or the like?

Upload some replays for us to look at. In my experience in asking people advice it's hard for them to give you advice that'll actually work for you unless they can see the whole picture. It's improved my game quite a bit (even if I haven't had the time to play to prove that).

Select each building while holding the Shift key, then press ctrl+hotkey to hotkey all of them.
Or if you already have one hotkeyed, select the stuff you want to add to the hotkey and then shift+hotkey to add them to the control group!

There's making a profit, and then there's "keeping your game at full price when any other corporation would have dropped it by £10 or so by now".
Seriously, when EA have better business sense than you, you have issues.
there's also the innate difference between most games wherein it's more "here are some maps, here are some servers, let's watch the cash roll in and start throwing together next year's release" and blizzard's model of attempting to foster an actively competitive atmosphere for what will likely be a fairly long time (i would imagine they wouldn't do a server shutdown for a long time if ever; it'd probably come after any sc3 is released, which could be years upon years from now), not to mention that there's no reason to drop the price from full when there are still people buying it

i'd expect at most a $10-$20 price drop when heart of the swarm comes out, if not more

also, they have no reason to try to please the people who refuse to buy their products at full price because
they don't buy their products at full price

Ladder reset just happened and I lost my first game afterwards.
Also, the best ranked team thing is a technical limitation; normally that screen will show your best ranked 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 team as well. It just happens that your best 1v1 team is yourself.

Which is kind of awkward.

What is this, I don't even....

Like did he just leave them in the middle of a flat open field on hold position?
we 5 warpgate zealot + a shitload of speedling rushed them, the P rushed to colossi while the T is T and thus went for one metric fuckton of rines

peg squeezed one stalker in which helped, and they were essentially already dead and unable to produce anything - the toss though had the one colossus out, which i swarmed with lings because unupgraded colossi without range vs speedlings isn't actually that bad if you can get a full surround

Mainly because initially Blizzard had hinted that you'd be paying the full retail price for a brand new game on all 3 games since the split was announced. Only recently have they stated "We will be pricing HotS and the other Protoss lame-o x-pac as expansions."

I'll buy it no matter what, but the justifications that were being used for full-price were wrong, imo.

Except this is false. From the moment they announced that SCII would be a trilogy, it has been stated that the HotS and LotV will both be priced as expansions. They never initially hinted that you would be paying full retail price for all 3 games.

EDIT: http://www.starcraft-source.com/article ... ew/?id=261

They'll be priced appropriately to the content. Right now, the plans are to do something along the lines of a full single player campaign and some additional features to the multi-player side.
It'll obviously use the same engine; so that, to me, is an expansion price point.
If we decided to put in 3 new races and a bunch of new technology and features, maybe that would be a stand-alone product.
But right now, we're looking at much more of an expansion-like feature set.

This all from August, 2009.

Are we going to actually make this happen? I can start working on figuring out format/like that if there's actual interest.

KoC, are you on the EU server? We're all on NA so that'll probably unfortunately take you out of it.

With KoC out, we could do the rest of us in a 5-player double elimination tournament. Would you be down for that? If so, I'll set up the brackets and we'll start working out the dates and times.

seems pretty silly to do a 5-player double elim tournament, just sayin'

we need at least 8 to make this work

Oh your casting is going to be just top notch I know it.

fuck off

xRECKONERx wrote:@JD, with Moratorium in, a six-player double-elimination tournament works just fine.

First two games are played
Winners of first two games face the two people who didn't play
4 losers enter losers bracket; 2 winners face off
Winner of loser's bracket faces loser of winner's game
Championship game

a 6 player double elim is also silly

the correct way to run a less-than-8 person tournament is to run either a round-robin style preliminary of bo1 matches with a 4-player single elim seeded final bracket running bo3 in the semis and bo5 in the final

the even more correct way is to attempt to recruit people, then decide on an actual format once we know how many people we have instead of just rushing into doing something

i would like to play if possible, i'm sure we can set it up to where i can cast all games except my own (or i wouldn't mind casting my own games, it might be interesting to have a PoV in the game every now and then)

the alternative way is a KOTH

i'm thinking that those handicaps won't change anything; the reason why good players are good is not because they have a high APM, it's because they have a better understanding of the game in general

i think the best route is to just restrict the upper players out of it, unfortunately

xRECKONERx wrote:HEY JD ABOUT THIS FUCKING TOURNAMENT

Yes, about this fucking tournament.

Here's the format that we think will work best:

Players randomly distributed into two divisions of 6 players each.

Everyone in a division plays everyone else in their division once in a best-of-1 matchup. Matches will have deadlines for play, it will be both players' responsibility to set up a time to play their individual matches. All replays must be submitted to me for casting purposes.

After the finishing of group play (which should take approx. 2 and a half weeks), bracket play will begin. The top 4 from each division will be seeded into bracket A to fight for the overall win. The remaining 4 players will be seeded into bracket B to fight for our amusement (and 9th, I guess). Bracket play will be best of 3 for the first two rounds, best of 5 for the finals, and take approximately 2 weeks.

The map pool will be the GSL map pool (because it has Bel'Shir Beach and Bel'Shir Beach is
fucking awesome
). That means the maps available for play will be the following:

  • Bel'Shir Beach
  • Crevasse
  • Crossfire SE
  • Dual Sight
  • Metalopolis
  • Tal'Darim Altar LE
  • Terminus SE
  • Xel'Naga Caverns
  • Xel'Naga Fortress

Players will each be able to veto one map for all of their pool play matches (this will allow us to figure out the maps for all the match-ups ahead of time, thus allowing pool play to move on in a timely manner); after that, a map will be randomly selected from the non-vetoed maps for each match. In the bracket stage of the tournament, players will veto two maps per match-up; following that, the first map will be randomly selected from the remaining maps. After each round, the loser of the previous game selects the next map from the non-vetoed maps (maps cannot be played twice in one series).

Our current player list looks like this:

xRECKONERx (T)
ReaperCharlie (?)
Papa Zito (T)
gandalf5166 (T)
UltimaAvalon (T)
AGar (T)
DeathRowKitty (Z)
JDodge (R)
Flameaxe (P)
pickemgenius (P)
Moratorium (P)
Albert B. Rampage (?)

What does everyone think? Assuming everyone's still on board, we can start sometime this week.

things i need to know before we start so i can get some things made up ahead of time:

races for: gandalf, kiwieagle

thoughts on map pool, any issues people have with the format, etc (before the obvious question, i feel that the ladder pool leaves a lot to be desired)

a list of people who are interested in helping to cast the games; i plan on having sort of a rotating co-caster slot, i know shanba/KoC/gamma had expressed interest

Moratorium wrote:Well, for map pool, I guess the question becomes what is it that you are trying to accomplish with the map pool? Do you want to tailor it to newer players in some aspect? Do you have any particular goal with the map pool? If not, taking a GSL list is fine.

Consider that several players may have relatively little concept of how to adapt their playstyle based on the map. So I don't think you can go very wrong with just a varied list of map styles.

I don't feel that the maps in the Blizzard pool are all that good; I feel that we should be using something more tailored to competitive play.

Moratorium wrote:Also, is it worth considering Bo3 to at least try to lessen cheese for pool play, or is that just too many games... (and at this exact moment I'm thinking to myself I'm using way too many brain cells on a bronze/silver tournament).

I'm generally good with the tournament format.

I'm thinking that there's no real reason to do best of 3 in pool play, and that it'll drag things out too much.

i'm thinking that the smartest way of doing business here is to have ABR do his placement matches, yes; as soon as he's placed in the appropriate league, we'll be able to go

it would be for the best for the tournament in general if we get this done as soon as possible so we can start; i'm ready to go with alternate versions of everything if things change

Real question is why the hell isn't he building marauders v Protoss

Mora wrote:3) Idle Factory time

- Solution: Build it later if you're going to build it at all.

Fax is a prereq for starports; he needed to build one to get a starport out, but yes, there's no reason for him to not be producing from it once he has the spare income to be churning units out of them without sacrificing building other things more important to his (i feel pretty awful v toss) build.

My main concerns with the replay are less on the pure number-crunching side and more on the major issues side; decreasing his idle times to put out 4.36 more marines is less important than creating an army comp that works effectively (and thus allows your money to be spent more effectively; it's a much bigger waste if he's throwing away 15 marines that he shouldn't have in favor of marauders than it is that he creates 4.36 more)

It's all about macro in the low leagues, baby.

And it's better to work on your overall game so that if/when you get to the higher leagues, you're a better overall player as opposed to one who only knows how to make stalkers really, really quickly.

An important part of economy that people seem to overlook is not just how much money you can get and how quickly you can spend it, but whether or not what you're spending it on is the most effective usage of your limited resources. It's much better to learn what units do, how they work with/against each other, and when to build them so that you can most effectively use your production than it is to just produce a shitload of stuff.

One guy's push to the top doesn't prove that the correct choice is solely to make one unit until you have enough to just stomp over them; it does prove that macro wins games. Why ignore a large portion of it? The real reason he kept winning games is because
nobody figured out what he was doing and came up with an appropriate counter
. One of the things that I need to work on (and that people often ignore) is that scouting wins games. Had someone just figured out he was massing stalkers and nothing but stalkers, they could have appropriately countered his strategy and rolled his face in.

Everyone jumping down their throats about shit is ridiculous. Yes, they made some big mistakes. No, I haven't seen you do fuckall for the SC2 community.

Your big thing is "Well MLG and Dreamhack are soooo much better." MLG has been around since 2002. DreamHack? It started in 1994. MLG has sponsorship from major American corporations who are in day-to-day life. Dr. Pepper, Sony, Stride, Bic - these are all massive corporations with money to throw around like candy. Who does NASL have? Some mystery investor and iBuyPower.com.

It's really really easy to throw this stuff at them from the comfort of your own living room. It's a whole different ballgame to be in the hotseat and have something catastrophic go wrong, and have to deal with that kind of pressure.

Except you're claiming them to be professionals, and the majority of what they are doing, specifically:

Mora wrote:- It's Day[9]'s microphone not leveled to where he's constantly saturating the mic as he yells into it
- It's the main camera appearing to be operated by Micheal J. Fox, no one thought to invest in a tripod.
- It's Tasteless having to tell the observer every five minutes to look at something important happening
- It's the crazy awkward interviews
- It's the audio being mis-balanced where for the first half day your right speaker was twice the volume of your left
- It's "hey is your mic on? I don't think my mic's on"
- It's the projectors apparently being misaligned and so the shots up on the screens for the audience were crooked
- It's the 30 minute gaps between matches
- It's the players not being ready despite those gaps and the announcers having to fill waaaayyy too much time

Reek not of not having the funds to put on this tournament, but the general inability by its organizers to ensure that everything is running smoothly. You said it yourself; this isn't Xeris' first time around the block. The fact that he's putting on such a shoddy production
despite
that is a poor sign.

Saying "I haven't seen you do better" is an illegitimate excuse if not just because we as fans still have the right to judge on that basis, but
for the very reason you've stated about sponsorship
. Not all of us can get sponsorship deals. The reason why NASL can't afford better is because the continued walkovers through the group stages, the fact that the tournament cycle itself lasts
3 months
, and because their commentating values and general professionalism is
complete and utter shit
.

I'm not saying he can't criticize. In fact, I even said there were some huge mistakes in that production.

What I was saying was he has no right to suggest they should just pack it in and he would "rather this just not exist," if he's not doing anything himself.

Some of those issues are obvious flaws - and the biggest was the sound, yes. Something tells me they have some amateur who had a soundboard in his basement running it, because I do know - and am shocked slightly that they'd be this foolish - that NASL turned down people who volunteered to do some of the more technical jobs (like the sound) for free.

The players not being ready is just a matter of them being like "Look, either you're fucking ready on time or your DQ'd. Plain and simple."

NASL had it's flaws, and the first season was not what most people expected. I expected a lot better from them, especially given the people that they have on board. But anyone suggesting that we'd be better off without a major tournament or league existing because of an initial bad run is a
fucking idiot.

he stated it's an embarrassment to the community and it may turn off first-time sc2 viewers who may otherwise be interested were they watching a tighter-run operation, a sentiment i fully agree with; do you disagree that any potential first-time viewer may be put off by how low-quality the production is?

You uh got that backwards, close postitions anything is zergs worst nightmear.

Except I was going for a forge expand and there is no ramp in Shattered Temple. I would have lost against any kind of early pressure, and I'm not even talking about early pool :?

then don't go for a build you don't think you can pull off on that map

that's kind of how it is for all match-ups at lower levels unless you're doing something hilariously cost-ineffective like mass ravens or something

infestors aren't enough of a swiss army knife right now that they need another caster?

doesn't change whether or not he cares about ESPORTS AND FRIENDSHIP AND BUNNIES AND ALL THAT SHIT, just means that he'd rather continue to have a large stream of income right now

So I logged on out of boredom earlier to do my placement matches since I hadn't played in 2 months. Went 3-2 (won a game I shouldn't have and lost a game I possibly shouldn't have so it kind of evened out), got promoted to silver.

I'd forgotten how hard this game is, though. Wish I had the mechanical capacity for it :<

I don't think anyone would argue that the mechanical skill required for LoL is at all equivalent to Starcraft. I actually don't get what you're trying to say here.
