Well I mean, if you want to design/sprite your own pokemons/trainer that'd be cool, my imagination has certain limits, but you dont have to.
i'm revisiting the idea of messing around with the midi engine and seeing how feasible it'd be to score a custom soundtrack for the game, but i'll work on spriting if i get a few spare moments as well since why not

yeah, i've done a lot of legwork in terms of figuring out how and it seems like it'd be fairly easy, there are mostly three limitations:
1. i don't have a good midi controller so i'll be stuck either working with keyboard/mouse solely or trying to find a way of wiring my old casio keyboard to my computer
2. even if i do so i haven't really played any instruments in like 3 years
3. i don't have any experience working with the software beyond a cursory examination
so i'll try messing with it and with any luck i
may
be able to start producing actual samples of stuff in 3 weeks or so (and that's a kind of short estimate at this point)

You can be a duo-gym with Jdodge!
I bet I could program that d<_<
you could put nexus (if fire) as the gym leader in saffron city and me (as grass) as the gym leader of the fighting gym thing there

I've made a quicktopic with all the info we've figured out so far on the composition front for use in this whole custom soundtrack idea - let me know if you want in on the music team (all you really need is the ability to create/edit MIDIs; I'll openly admit that I probably don't actually have the music knowledge necessary to really compose a full-on soundtrack but I'm studying at least an hour a day on it to keep working) so we can hopefully get some balls rolling.

i decided to remake the sprite i'd made for myself but i'm still not happy with it:
i also made one for bev where i wanted to do a significantly different take on a bug-type gym leader:
the idea was quite simple; bug catchers and bug-type gym/E4 people tend to be younger (with the notable exceptions of burgh and some random bug-type trainers in gen 4 i think it was), and generally male (with the exception of bugsy); i wanted to do something a little bit older, sort of a high school-esque one instead
here are also overworld sprites
bev:
jd:
quadz:
i also have one waiting for approval from that specific person (waiting until i see them on aim) and am willing to do more somewhat to custom if people want me to do theirs as well

I finally got the song table for FireRed loaded up (it was actually pretty easy, just needed to fix an XML doc). I can now safely say that the way the game handles music makes even less sense than I thought prior. Apparently FireRed actually contains several tracks from Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald for
no fucking reason
whatsoever.
On the brighter side that brings the total # of tracks we have to spare to about 18 so far by my estimation. Got some really neat shit planned.

And I assume since the types are all changing you're going to do custom base stats for all the pokemon you create? I guffaw at your ambition. Tell me you're not changing the layout of the world. What about choosing the location of where wild pokemon can be found? My mind boggles.

think i've actually composed in my head (haven't gotten anything tangible done on it yet) the first actual piece of soundtrack, thinking it can probably used as a replacement for the rival's leitmotif thing and then repurposed for a battle theme
i'm realizing that my general mode of operation where game music is concerned is either really low-key and melancholic or generally epic and that's posing a minor issue for composing music that fits really well with a pokemon game
edit: considering just pulling tracks from various pokemon games and giving them a work through the ol' remixing studio at first and then composing anything if stuff just happens to come to me during the process

have had a major breakthrough to where i have at least figured out a sort of prototype gym theme for now (going to work along the same basic lines as your standard gym theme anyways but i figure getting this done and out of the way at least allows me to develop a sort of "style" to work within)

can i do shockingly bad? i already have a track or two that i've messed with that will never see the light of day for being awful
