Team Fortress 2 - MafiaScum Edition COMING BACK MAYBE?

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

Team Fortress 2 - MafiaScum Edition COMING BACK MAYBE?

Tips:

Scout:

- Get in close. Your scattergun does way more damage at shorter ranges.
- When retreating, take out your pistol. It can do some nice damage if you aim. That and your quick speed should get you out of scrapes.
- Use your double jump to reach good ambush spots.
- Stay away from sentries. Let the heavier classes deal with them. You're a lightweight harassment class.

Soldier:

- Aim at people's feet. Splash damage is better than no damage.
- Have a plan. When you fire all your rockets, either retreat to reload, or press on with your shotgun.
- Get good at rocket jumping. Crouch in the air and shoot a rocket at your feet, then rain death on your enemies from above. Nobody expects it.
- Use cover. Pop out to fire a rocket, then go back. It's the best way to take out Heavies and sentries.

Pyro:

- When in an open area, use your shotgun. It has a better range and deals good damage.
- You work best as either a hit and run or ambush class.
- Airblast helps out a lot. Use it when travelling with groups to keep your team safe from rockets, and knock people off control points with it. It can also put out teammates on fire.
- You are a Spy's worst enemy. Spray flames everywhere to root out the buggers. They can't cloak to escape you.

Demoman:

- Hold down the mouse button to charge up stickybombs and let them fly farther.
- Create traps by putting bombs on the inside of doorways where enemies can't see them.
- Bouncing grenades off walls is a good way to take out sentries without them shooting you.
- Aim well and be careful. You don't have a shotgun or anything to protect yourself, if you don't destroy your opponent with grenades, you're dead.

Heavy:

- Use your shotgun when traveling so you can shoot immediately if ambushed.
- Jump when going around a corner and spin up in the air to attack, you have good momentum that way.
- You have high health, but can't dodge damage very well. When your health starts getting low, get out quickly. Your health is your most powerful attribute.
- You can be a devastating ambush class with a bit of luck. Try to arrive unexpectedly and catch your enemies in the open.

Engineer:

- Stick near your stuff. There are a lot of opportunistic Spies wanting to sap it.
- Help out fellow Engineers, you can repair their sentries and build dispensers for them.
- Teleporters are important, set them in a safe location and upgrade them.
- Find a large ammo pack, and set up base near it.

Medic:

- Needles are hard to aim, but with your speed you can use them to take down a lot of opponents when there's nobody to heal.
- Go into advanced settings and play with the auto-call health percentages and the auto-heal functions.
- Uber the right person. Pyros are good for enclosed spaces. Demos are good for taking out sentries. Soldiers are good when making a push. Heavies are good for defending areas or making slow advances.
- Watch your back and your partner's back for Spies. Don't be afraid to use your uber early to save yourself.

Sniper:

- Be paranoid. You are a very easy target for Spies. Use your SMG to check for them.
- When traveling, take out your SMG. It's best for close quarters.
- A fully charged headshot can take out any class at any time. Scouts, Engies, Snipers, Medics, and Spies die from a single uncharged headshot or charged bodyshot.
- Change positions. After the deathcam, people will learn where you're shooting from and kill you. Use your team as a distraction, if they're not around, beat it.

Spy:

- Don't depend on disguises for too long. They won't fool people. Get in and get out fast.
- Don't wait for the perfect target. Kill someone, then cloak and do it again later.
- Stay away from Pyros.
- Your revolver is good if you get caught, but stick with your knife and sapper. Switch between them quickly to kill Engies and Sentries.

Other tips:

- Enable fast weapon switch. This is pretty much mandatory.
- Enable auto reload. Very useful.
- Enable the function that plays a sound when you hit an enemy, and shows how much you hit them for.
- Make a server and run around the maps to get a feel for them.
- Join a game and spectate to gain insights into how others play.

Sounds like too much fun though.
EDIT-By vanilla weapons, do you mean before any updates? What about kritz? I think the first three updates were really good (medic, Pyro, Heavy). The Axtinguisher almost makes the pyro now.
I mean we don't use any weapons that other players might not have. I know, I love my Axtinguisher too, but I'm prepared to leave it behind in the interest of fairness.

Oh, and I won't be taking /ins because some people might not be able to make it if the wrong date is chosen. Once we've agreed on a day, I'll do a headcount.

I've been through way worse micspam-wise... Sadly my mic remains lost. :(

OK, it looks like we're set on Saturday night. All vanilla is preferred, but not forced. We're looking at some friendly games here! There are a fair number of newbies, so let's play nice. People learning the game can try out various classes, and we'll all offer advice and support. I'll be running the server, probably from 7:00 EST, but it might vary. Server name will be Scum Fortress 2, password is mith. I'll be rotating maps with respect to player wishes. If we get 18 players, we'll go Highlander. Achievements are not the purpose of this server, but if someone needs help with an achievement or two, I'm sure we'll help out.

See you Saturday!

Ambush Heavy is the best thing ever. Find a desolate room, then jump through a window down into the middle of the opposing team spinning up in the air.

SO MUCH BLOOD!

Natascha's not as powerful as it used to be, actually. But try out all the weapons, I prefer the Minigun, but will switch to Brass Beast occasionally. Think of Mini as default, Natty as anti-Scout, and BB as anti-Heavy.

As heavy you need to choose when you spin up. Don't spin up for extended periods if you don't have to, keep the shotgun out. Stay with your team when you can. You're deadly in close/closed-in areas, over long range or in open areas, you're meat. The heavies that get into 2fort and spin up on the bridge die easy easy deaths. Keep spinning around to watch your back. Know where medkits and ammo are, and always pick up the weapons of the fallen. I'm not a great heavy, but I'm a great medic and I work with them enough, and I'm a great spy and I kill them enough. Oh, I'll say it again: Get a team-mate. Medics are the obvious choice, demos/soldiers are great for extra firepower, scouts can flank, etc. As a solo class heavies are medicore, however they're a great distraction. No joke, that heavy gets targeted a lot, and lets scouts and spies flank with much ease. Spin, fire off a few rounds, go shotgun and run, firing off as many shells as you can. Then get to another location, spin up, fire off, and then go shotgun and do the Harold. Keeping this up lets you keep people distracted until they chase you into a tight location, then rat-tat-tat!

I'm a sandvich man, but this is truth. When people see you with a shotgun, they assume you're out of ammo and think you're an easy kill. Prove them wrong.

Yes. Yes you have...

They came out with Polycount. The newest gloves are the Fists of Steel, which block 40% of all ranged damage in exchange for slower weapon swap and melee vulnerability.

The new RL isn't going to be very popular. I think most people will stick with the Direct Hit. I really want that shotgun, though, and I'm curious as to how the crop works. The boots could be fun in Degroot Keep. There's no way the new shovel will be replacing the equalizer, though.

I don't know if I'll use the new rifle, but it's worth a try I think. Maybe I'll use the sword.

I'm kind of disappointed in the new Demo set, but it does sound REALLY fun for just pissing around.

I love playing ambush Heavy, so I intend to pwn with the new minigun. The other weapons look pretty lame to me, though.

I like the new Spy knife, the Kunai was a bit of a disappointment, but it looks like they got it right this time. I rarely use my gun as Spy, so I doubt I'll equip the new one. I'm confused about the flower though, is it just a misc item?

Scout pistol looks really sweet. I'm not sure how useful a triple jump will be, and I'm really attached to my Sandman, so not much love there. The new scattergun sounds iffy to me, I'll have to try it to really get a firm opinion on it.

I love the flare gun as Pyro, so I'll probably use the Detonator, really wish I could see the stats though.

Yeah, well, if you had told the TF2 players a year ago that you would be able to buy items in the future, they'd have called you a lunatic...

No.

And I speak for everyone. ABSOLUTELY NOBODY wants crates nowadays. Either delete them or hang on to them and hope Valve makes them craftable.

OK, here's the deal as I see it: to create a private server, we need a CPU that's dedicated to just that. You can't create a server and play on it using the same computer. Then, your best bet is going here: http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Windows_dedicated_server

I do have a laptop that's separate from my main computer, but it's not that great and I don't know if it'll be up for the job.

The problem isn't that he doesn't have a counter. The problem is that he has no downside. The new minigun is made for ambushing, for fuck's sake. His speed isn't a problem with the GRU/Steak, Natascha can still ruin hit and run attacks while nerfed, and don't get me started on the Fists of Steel. You can use him for any situation and succeed.

He's a giant slow meatshield that is still crappy without a medic, eats headshots for breakfast, can be kited like a mofo around walls, and just eats everything thrown near him. not even at him.

I'm guessing because hitting the ground means that I've got a better chance to at least get the splash damage if they dodge the rocket itself. Which makes high ground and rocket jumping more important, because then you can aim the splash more precisely. That's just my newbie experience, though.

True. By aiming at the ground you can also launch them into the air for an easy shot to finish them.

If you seriously believe all you need for Pyro is W+M1, then you must really suck at the game. Using airblast and the Flare Gun effectively requires far more aiming and timing ability than any other class has. Flamethrower damage is pathetic and afterburn is a fucking joke.

Contrast that to Heavy, which requires no aiming skill and minimal awareness to top the scoreboards.

Running around spreading fire only works on distracted/bad players, although I admit I do use it to torture DR spies. Normally you need Axetinguisher as well. Sudo hit the nail on the head, only problem is that burning isn't as dangerous as it used to be. Reflecting rockets/stickies/grenades is usually a better way to force enemies to retreat. You can flank and ambush, but Pyro is also really strong in a group.

Medic + Soldier + Heavy + Pyro is probably the best combination. Pyro checks for spies, uses flare gun to deal with snipers, and airblast to mitigate some damage. Medic keeps group alive. Soldier deals damage, Heavy tanks. Best for attacking on Payload.

Not the island. You can still get hat by picking up gifts though if you're into that.

I'm trying to find a server running Mann Manor to get last year's achievements. No luck so far.

Also for some reason I don't have the 'kill a player scared by a ghost achievement' which is weird because I thought I'd get that in an hour or two.

True. Of course, viaduct's a fairly rare map anyway.

The above picture is also true. If you're F2P, your success mainly depends on your attitude. If you only play whatever class you want (especially Sniper/Spy/Pyro) with no regard for what your team needs, you will lose a lot of games and become hated. Same thing if you taunt too much or otherwise annoy people. Don't use Dead Ringer, Enforcer, or Backburner unless you REALLY know what you're doing. If you say you're new and/or suck at the beginning of a round, you probably won't get laughed off the server, and if you do they're losers anyway.

Basically, park your ego at the door, accept that other players have been around a lot longer than you have, and you'll be fine. So yeah, it works exactly like MS.

I almost always use backburner, but you can't depend on it. On some maps you can't use it effectively at all. And unless you can ambush, everyone will hate you for using it.

Everyone hates Dead Ringer spies, and with good reason. I've seen a few DR spies that are great, but most are useless wastes of a player slot that do nothing except die slowly to pyros. The Enforcer is just a bad weapon. It encourages spies to shoot instead of stab, I have no idea what Valve was thinking when they shoved that shit out. The Ambassador is a direct upgrade, and it actually takes skill to use.

I THINK that there're two equalizers now, one that gives you faster speed, and one that gives higher damage. At least that's what I got from the notes.

Pyro vs. Scout is always going to be an ugly fight. I'd say scout generally has the advantage, but one thing goes wrong and pyro wins. Winner's still going to be low on health though.

Bad idea. Start with Medic, a bad Medic is still a great asset to the team, it's easy to play, and you get to see what other people are doing.

your effectiveness as Spy depends a lot on how well you know the map. Unless you know where all the sideroutes and ammo caches are, you're not going to do very well at all.

It's been too long since I played...

Medic is easy. Stick to the medigun and heal anyone who needs it. Save your uber for when you're making a push or about to die. Heavies or soldiers are good for ubers, if there's a sentry uber a demoman. Pyros are good for small indoor areas.

Otherwise, you can out run anything except a scout, so be cowardly and flee if you don't have a buddy to help you out. Spray some needles if you get a free moment, but stick to healing for the most part. Don't try battle medic until you've gotten used to needles, they shoot in an arc and it takes a while to get accurate with them.

Pyro, Sniper, and Spy are the most overused classes. You should NEVER have more than two of each on your team, and one is usually enough. Medic is good in almost any situation though.

I tried it, pretty dull IMO. It's mainly about maximizing DPS through class upgrades, which doesn't appeal to me. I liked outwitting the enemy team, not conquering through superior firepower.

Then again, I haven't played with an organized group.

I would totally want in for the MS TF2 thing if it weren't for the fact that I would be playing with 400 ping by virtue of being halfway across the world. Damnit.

I have never been in a situation that required a dual uber. It's fun, but more of a novelty than a required strategy.

Also any medic melee unlock is a total upgrade over the bonesaw.

Medic can beat pyro by retreating while firing. Shotties aren't that effective at range. And of course any class can beat a heavy with hit and run tactics. So that leaves scout (a good scout should never die to a medic), soldier, and demo, and even those guys can be taken down easily if you get the jump on them or they're fighting someone else. Second highest speed in the game + health regen is a deadly combo.

Wrangler with mini-sentry is AWESOME, lots of people use that as their default. I never got the hang of the mini personally though.

I personally never got the hang of Medieval Medic, it's a completely different play style, the taunt heal is not practical even within medieval mode, and IMO the crossbow is very difficult to use efficiently. The reload time is just too long. Not saying it's bad, just my two cents.

I use the blutsager 90% of the time. You should never be dependent on the regen anyway, if you are something's gone wrong, and you can heal yourself extremely quickly with the blutsager. There're plenty of lost causes I managed to win because of a well-timed burst of healing.

I dislike the vita-saw because it encourages suicidal play, the medic isn't a soldier or spy, he doesn't make sacrificial runs to take out big targets. If your buddy dies, you should not die as well. That's not to say you can't be aggressive, just don't take big risks. Once you get better at surviving, you'll get more ubers. If you find a good buddy, then yeah, you two can go off and wreak some havoc, but if not, just stick to the background, healing the people that need it as you slowly advance.

Big earner and diamondback aren't bad, in fact I'd say the diamondback is a straight upgrade over the revolver, but you shouldn't really need either of them.

Gameplay type doesn't really matter, I find spy moderately easier on payload defence since you know where enemies will be and which way they're usually facing, but I'm a rabid payload fan in general so don't take my word for it. Whatever map you know extremely well is the best. You should know where all the ammo caches are, and know all the sideroutes/tunnels. Most important factor is the size of the game, I find. With a full or nearly full game, things get too chaotic, there're more pyros and people spychecking. With near empty games there're too few players for disguises to work. You want a game that's big enough so that nobody can keep track of all the players on their team, but small enough that they can't waste time spychecking or be too cautious. Around 6-8 per team is good.

As far as real pro-tips go, get used to switching between your sapper and knife, 'Q' is the default key and the one I use, but you might want to use one of your mouse buttons for that key, it comes in handy when you're pyro as well. Whenever you see an engy behind his sentry, (BEHIND is the key word here, it won't work if he's in front of it) run behind him, stab him, then tap Q or whatever to switch to sapper and sap the sentry. If you do it in one smooth movement you'll get the sentry before it can shoot you and you can sap the remaining buildings. There's also the stairstab, where you run up a staircase or ramp, then jump and turn in midair so you stab the guy lower down in the air, but it's rather difficult, and pretty much everyone knows to expect that by now so they'll turn with you. Not really worth practising, but good to know.

Honestly, a lot of spy seems to be random. There're days when I'm a one man army, and days when I can't get a single backstab. Don't worry about your failures, just enjoy your successes.

Revolver is good, I still say the diamondback is an upgrade because you only use it in special situations, and having crits on hand is a huge bonus. Ambassador is good as well, particularly against razorback snipers. My aim sucks so I don't use it as much, but go for it.

In post 732, PokerFace wrote:When I get uber I charge into battle with my heavy.

There's your problem. Don't blindly rush in, save it for when you need it. And heavy is usually a poor uber choice, demo, soldier, or even pyro can make a bigger push. You only want heavy if you're defending.

As a general rule to dying as medic, unless you're killed by a scout/sniper, you or your teammates did something wrong. You should never be within soldier/demo killing range.

Your instinct to run away is a good one, but that doesn't mean you can't shoot as well. I prefer the blutsager because it gives the healing when you need it the most - when running from something big and scary - as opposed to when you've got time to find a health kit or dispenser.

Quick-fix is crap, don't use it. Without overheal, increased heal rate is barely worth anything.

Kritz is OK. The general rule is uber for defence, kritz for offence, although I prefer uber if I'm the only medic and kritz if there's another. Basically just personal preference though.

Payload defence spy is pretty easy, particularly if you have the C&D. Just hang out near the cart or just behind it, wait for enemies to start fighting your buddies down the line or otherwise let their guard down, then move in. You can get ridiculous chainstabs if the other team isn't fast enough. And it's usually pretty easy to spawncamp as well, everyone's focused on getting to the cart as quickly as possible.

Heavy doesn't kill enemies fast enough, he can't get into position fast enough, he can't chase enemies, you always waste uber unless the heavy is already under attack, and since nobody fights a heavy straight-on unless they know they can win, that means defence.

Kritz heavy is better. You can make a solid advance with a kritz heavy.

But that's just a temporary reprieve. At most you've gained a few seconds of control, and that's if you have your whole team backing you up. Any halfway decent sniper is lining up a well timed headshot, and all the other players are just standing around a corner waiting for the uber to die down. Unless you're really close to capturing a point, it won't matter much. You have to get kills to make a real advance. And even if everything works out, kritz is still more effective at clearing a room.

The problem is that the heavy's main job is literally 'not dying'. Ubers make him better at it, but he still has the same basic utility. Whereas an uber on a pyro transforms him from a support unit to a wall of death. Demos and soldiers turn from killing machines to unstoppable killing machines, and you can't escape from them as easily.

It does do a lot of damage up close, but the only times when enemies get that close are when they run into you or you ambush them, uber doesn't really help the former, and for the latter, either you don't need an uber (weak enemies) or another class would be better (heavies and/or sentries).

Uber heavy is good for stopping/slowing/delaying your retreat, but if you need an uber to have a heavy survive in close range combat, then something's wrong. Sure, a spy, heavy, or pyro can destroy a heavy in close range combat, but only as an ambush, which means you're ubering to save your life, not as part of a strategy, and you'd get identical results if you ubered an engy.

Also, regen is necessary on medic because flare gun burns.

Aiming and timing. If you play soldier/demo enough, you get a sense of their rhythm, when they can shoot and how long it takes them to reload. Otherwise, just keep practising.

See, if you're getting hit with a flare gun, you should have a few needles into the pyro anyway. And really, with +1 regen per second you're only looking at 40 points of damage, plus 30 from the hit, leaving you with 80 health assuming you don't get extinguished, which let's face it is really easy. Flare guns aren't a major threat unless the pyro gets his critshot in, and no regen will help with that, that hurts.

A medic with 20 HP isn't going anywhere for a while regardless. You can usually find a healthkit/dispenser in the time it takes to regen, or even run back to your spawn.

I use the original, occasionally black box. Tried the DH a few times, couldn't get used to the increased rocket speed, threw off my aim.

no, it's 3 health per second, faster if not taking damage

but I agree, it's not very useful.

which is why the blutsager is the better weapon

40 syringes per clip at 3 health per hit

even if you have shitty aim it's more health at a faster rate

I use Machina, if you find yourself no-scoping regularly something's gone wrong.

Huntsman isn't bad.

Otherwise what Glork said.

WTF IS A HEATMAKER I'VE BEEN AWAY TOO LONG
I'll explain it to you. You have to get someone else to understand it for you.

Machina's only upside is if you let yourself fully charge a large majority of the time you take a shot. And if you're doing that, pure probably doing it wrong.

no, that's the sleeper

machina gives +15% damage in exchange for tracer bullets (which give away your position but any halfway decent player should spot you by the time you're shooting anyway) and forced scope (which you should be doing all the time anyway)

don't mean to rude but

sounds like you really shouldn't ever play sniper seriously

, numb nuts.

If you can aim well enough to snap to heads consistently, Machina is worse.

I am sooooo out of practice

I need help mastering the low height far distance rocket jump

Guys help me how do you do this

(Also, I have come to the decision that soldier is too hard to play on pubs if you don't swap out shotgun for gunboats. Because you rarely have medics pocketing you. )

I just face backwards and don't aim the rocket at such a low angle

nah, nobody really gives a damn about hats anymore

fans were only obsessed with them when they were a rare item you could only get after lots of drops

then the meme broke out, Valve got on board, and hats became more common
