The single most important disadvantage with Venice is that Venice is trash tier late game. Being on one city means you have considerable fewer population than other civs. You get less science per turn, less production per turn, less great people generation per turn than civs with more cities. It's a simple number game.
This isn't even considering that fact that multiplayer games almost always end in a domination victory, assuming you're playing against at least semi-competent players. All you have to do to screw over a sim city Venice is to just plunder his long distance trade routes. Trade routes are Venice's lifeline. Take that away from Venice and Venice becomes pretty much irrelevant.
imo, Venice's advantages are that that you can focus on population growth all the time (since you won't be building settlers); you can get national wonders up before other players (national college); you can get happiness from city states very easily meaning your first golden age will come sooner than normal.
This means Venice is a strong EARLY game civ, and as such you have to do something with that advantage and hope you can snowball from there. Otherwise you'll end up being irrelevant. Your goal as Venice is to destroy at least one civ with an early timing push (comp bow + swords + cavs).
Venice's early game advantage means you get more free turns to focus on military. You can usually afford to have built/prebuilt a sizable army, have a militaristic city state ally, built TerraCotta by the time other players have just finished planting their expansions.
