So I'm an hour or so into Secret of Mana. I forgot how much I dig this game. The very first time I played this game was on the original cart, so subsequent playthroughs on emulators have been decidedly clunkier. This is the first time I've used a usb controller and it makes all the difference. The physical process of playing this game is fun now. Woo!

Spoiler: the enemies are too cute sometimes

I'll probably mention this again, but I love the menu system. It's intuitive and takes the game in a different direction than the usual Excel Spreadsheets: the Game. I always hated that about RPGs. It's by no means perfect, but I love it.

My biggest quibble before had been the combat system, but somehow the intervening years (and the controller) have made it a lot easier and more fun for me. Can't emphasize this enough, the game is fun to play.

Spoiler: I am a mature adult

I'll talk more about this later, but I love the way this game looks. The art is cartoony, but there are so many varied landscapes and unique enemies that it really comes alive and has a unique atmosphere.

I played a bit. I really like it. The plot is amusing, I like a game that doesn't take itself too seriously. The dash is awkward, but the rest of the controls are great. Music is surprisingly good. Cannon travel is hilarious.
