It looks like just an updated port of 8 to me..? Mostly because they're just racing on Yoshi's Island (which was on 8) and it looks basically identical, same UI and everything.

Rest is hype, of course, although I'm mildly worried by the painfully huge performance hit that Zelda clearly takes when it switches into being a handheld.

having a system where you hold 2 items at once would be a pretty massive change to include in what is just a port; it's probable that it's based on
Mario Kart 8
, especially because it just makes sense for Nintendo to reuse anything from the Wii U that they can, but I think it's probable that it'll be a new numbered entry.

the apparent decrease in performance in
Breath of the Wild
is weird to me, because Nintendo really doesn't have any incentive to deliberately make their game look like it's running slow, and that would be an obvious thing to fix in post production of the video. the handful of times I've watched the footage, it's looked more like the slow downs are tied to hitting enemies in combat, and I seen to recall that being an aesthetic choice present in the Wii U version of the game. I'd have to rewatch multiple videos to confirm that, though, and I'm lazy, so I haven't done that.

But it has an identical UI (same track name and font, same shape and style item holder things, same placing and style of the lap and coin cointer and place, and most importantly to me an identical VS Race logo - in fact the only different UI element is the colour of the Map, which is blue in 8), an identical track, and from what I can see (although the screen is too small to fully tell) the karts seem to be the same and the character models that aren't new are the same too (at the start line, you can see Rosalina on the standard ATV with monster tires and Roy on the Pipe Frame, and then while racing you can see Mario on the B-Dasher and King Boo is on the Circuit Special - all of these are in Mario Kart 8).

It looks way too similar to be a sequel. Updated re-release with significant changes is my bet.

As for Zelda - look at 0:44, where the monster is standing up - significant lag and no hits going on. I'd love it to be something else, but right now it's looking like the handheld on its own has significantly weaker power than the console as a whole.

No backwards compatibility with physical media for Wii U or 3DS.

That's a bit disappointing.

To be honest, I'm kind of thankful - I feel that if they continued being backwards compatible, they'd have to include certain features just for the sake of including them to allow backwards compatibility - dual screen, motion controls, etc.

(Don't get me wrong from my various comments by the way - I am super hyped for this whole thing as it looks super great, and it's nice to see that Nintendo is continuing to produce games consoles that have the aim of being games consoles rather than just inferior PCs like Xbox/Playstation tend to be)

I believe the small detachable controllers do have built in motion controls. No dual screen makes 3ds comparability hard though, and no dvd drive makes wiiU hard.
Taking a break from the site.

I'm more worried about the crossover from amd to nvidia in regards to backwards compatibility, to be quite honest.

I can plug GBA games and DS games into my 3DS without problems. Why can't I do the same with this?
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

You can plug GBA games into your 3DS? That's impressive.

Also, this console doesn't have dual-screen play - that is, there are two screens, but you don't use them both simultaneously anymore.

this video goes through the different options for playing DS games on the Wii U, and demonstrates different ways that the Switch could handle DS/3DS/Wii U games

I'm hopeful that the Switch has some software backwards compatibility; I'd love it if I could just directly import my Wii U digital library to it, similar to how it's possible to transfer the digital contents of a Wii to a Wii U. obviously, the hardware won't be backwards compatible (though I'm definitely hopeful that some of the controllers are usable with it--I've got a couple Wii U Pro Controllers and several Wii Classic Controllers, and I'd love if those were still relevant), but it's still possible that Nintendo supports the software. they've not said anything about Virtual Console, but ideally those would all be pretty easy to transfer.

also, in case anyone hasn't heard, Nintendo is doing a live presentation on January 12.

right, and a bunch of the methods that the Wii U uses to display DS games aren't dual-screen.

also it just occurred to me that it's not necessarily a given that you can only use one screen at a time. they've only shown off functionality involving one screen at a time, but there's a bunch of possible other features that haven't yet been demonstrated yet. and even if it isn't, I don't think they'll ever fully rule it out. for instance, long ago, Nintendo suggested that it might at some point be possible to use two GamePads at once with a single Wii U; that functionality never came about, but it wasn't something Nintendo ever explicitly said wasn't happening.

I think Nintendo confirmed officially that only one screen is used at a time.

I agree witb Dav on backwards compalibility. I like the 'one at a time' thing too. This means splatoon does not need gamepad anymore. Yay.

Leak, this was just put on EB Games' Australian site, taken down shortly
Image
Australian dollars here and the console price is a placeholder, but this confirms that the Mario Kart we saw was a MK8 to Switch updated port, and potentially that the pro controller is being released after the Switch console.

Woo Breath of the Wild is launch
Also, what is NM doing? Worst play I’ve ever seen.
I can't remember the last N_M post that wasn't bland, unimaginative and lame. Some shitposters are at least somewhat funny. You are the epitomy of the type of poster that nobody would miss if you were to suddenly disappear. You never add anything of value.
I'm guessing you haven't read the game and probably never will? Why even sign up to play?
