Rules

You are assumed to know the rules of the game of Chess. If you need clarification on any point, the complete rules are available from FIDE.

This tournament follows a single round-robin format: each player will play one game against each other player. The full schedule of games will be published once signups close. In general, players will get the white and black pieces as near to equally often as possible.
  1. Queueing
    1. At any given time players should be playing or enqueued for at least three games. Players are free to play more if they wish.
    2. When you are ready to begin a new game, you should post "Queueing" in this thread. You may post "Queueing x2" if you are ready to start two games, and likewise for more.
    3. The tournament director is responsible for starting all games and PMing the players when a game starts.
    4. If a player has fewer than three games in progress and still has pending games, they will be automatically enqueued for up to three games,
      unless
      1. they explicitly re-queue before the tournament director can enqueue them;
        or

      2. they lost/drew their last game by time forfeit or abandonment; in which case they must explicitly queue within 72 hours or forfeit all their pending games as well. (Games forfeited by both players in this manner will be scored as abandoned.)
  2. Time controls
    1. Each player has
      48 hours
to make each move in the game.
    2. If a player exceeds their allotted time to move, their opponent may claim a timeout and end the game. They must do so
      before
      making another move.
    3. If the tournament director notices a player has exceeded their allotted time and still has not made a move, they will claim a timeout on the other player's behalf.
    4. On a correct timeout claim, the game will end in a win for the claimant,
      unless
there is no possible continuation of the game in which the claimant could checkmate their opponent; in that case the game will end in a draw.
  3. Scoring and reporting results
    1. Once a game concludes, one player should post in this thread reporting the result (White wins, Black wins, or draw).
    2. Decisive games will be scored as 1 point for the winner and 0 points for the loser.
    3. Draws will be scored as ½ point for each player.
  4. Outside assistance
    1. Players
      may not
seek assistance in their game from other humans or from computer programs.
    2. Players
      may
use a "dumb" analysis board to play out variations privately.
    3. Players
      may
make use of pre-published material on opening theory and strategy.
    4. Do not
post in the thread of any ongoing game in which you are not a player!
Interfering with a game in progress is grounds for disqualification.
  5. Dispute resolution
    1. If players have a dispute about rules, scoring, or conduct, they may ask the tournament director to resolve that dispute for them.
    2. The tournament director may proactively step in in certain circumstances but will avoid doing so unless deemed necessary.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we're off! Everyone has 3 simultaneous games to start, except for bugspray (who has 2, due to the way the round robin works and me not being able to figure out a way to give them 3 without giving someone else 4).

Good luck to all players and have fun!

Please let me know if you notice any issues in the setup, but it should be that everyone has white and black equally overall (even if you might be more on one side to start with). Additionally, please let me know if you would like to queue for additional games. These will start as other players become available.

I will be monitoring games as best I can, but would appreciate a heads up via PM if you finish your game with the result.

Clarification, just in case: you may not change a move once it has been posted even if your opponent hasn’t yet seen it or made their own move. Moves are final once posted in thread

Also editing stuff on my phone is awful, so I’ll be updating the table with scores once I’m back in Madrid

While I am not in charge here, I would guess that if the typo is a legal move it has to stand, and if not then it doesn't count at all (meaning you haven't made a move yet)
correct -- please make sure you check your final moves before posting! treating a typo as kind of like a touch move rule thing

I'm going to check in with Datisi and bugspray before I start any new games for them to check that they both intend to continue playing, given that they both lost all their games so far on timeouts. If either is dropping out, their remaining games will be cancelled and no points awarded for those matchups.

Sorry to hear that, but how you're doing should take priority.

***

Datisi's remaining games have been cancelled.

As Mist7676 also timed out of their last game, I'm awaiting confirmation that they intend to continue before starting their game with Gypyx.

In post 34, Umlaut wrote:I'd suggest either awarding the point to whoever is on the other side of those matchups (provided they don't also drop out)
does anyone have any objections to this? I'll make the final call, but it seems reasonable to me. I couldn't remember how it was done last year, but (correct me if I'm wrong umlaut) I think it was this instead of what I proposed.

48hrs to raise issues or this is what we're rolling with

Thanks Mist! Just wanted to make sure due to datisi and bugspray being unable to continue

Yes, this is fine, but please don't feel obliged to. Last year a lot of people were, uh, very generous and it led to things dragging out a lot. If you're enjoying the match and you want to play it out that's okay.

Thanks for the feedback on the points giving too.

Okay, I've awarded points for everyone who had a game cancelled, wrapped up the games that were completed, and I'll start the final match ups in a second.

I've decided to change one of the rules, slightly. Instead of there being no takebacks at all, I'm going to say that it's permissible in cases where a player requests a takeback on their opponent's behalf, when it's reasonably obvious that it was a typo. I think this goes without saying, but please don't try to put any pressure on your opponent to do this. The ultimate responsibility for a making sure the move is the one you want is always on you.

Sorry y'all for the delay on this -- life got particularly busy and it kept slipping my mind until today. Umlaut has already done a lovely job of summing up, which would make my doing the same somewhat redundant. Congratulations to S_S for winning, to Umlaut for a close second place, and to those in the three-way tie for third place, Gypyx, Mist7676, and VashtaNeurotic.

Thank you everybody for playing and I hope you all enjoyed!
