Ruleset

(shamelessly taken from Hectic by way of Prism, with my own modifications)

1. Fundamentals
  • All site-wide rules apply. Read and respect them.
  • This is a game. Have fun, and keep the game fun for other people. This might be the most important rule.
  • There is no personal communication regarding this game outside of this gamethread & associated PTs.
  • Do not quote any private communication (either real or fabricated) with the moderator, backup moderator, or fellow players. Do not reference timestamps of private communication.
  • Do not engage in the use of trust tells.
  • Heated discussion and debate is allowed, but personal attacks are not. I reserve the right to protect my players, and all other community members. Please PM myself and the backup moderator if you feel something needs our immediate intervention.
  • If you make a post indicating that the game is having a negative impact on your out of game relationships or well being, you will be warned or forcibly replaced, depending on severity. If you believe the game is having a negative impact on your life, send me a PM rather than posting about it in the game thread.
  • Play to your Win Condition.

2. Phases & Activity

  • Please post at least once every 48 hours. If you fail to do so, you will be prodded. If you fail to respond to said prod within 24 hours, you will be replaced.
  • Contentless "prodges" do not count for the purpose of resetting the prod timer.
  • At the time you would receive a third prod, or fail to respond to a prod by posting in thread within 24 hours (or by PM if at Night), you will be force replaced.
  • All Day phases will have a 7 day deadline. Night phases will last for 2 days. If necessary, extensions will be granted for the purpose of securing replacements.
  • If there is no majority at the deadline, there will be no elimination.
  • Votes must not be spoilered and should be in the format of VOTE: Player or
    Vote: Player
    , or they will not be counted. Abbreviating someone's name is acceptable, so long as I can discern who you were voting for without trouble. If I think it should count as a vote, it will.
  • Unvoting is not required, but is much appreciated.
  • The following is a list of outlawed shenanigans:
    • Using invisible text, codes, cryptography, etc.
    • Editing your posts (if you have the power to do so)
    • Quoting any PTs you may have access to
    • Referencing the flavor text (in
      Italics
      ) from your role PM. You are free to claim your role name.
  • If any of these offenses are committed, I have the right to force-replace you from the game, or, with listmod permission, modkill you.

3. Miscellaneous

  • Do not impersonate the moderator.
  • Feel free to address me in-thread, but if there is a large egregious mistake please PM myself or Prism. Small matters like errors in the votecount can be posted in-thread.
  • I have the final say on any issue. If you disagree with any action or inaction taken by me, feel free to PM myself or the relevant listmod, .
  • While I have tried to be thorough, I reserve the right to take corrective action with or without warning for any issue I feel was omitted in this ruleset.

Setup


This game uses a
closed
setup. The following information about the game is publicly known.

The Thing
Setup
  • 10 Humans

  • 3 Things
Mechanics
  • The
    Things
    have daytalk.
  • The roles of players
    will not
    be revealed on death.
  • Players who are eliminated during the day
    will
    have their alignment revealed. Players who die during the night
    will not
    .
  • Assimilation:
    During the night phase, the
    Things
    can choose to have one of their members "Assimilate" the nightkill. If that
    Thing
    successfully carries out the nightkill on its intended target, it will "assimilate" the alternate account of the killed player and gain control of it. The
    Thing
    will lose control of its original account, and it will flip as having died during the night phase instead.
  • There is no limit to the number of times a
    Thing
    can jump to a new account.
  • Assimilation is optional for
    Things
    . They do not have to jump to a new account if they do not wish to do so.
  • There exists at least one Vanilla Townie in this game. Non-vanilla roles may also exist.
  • Things do not have powers beyond the factional kill and assimilation.
  • Night actions will be resolved on their
    original target
    . Assimilation takes place
    last
    in the order of Night Action Resolution.

SPECIAL RULES FOR ANONYMOUS GAMES

Anon Game Rules
  • You are only allowed to post in this game thread on your moderator provided alternate account.
  • You are not allowed to post in threads that are not related to this game with your alternate account.
  • Slipping up on either of these will result in immediate force replacement.
  • You are allowed to change your alternate account's timezone. You are allowed to change your account's theme. I have helpfully set the themes of the alternate accounts to the lovely Sepia, but you should use a theme that is different from the one you use on your main account, to minimize the chances of alt slipping.
  • You are allowed to list your preferred pronouns on your alternate account. Do not abuse this. Do not publicly speculate on the main accounts of other users based on their pronouns.
  • You are not allowed to change
    any other
    setting for your alternate account, including avatar, signature, location, or quote. Do not try to change the account's password.
  • Do not tell others your main account. Do not even hint at the identity of your main account.

@Mod how does this even work.

hypothetically if a vigilante targeted a thing who was assimilating another player and there are no other night actions, what happens?
Kills resolve before assimilation, so both the Thing and their nightkill target would flip as having died.

If you wish, submit a list of list of guesses for the main account behind each alternate. You do not have to submit a guess for each alt, but there is no penalty for doing so. Correctly matching a player to their alias is worth 2 points. Guessing a player who is in the game but not the alt they are using is worth 1 point. The player with the most points gets a prize awarded postgame.

it's way late for me so i don't have time for full thoughts but basically: assimilation mechanic never came into play because town stomped from very early on, unfortunate but sometimes thats the way it goes. there are obvious obstacles to the mechanic of scum jumping to a new account that make it tricky/intimidating to use, some of these can be compensated for but if i ran a game like this again i'd have to clarify things/add mechanics to make assimilation more favorable. for an initial run of the setup i wanted to make it reasonably simple, though. had idea for some complex item based mechanics but cut them down to make something more familiar to most players. maybe more tomorrow.

from good play, but I def think it was townsided at least somewhat.
i do think revealing the things had no power roles was a mistake, i somewhat absent-mindedly gave that info out in the setup posts without thinking about the implications. that being said, the only confirmable power roles in the setup were the friendly neighbor, which cleared itself regardless, and the vig, which is basically always town in MS site meta. i suppose the motion detector could confirm itself too but that's a somewhat unlikely scenario.

it is hard to assess balance when town stomps, i think the power obviously had a cumulative strength since town rolled, the intention was building in some redundancy to counteract the no reveals + assimilation mechanics. I think, for instance, the 1-shot cop is much less powerful when getting a clear because town can't be assured the cop or his clear are legitimate, and even if they are, if they haven't been jumped on later days. motion detector in most instances is unlikely to get anything useful at all. i think probably the vig was underestimated in review where it was seen as being mostly antitown, which was probably not correct.

but yeah basically was counting on the prs being less useful than they actually were

yeah this was obviously an issue, i basically had to throw stuff together at the last minute so I just pulled the pictures of the characters off the wiki, i didn't have a problem with them but obviously it was for other people, if i were to do another iteration of this i probably try to make the avatars more visually distinct? of course it's hard because a lot of the movie takes place indoors at night, it's not a brightly lit movie most of the time

was suggested the things needed more incentive to assimilate given the difficulties in doing so in a forum setting (in addition to all the stuff about posting styles and timezones, there's the simple factor that in a forum game it's usually easy to tell what nightkills "should" happen and it usually will be obvious if someone jumps - but if a scum is generally being townread it's rarely in their interest to jump to a new account)

i definitely did not consider the possibility both sides could be ambiguous about the FN message effectively making them unable to be jumped while the other was alive

i was worried about scumsiding the setup too much with a mechanic like this but if if i ran a V2 of the setup i would probably have something like that to make the things stronger. that wouldn't be for some time though obv

this setup could def be run again - I remember this also happened first time Divide and Conquer got ran it ended day 1
well i mean i can't re-run a closed setup but i'd throw in some tweaks
